CHOY Long Yin (President)
BBA (Hons) Management, Year 4
My PolyU journey began with a simple belief: leadership is not about authority, but about service. As a Student Ambassador and an MC for university events, including the President's Welcome for over 900 participants, I learned that true influence comes from earning trust, showing respect, and lifting others. Whether volunteering at the Global AI Forum, bringing warmth to the elderly during Chinese New Year, or representing PolyU at Cambridge's Girton College, I have always sought to lead with empathy and purpose.
These experiences shaped me. They taught me that leadership is not a solo act; it is a shared journey of collaboration, cultural exchange, and quiet courage. Awards like the HKSAR Government Scholarship and the Presidential Student Leadership Award are meaningful, but what I treasure most is seeing a freshman find confidence, or a team rally behind a shared goal.
Looking ahead, I aspire to build something that outlasts me, to become an entrepreneur who creates products that solve real global problems. Not small fixes. Not local patches. But scalable, meaningful solutions in areas like education access, mental wellbeing, or sustainable technology. I want to take what I have learned about leadership, empathy, and execution, and channel it into ventures that touch lives across continents. One good idea, executed with rigour and heart, can ripple across the world. That is the change I am determined to make.
To my fellow students: do not wait for a title. Start where you are. Serve with sincerity, lead with respect, and trust that your first small step, a hand raised, a question asked, a community served, will set something greater in motion. Hone your skills with conviction. The rest will follow.
BHALLA Joshua Rishabh Malik
BA (Hons) Fashion (Fashion Design), Year 3
Hello everyone! I am Joshua, a current Year 3 student majoring in Fashion Design, and as you can see, my university life has been quite fulfilling, diverse, and rewarding over my three years studying here at PolyU!
I was awarded the Hong Kong Jockey Club Striding On Scholarship and the Presidential Student Leadership Award. Through these, I joined the Oxford Character Project, a summer leadership programme where I learned about character-driven leadership through storytelling, improvisation, and public speaking. I also went on a London study tour to UAL and attended AIESEC conferences in Nepal and Indonesia, gaining insights into cross-cultural exchange.
As founding President of the School of Fashion & Textiles Student Association, I started workshops to promote student engagement. As VP of Global Volunteer for AIESEC-LC-PolyU, I led 50+ students to volunteer globally, earning Best Leader and fostering cross-cultural understanding. I learned that leadership is never about me but about serving students and connecting them.
My bucket list: academic excellence, showcasing designs at the PolyU Fashion Show, a summer semester in New York, an internship in design/data/strategy, returning to performing arts, and concluding my AIESEC presidency.
For freshmen: don’t just chase GPA. Use university to rediscover yourself through new opportunities. Diverse experiences matter more than grades. Never say no to new experiences, and write your own unique university story!
CHAN Chun Hung
BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering, Year 4
My journey at PolyU as a civil engineering student has been both rigorous and rewarding. A standout experience was leading a team of six in the ICE HKA G&S Model Building Competition 2025, where we designed a scale model featuring a breakwater and waterwall concrete structure. This challenged me to assess soil-water interaction, slope stability, and seepage—directly applying classroom theories to a complex, hands-on project. Another unforgettable opportunity was my industry visit to Dubai with Ducon Industries, a company known for advancing sustainable construction through recycled aggregates and low-impact methods. There, I witnessed how innovative material recovery can reshape urban development—a perspective that deeply influenced my thinking.
Looking ahead, I aspire to become a civil engineer dedicated to sustainable and resilient infrastructure in Hong Kong. Long-term, I hope to establish my own firm focused on selective demolition, material recovery, and eco-friendly design—integrating solar panels, rainwater harvesting, and recycled materials into high-density housing. My goal is to create safe, dignified living spaces for vulnerable communities while fostering a culture of sustainability.
To my fellow students: embrace every hands-on challenge and cross-cultural exposure. The technical skills matter, but the vision you build alongside them is what truly shapes our future. Stay curious, stay collaborative, and never underestimate the impact of designing with both people and the planet in mind.
