PolyU Students Deepen Understanding of National Defence Through PLA Barracks Visits

In April 2026, around 80 PolyU students participated in two visits to People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Hong Kong Garrison barracks. Through close interaction with the Hong Kong Garrison and diversified military experience activities, the visits provided students with valuable first-hand exposure to national defence and military life.   On 11 April 2026, students visited the Shek Kong Barracks, beginning with a solemn national flag-raising ceremony. The programme included demonstrations of combat techniques and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operations, as well as a national security education video. Students also explored displays of weapons and military equipment, toured soldiers’ dormitories, and participated in hands-on activities such as simulated shooting and VR flight simulations.   Another group visited the Ngong Shuen Chau Barracks on 18 April 2026. Activities included a flag-raising ceremony, visits to PLA Hong Kong Garrison Exhibition Center and naval vessels, and interactive training sessions. Students engaged in practical exercises such as rope-tying, donning naval firefighting suits, semaphore communication, and navigation instrument operations.   Through these immersive visits, students gained a more comprehensive understanding of the nation’s history and the development of the people’s armed forces. They learned about the PLA’s advanced military equipment and modern defence capabilities, while gaining deeper appreciation of the discipline, professionalism, and commitment required to safeguard national security. Importantly, students recognised the PLA’s role in maintaining Hong Kong’s long-term prosperity and stability, thereby strengthening their national identity, defence awareness, and sense of civic responsibility.

The night was made even more memorable by the classical music performance by the PolyU Orchestra, and a high-energy dance performance by six members of the School of Hip Hop of Youth Outreach—invited by Prof. Leung, Honorary Consultant of Youth Outreach.   Together, we came together as a global community — bringing together around 210 students from various departments in PolyU, representing over 29 countries and regions for an unforgettable night of dialogue, inspiration, and connection.
