The ceremony was jointly conducted by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison and the PolyU Student Flag-Raising Team.   Dr Lam Tai-fai said, “This year marks the 29th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to the Motherland and the inaugural year of the National 15th Five-Year Plan. In alignment with these milestones, the HKSAR Government is formulating its first Five‑Year Plan to map out a strategic blueprint for Hong Kong’s future development. This year also marks the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, further underscoring the Nation’s thriving development. Today, China’s growing comprehensive national strength and rising international influence fully demonstrate the vibrancy and prosperity of the Nation in this new era.   In the face of these new opportunities, PolyU, as a key member of Hong Kong’s higher education sector and ranked 50th in the latest QS World University Rankings, is committed to keeping pace with the development of the Nation and Hong Kong. Upholding our educational mission, we strive to nurture in our students a strong sense of national pride, a global outlook and a deep commitment to social responsibilities. We encourage them to integrate their personal aspirations into the Nation’s undertakings, and to become virtuous and competent talents with an affection for the Nation and Hong Kong, who are ready to serve society and contribute to the country.”   He continued, “PolyU will fully leverage its strengths in education, research and knowledge transfer to support the Nation’s development into a powerhouse in technology, education and talent cultivation. The University will also make greater contributions towards Hong Kong’s integration into, and support for, the Nation’s overall development strategy, thereby enhancing the city’s international competitiveness and achieving high-quality development.”   PolyU has been organising the “PolyU Chinese Culture Festival” series of events since 2024 to promote Chinese culture, aiming to enhance the younger generation’s awareness and appreciation of Chinese culture and strengthen their sense of national identity. Following the flag-raising ceremony, PolyU screened the documentary “Confucius” at the Jockey Club Auditorium as one of the events under the PolyU Chinese Culture Festival. Confucianism, founded by Confucius, constitutes a vital part of traditional Chinese culture and has had a profound influence on the formation and development of the value system of the Chinese. The documentary, screening for the first-time in Hong Kong, uses vivid and expressive imagery to present this renowned Chinese thinker, politician, and educator. Both the flag-raising and documentary filming were attended by close to 400 distinguished guests and members of the PolyU community.

PolyU Students Deepen National Understanding through Beijing Exchange

From 31 May to 4 June 2026, members of the PolyU Student Flag-Raising Team joined over 100 representatives from 11 Hong Kong tertiary institutions in the Second Hong Kong University Flag-Raising Team Delegation Visit to Beijing, organised by the Hong Kong New Generation Cultural Association. The immersive programme provided rich learning opportunities centred on patriotism, national education, Chinese history, and cross-institutional exchange. Through first-hand participation in the national flag-raising ceremony at Tiananmen Square and a visit to the People’s Liberation Army Honour Guard, PolyU students developed a deeper appreciation of the dignity and symbolism of the national flag. Observing professional Chinese-style drill and engaging with the Honour Guard strengthened their discipline, precision, and respect for national identity. The study tour also broadened students’ historical perspectives. Visits to sites including the Juyongguan Great Wall, the Museum of the Communist Party of China, and the Museum of the War of Chinese People’s Resistance Against Japanese Aggression helped them better understand China’s historical journey and the resilience behind it. Meanwhile, exhibitions at the National Museum of China and the Military Museum of the Chinese People’s Revolution, together with observations of Beijing’s urban development and the Olympic Park, showcased the nation’s remarkable modern achievements. Engagements with Beihang University, including a flag-raising demonstration and peer exchange, fostered meaningful friendships and mutual learning. PolyU students further sharpened their flag-raising techniques while strengthening teamwork and leadership through sharing with mainland counterparts. Overall, the trip enriched students’ sense of national identity and responsibility, encouraging them to contribute actively to telling China’s story with authenticity and pride. Building on this momentum, a sharing session was held on 20 June 2026, where students vividly reflected on what they had learned and how the exchange shaped their understanding. With short videos and carefully prepared PowerPoint slides, they recalled moments such as standing solemnly during the flag-raising ceremony, watching the Honour Guard’s perfectly timed movements, and feeling the weight of history along the Great Wall. Their presentations also highlighted practical growth, including clearer techniques, stronger teamwork, and more confident leadership, reinforcing that patriotism can be practised through discipline, respect, and continuous learning.

PLA Barracks Visits_image_01

PolyU Students Deepen Understanding of National Defence Through PLA Barracks Visits

In April 2026, around 80 PolyU students participated in two visits to People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Hong Kong Garrison barracks. Through close interaction with the Hong Kong Garrison and diversified military experience activities, the visits provided students with valuable first-hand exposure to national defence and military life.   On 11 April 2026, students visited the Shek Kong Barracks, beginning with a solemn national flag-raising ceremony. The programme included demonstrations of combat techniques and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operations, as well as a national security education video. Students also explored displays of weapons and military equipment, toured soldiers’ dormitories, and participated in hands-on activities such as simulated shooting and VR flight simulations.   Another group visited the Ngong Shuen Chau Barracks on 18 April 2026. Activities included a flag-raising ceremony, visits to PLA Hong Kong Garrison Exhibition Center and naval vessels, and interactive training sessions. Students engaged in practical exercises such as rope-tying, donning naval firefighting suits, semaphore communication, and navigation instrument operations.   Through these immersive visits, students gained a more comprehensive understanding of the nation’s history and the development of the people’s armed forces. They learned about the PLA’s advanced military equipment and modern defence capabilities, while gaining deeper appreciation of the discipline, professionalism, and commitment required to safeguard national security. Importantly, students recognised the PLA’s role in maintaining Hong Kong’s long-term prosperity and stability, thereby strengthening their national identity, defence awareness, and sense of civic responsibility.

The PolyU High Table Dinner cum Dean of Students Talk Series 2025/26

The PolyU High Table Dinner cum Dean of Students Talk Series 2025/26 was held on April 13. Our evening began with a warm welcome address by Prof. Jin-Guang Teng, encouraging students to embrace lifelong learning and stay open-minded in a world that’s constantly evolving.   This year’s Dean of Students Talk Series featured Prof. Richard Leung Tim-chiu (PolyU University Fellowship, 2025), who delivered his inspiring talk, “Lifelong Learning and Mind, in a World of Uncertainty.” Based on his more-than-three-decade career in global finance, he shared how curiosity, resilience, and adaptability can guide us through life’s stages—and why maintaining an open, peaceful mind matters most when things feel uncertain.   Following his sharing, Prof. Leung engaged in an interactive dialogue with three outstanding students, exploring lifelong learning, career exploration, and personal growth. The night was made even more memorable by the classical music performance by the PolyU Orchestra, and a high-energy dance performance by six members of the School of Hip Hop of Youth Outreach—invited by Prof. Leung, Honorary Consultant of Youth Outreach.   Together, we came together as a global community — bringing together around 210 students from various departments in PolyU, representing over 29 countries and regions for an unforgettable night of dialogue, inspiration, and connection.