CHENG Yaxuan
BA (Hons) English & Applied Linguistics, Year 4
My time at PolyU has been filled with surprises and genuine growth. Serving as Internal Vice President of the Zonta PolyU Golden Z Club honed my organisational and leadership skills. I was also honoured to be selected for SAO's 2025 Student Leaders Dialogue Programme, where I visited outstanding enterprises in the Greater Bay Area and engaged in valuable exchanges with student representatives from two renowned universities in Singapore. Then, in December 2024, I joined the PolyU HeartFire Educational Service Organisation on a teaching trip to Hainan, where I had the opportunity to pass on my knowledge and skills to local students. Seeing them gradually develop a genuine interest in traditional culture and become more willing to work hard and improve themselves was truly unforgettable. Currently, through GEO's 2025/26 exchange programme, I am studying at the University of Southern Denmark, building friendships with local students, promoting Hong Kong and Mainland Chinese culture, and exploring Danish traditions. These are just a few chapters of my PolyU story, yet each has shaped me in its own unique way.
In my final year, I plan to apply for a United Nations volunteer programme, as I believe that grassroots service is essential to understanding global challenges and making meaningful contributions. This will also help prepare me for future work in cross-cultural settings, advocating for inclusivity and youth empowerment. I also intend to pursue a master's degree after graduation to further develop myself.
I used to hesitate too. But looking back, every small "yes" to something unfamiliar – an activity, a trip, a conversation - has slowly built a version of myself that I truly like. Growth happens when you embrace discomfort. So believe in yourself. You don't have to be great to start, but you have to take the first step to become great.
CHEUNG Chung Mau Andrew
BSc (Hons) Biomedical Engineering, Year 4
My PolyU journey has been shaped by service, leadership, international learning, and a growing passion for healthcare technology. At PolyU, I have served as a Student Health Ambassador, Positive Psychology Ambassador, Mental Health First Aider, i-Peer Helper, and a member of a student-led video production team promoting PolyU’s mental wellness support services. These roles have allowed me to support student well-being, promote inclusion, and contribute to a caring campus culture.
Beyond campus, I have taken part in overseas learning opportunities in Singapore, Korea, and Canada, including biomedical engineering exchange, entrepreneurship, industry exposure, and a cancer research internship focusing on SERS-based detection. One especially meaningful experience was volunteering as a research assistant in a PolyU Biomedical Engineering project on balance and walking rehabilitation for stroke survivors. I assisted with patient assessments, questionnaires, gait trials, and motion analysis data collection. Interacting directly with patients was truly amazing, because it showed me how engineering knowledge can connect with real human needs and support recovery.
Looking ahead, I aspire to develop biomedical engineering solutions that improve rehabilitation, diagnosis, patient monitoring, and access to healthcare. I hope to combine engineering, clinical understanding, and compassionate service to create practical technologies that benefit patients and underserved communities.
My advice to fellow students is to take more opportunities, even when they feel challenging. Do not be afraid to fail: failure reveals what we need to improve. As long as we keep learning and trying again, we have never truly failed.
CHEUNG Pak Yin Hugo
BSc (Hons) Surveying, Year 4
My journey here is defined by the belief that learning extends beyond the classroom to make a social impact.
This belief has taken me across the globe. One of my defining experiences was leading a team in Germany to restore a thousand-year-old castle. This real-world challenge allowed me to apply surveying principles in a raw, historical context, discovering my leadership potential. Similarly, studying ESG investment at the University of Cambridge and participating in a building workshop in Seoul shifted my perspective. I moved from a purely technical focus to a macro-level mindset that balances commercial feasibility with long-term social value.
In addition, I have channelled this growth into leadership roles. I served as a Class Representative for my department and Public Relations Officer for the Chinese YMCA. These experiences, alongside mentoring teenagers in the UK during an exchange period, taught me that technical skill is only half the battle. Empathy and communication are what truly drive a project forward.
Looking ahead, I aspire to become a professional building surveyor dedicated to revitalising Hong Kong’s ageing urban landscape. I am particularly passionate about tackling the safety and sustainability challenges of our city's many old buildings.
To my fellow students, I encourage you to embrace every opportunity to "do more". Challenges are not signs of unsuitability but invitations to grow. While academic excellence is a vital first step, it is your resilience and heart for service that will truly define your journey.
