LAU Cheuk Lam
Social Work (SW), Year 3
As a social work student, I am eager to investigate and address the mental health issues faced by youth in Hong Kong. Over the past year, I have participated in various courses and interacted with people suffering from mental illness, particularly youths and children.
My understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with mental illness deepened after participating in various mental health programmes. Additionally, I frequently participated in volunteer activities and served as the Youth Ambassador at Integrated Children and Youth Services Centres (ICYSC). These experiences allowed me to connect with youths and children, providing valuable insights into their struggles and knowing that many youths struggle with mental health issues they may not feel comfortable disclosing. I became aware of the stigma surrounding mental health and further motivated my commitment to advocacy for the mental health of youth in the community.

Social Work (SW), Year 4
My time at PolyU has given me an enriching university experience that has significantly contributed to my personal and professional development. Throughout my academic journey and social life, I have come to recognize my leadership potential and formed meaningful connections with my peers.
Leadership has presented its challenges, particularly during my tenure as a student representative and team leader. However, I have always had the support of friends and family who navigate these challenges with me, helping me to become a better self.
There have been many memorable experiences during my time at PolyU, including the establishment of my own social enterprise, participating in an exchange program to Germany, and attending international conferences. I aspire to become a helping professional in guiding others to recognize their strengths, just as PolyU has empowered me. I genuinely hope that each of you could enjoy your time here and cherish the moment at PolyU.

NG Wing Shan
Surveying (SUV), Year 3
I am a surveying student with a passion for using my skills to make a positive impact on people’s lives. Through my involvement in the Wong Tai Sin Youth Development Network and the District Youth Community Building Committee, I’ve been able to apply my knowledge of surveying to support community projects that enhance living spaces and foster stronger connections among residents. These experiences have taught me the importance of combining technical expertise with a genuine concern for people’s well-being.
Beyond my academic and community work, I’m also a dedicated sprinter on the athletics team, where I’ve learned the value of discipline, resilience, and teamwork. I’m someone who thrives on curiosity and new experiences—whether it’s traveling to explore different cultures, meeting people from diverse backgrounds, or listening to their inspiring stories. I believe that every connection and experience creates unexpected sparks, leading to growth and a better version of ourselves.
I’m thrilled to be part of The Academy and look forward to contributing my energy, ideas, and passion to this incredible community. Let’s make a difference together!

PAL Ileana
Mechanical Engineering (ME), Year3
University life at PolyU has been an enriching journey of personal growth, academic exploration, and community engagement. As an international student from a diverse background, I navigated the challenges of adapting to a new cultural and academic environment, which taught me the values of resilience and adaptability. My involvement in leadership roles, such as serving as the President of the International Students Association and as the Vice-President of the Google Developer’s Student Club, allowed me to foster inclusivity, lead impactful initiatives, and contribute meaningfully to the university community.
A particularly memorable experience was leading a multidisciplinary team at the HKAES Pitch Competition, where our project, EcoFlight, won a historic victory for PolyU. This reaffirmed my passion for innovation and collaboration.
TANG Killian
Nursing (SN), Year 5
My university journey has been a dynamic blend of academic challenges, personal growth, and enriching experiences. I have challenged myself by participating in various competitions and innovation projects, which pushed me to think critically and collaborate effectively. These experiences have not only allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world problems but also strengthened my adaptability in unfamiliar situations.
A highlight of my university life has been participating in exchange programmes, such as those at the University of Tokyo and the National University of Singapore, where I explored global healthcare systems in innovation and research. Taking on leadership roles and contributing to science projects has deepened my sense of responsibility toward improving patient outcomes.
Looking forward, I aspire to specialize in men’s health nursing while pursuing research in healthcare innovation. My ultimate goal is to advance healthcare practices through technology and care, ensuring that patients and their families receive holistic and impactful support.
TSANG Cheung Kit
English and Linguistics (ENGL), Year 4
University life at PolyU has been a whirlwind—challenging yet incredibly rewarding. Balancing coursework with internships and research was tough, especially when working at Teach for Hong Kong and The D.H. Chen Foundation, where I contributed to advocacy campaigns and content creation. It was overwhelming at times, but seeing firsthand how education can change lives made every late night worth it. One of the biggest challenges was figuring out how to juggle everything while staying true to my passion for social impact—but I’ve learned that purpose keeps you going, even when things get tough.
A highlight of my journey was my exchange at the University of Maryland, College Park. Living abroad for the first time, I had to adapt quickly—navigating a new education system, making international friends, and even traveling solo. It wasn’t always easy, but those experiences built my independence and gave me the confidence to embrace the unknown. Whether it was deep discussions in class or spontaneous road trips, every moment shaped how I see the world today.
Looking ahead, I want to create something meaningful—an NGO that helps teenagers build mental resilience and find purpose. At the same time, I plan to become an English teacher, using education as a tool to empower students and bridge social inequalities.
If there’s one thing I’d say to other students, it’s this: say yes to things that scare you. Take on challenges, push yourself outside your comfort zone, and don’t be afraid to fail. Growth happens in those uncomfortable moments, and every risk you take now will shape the future you want.