JIA Shuxiu
BSc (Hons) Computer Science, Year 3
My journey at PolyU has been shaped by both community service and academic inquiry. I have dedicated time to teaching students in Guizhou through the HeartFire club; this experience enriched my perspective on education and public responsibility. For two consecutive terms, I served as an I Peer in the SAO Envoy Programme to welcome non-local students to our campus. I also volunteered as a student helper at local competitions and activities hosted by PolyU.
In my courses, I met responsible and professional teachers who led us through great classes; working with diverse students also taught me a lot about teamwork. In my studies, the URIS program provided my first practical experience in research. This foundation led directly to my current research internship at the University of Waterloo through the Mitacs program, which is in collaboration with PolyU, allowing me to explore my academic path more deeply and acquire new technical skills.
Looking ahead, my plan is to continue advancing in the field of research. My aspiration is to master frontier knowledge and apply it to projects that hold tangible value for society; I believe academic work must remain closely connected to real-world needs to be truly meaningful.
To my fellow students, I would say this. Time is precious; let none go to waste. Find work you can commit to, meet it with steady effort, and let the outcomes come in their own time.
LAM Yan Kei
BBA (Hons) Accounting & Finance, Year 4
PolyU supported my growth in all aspects. I was fortunate to have several exchange experiences. In the summer of year 1, I joined a summer school organised by Girton College, University of Cambridge. Following that, I participated in a cross-university program between Zhejiang University and PolyU for a short-term course. In the second semester of year 3, I also undertook an exchange at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU). All these experiences sharpened both my academic and personal growth in different ways.
During these exchanges, I was able to take courses that were not available at PolyU. I really treasure such experiences. Through interactions with people from diverse backgrounds, I developed ideas that integrated different cultures. Such interactions and cross-cultural friendships broadened my horizons and provided me with a better picture of the world. I believe this development in global communication will be invaluable for my future career.
In the future, I wish to live out PolyU’s motto and apply everything I have learned, bringing these insights back to the university to help my fellow students by sharing my experiences. Furthermore, I am eager to continue sharpening both my soft and hard skills so as to better contribute to the community.
To my peers, I encourage you to step out of your comfort zones and explore the world and your interests as much as possible during this crucial stage of your life. Especially in the era of rapid change, adaptability is one of the key elements of success.
LIU Shiyu
BSc (Hons) Data Science & Analytics, Year 3
Since starting my undergraduate journey at PolyU, I have been dedicated to integrating academic research and technological innovation into my university life.
I have served as a research assistant in Professor Wang Zuankai’s laboratory since September 2024. Working closely with Dr Peng Zehua, I conduct water droplet power generation research, including comparative experiment design, BAM@PDMS film fabrication and data analysis. I also assist in organising research outcomes and preparing presentation slides for funding applications and academic conferences.
Additionally, I participate in the URIS programme supervised by Professor Shen Guohao, developing hierarchical reinforcement learning algorithms for drones under sparse reward scenarios and building multi-agent simulation environments using Gym.
Beyond academia, I am the co-founder and CTO of Blue Guardian Tech Limited, a PolyU HKUST-incubated startup focusing on AI-powered drowning prevention solutions. Our wearable device can detect drowning risks within 7 seconds and aims to save over 10,000 lives annually after full launch in 2029. Leading this project, I have won numerous innovation awards and funding grants, including the Songhu Cup Outstanding Hong Kong Entrepreneur Award, HKUST Million Dollar Innovation Competition Champion, HKSTP Incubation Programme funding, PolyU Micro Fund awards, and the PolyU International Future Challenge second prize.
Looking ahead, I aspire to contribute to society and my country by developing practical technologies rooted in the Greater Bay Area.

SZE Tsoi Yiu
BSc (Hons) Radiography, Year 4
My PolyU journey has been deeply shaped by my passion for medical imaging, patient care, and healthcare innovation. Through clinical placements at hospitals such as Queen Mary Hospital, Prince of Wales Hospital, Kwong Wah Hospital, Gleneagles Hospital Hong Kong, and others, I have gained valuable exposure to real clinical environments and developed a stronger understanding of the professionalism, empathy, and precision required of a radiographer.
Beyond clinical learning, I have also engaged in research through the Undergraduate Research and Innovation Scheme, focusing on non-invasive liver function prediction for personalised liver cancer radiotherapy. This experience strengthened my interest in the role of radiomics, artificial intelligence, and advanced imaging technologies in improving treatment planning and patient outcomes. My academic and exchange experiences at Peking University and Linköping University in Sweden have further broadened my perspectives on healthcare development and global collaboration.
Looking ahead, I aspire to become a competent and compassionate radiographer who integrates clinical expertise, research insight, and humanistic care. I hope to contribute to the advancement of medical imaging and support patients throughout their healthcare journeys with professionalism and empathy.
To my fellow students, I would like to say: remain curious, courageous, and open to challenges. Every placement, project, and encounter is an opportunity to learn, serve, and grow into a better version of yourself.
WANG Qinyan
BSc (Hons) Physics with a Second Major in AIDA, Year 3
My PolyU journey has been a vibrant blend of academic breakthroughs, leadership practices and community outreach. Academically, I maintain a high GPA, earning the Presidential Student Leadership Award and Dean’s Honours List. I expanded my academic horizons through two prestigious summer programmes: an exchange at USTC in 2025 and a study programme at Pembroke College, which deepened my interdisciplinary thinking in physics and AI.
I seized diverse leadership opportunities: I captained my team to win third place in KPMG STEM Is HER Future Competition and took charge of promotional planning in PolyU’s Heart Fire volunteer committee. I also accumulated hands-on experience as a research student assistant, AI marketing intern and competition participant, while contributing to society through voluntary STEM tutoring in Turpan and elderly supply distribution in Hong Kong. My research work on intelligent safety monitoring even won the Best Student Paper Award at ISH-AIoT 2025.
Looking ahead, I aim to deepen my expertise in computational physics via ongoing URIS research, combining physics theories with AI technologies to solve real-world industrial and environmental challenges. To fellow students, I encourage you to step outside your comfort zone: balance rigorous academics with competitions, research and volunteer services. Every cross-disciplinary practice and leadership trial will shape your unique competitive edge, turning diverse experiences into lasting strengths for your future path.
WANG Yueyin
BSc (Hons) Logistics Engineering with Management, Year 3
At PolyU, I have learned that education becomes most meaningful when ideas are turned into actions. Studying Logistics Engineering and Management and Applied Mathematics has trained me to think analytically, but some of my most memorable growth has happened beyond the classroom.
One defining experience is building my entrepreneurial project, Logifera, an AI-powered platform supporting children with dyslexia through screening, assessment reports, and personalised intervention. Taking the project to innovation and entrepreneurship competitions taught me how to communicate a purpose, respond to feedback, improve a product, and grow with my teammates. Awards encouraged us, but the possibility of making support more accessible to children and families has been our strongest motivation.
I also served as a volunteer and youth panellist at the Asia-Pacific Forum on Green and Low-carbon Development. From preparation and event coordination to joining a roundtable dialogue, I learned that leadership is not only about speaking up, but also about listening and bringing people together around a shared responsibility. During my summer exchange at Nanyang Technological University in June 2026, meeting new friends and adapting to a different academic and cultural environment further broadened my perspective.
Looking ahead, I hope to develop socially meaningful ventures, deepen my understanding of business & technology, and contribute actively to the OSA. My encouragement to fellow students is simple: you rarely feel completely ready before a meaningful opportunity. Begin anyway, stay curious, take responsibility, and let each experience teach you what to do next.
WONG Chee Ying
BSc (Hons) Food Safety & Technology, Year 3
Looking back, my PolyU journey has been shaped by unforgettable experiences. One of my most memorable experiences was serving as the general event manager for the Malaysia Student Association last academic year. Together with my committee members, we planned different events. I learned how to lead a team, listen to different opinions, and turn an idea into a lively event.
Besides, I joined a service learning trip to Cambodia with my department. We taught local primary school children about food and nutrition through games and interactive activities. Sometimes, I volunteered at the dog shelter on weekends; taking care of animals is relaxing and heartwarming.
Currently, I am on exchange at Peking University, where I have enjoyed the vibrant campus culture, joined different activities beyond my major, and travelled to nearby cities on weekends. It has broadened my experiences to how much I can learn outside the classroom.
Looking ahead, while I will keep focusing on my studies, I also hope to join more diverse activities to broaden my horizons and step out of my comfort zone. Being part of the Outstanding Student Academy, I am excited to learn from peers and explore new opportunities. My advice is to study hard, but also play hard. Don’t be afraid to reach out for opportunities.
XIE Jingxuan
BEng (Hons) Building Sciences & Engineering, Year 3
My PolyU journey kicked off with a failure in pursuing my first passion — becoming an architect. Yet through intensive research projects and on-site collaborations, I came to recognise my own potential and developed a genuine curiosity about the engineering side of buildings. I am proud of my daring self who always goes all in. My passion met skill when I co-authored a book chapter on BIM technologies and AI/ML in architecture. Exploring my career interests, I took the lead in the Hotel ICON "CARE" project on indoor environmental quality, applying machine-learning forecasting to energy demand, and developed digital twins integrated with live IoT sensor data. Through these leadership experiences, I realised my ambition for entrepreneurship and gained business insights from an internship under a Project Director in industry. Recognition by ASHRAE headquarters with its Undergraduate General Scholarship inspired me to study at the Stanford Summer Session, where tremendous inspiration, a spirit of adventure, and a devoted academic atmosphere filled my life with awe and courage once again. I have been developing my own ideas and aim to bring the good ones into entrepreneurial practice. Further ahead, I aim to pursue a PhD in the USA, working on ML-driven building system control for data centres. With the unconditional support, ongoing inspiration, and genuine care of professors and seniors, I believe I can rise to every challenge. My words for fellow students: your path is uniquely your own, so please take the initiative to seek out opportunities.
Yan Yau Chun
BSc (Hons) Investment Science & Finance Analytics with a Second Major in AIDA, Year 3
My journey at PolyU has been a transformative experience, defined by a balance between academic rigour and a deep commitment to student life. One of my most cherished memories is serving in the Student Association of the Department of Applied Mathematics (AMASA). Organising orientation activities was a rewarding challenge that allowed me to welcome newcomers and foster a strong sense of community within our department.
Beyond the classroom, I am proud to serve as an officer cadet in the Hong Kong St. John Ambulance Brigade Youth Command. This role has been instrumental in my personal growth, providing me with the opportunity to lead first aid services at various events and mentor younger members through specialised training. These experiences have taught me the importance of discipline, empathy, and quick thinking in high-pressure situations.
Looking ahead, I aspire to bridge the gap between my analytical skills and my passion for public service. I plan to continue my leadership journey within the St. John Brigade while exploring ways to contribute to society through my professional career. This year, I am excited to continue my involvement with AMASA, where I aim to organise even more engaging and fun activities to enrich the university experience for my fellow classmates.

YANG Yang
BSc (Hons) Optometry, Year 5
It is my great honour to receive the Presidential Student Leadership Award and be a member of the Outstanding Student Academy. Throughout my university journey, I am glad to have received abundant opportunities which foster my growth both personally and professionally. I stepped out of my comfort zone into the unknown. One of the most unforgettable moments is the Positive Psychology Ambassador in the 2024/25 academic year. This is because I needed to cooperate with my groupmates and organise activities on campus to promote resilience among students. This will train my leadership, communication, creativity and empathy.
Professionally, I am delighted to participate in an outbound vision screening project in Yunnan, which was organised by my department. This service-learning experience is a hardship for me, but it reminds me that there is a population of underprivileged children that worth our attention and help. Beyond the local community, I wish to extend my profession, along with my leadership and care, to bring not only tangible support to needy people, but also love and connection around the world.
I wish all our schoolmates could embrace the courage to change. Whenever we need to initiate a campaign or a service, it may sound difficult in the beginning, and often we have a lot of worries. However, believe in your own choice and enjoy the process. I anticipate that what we can learn will be truly wonderful and rewarding.
