Public Lecture by Prof. Arun Rai – “Creating Value with Generative AI”

MM will hold a Public Lecture on the topic “Creating Value with Generative AI” on 20 December 2023. Abstract: Generative AI (GenAI) creates human-like content, including text, images, and audio. Through self-learning with vast troves of observational data and with direct experience, it can develop emergent properties to attain goals in complex multi-agent problems. It can also tailor content for specific situations with minimal learning, where one-shot or few-shot learning picks up on particularities of the situation. I will explore how these GenAI characteristics render novel opportunities for organizations to create value through people, products, services, and work systems. I will also address its risks, encompassing deskilling, dominance, hallucinations, intellectual property, reliability, safety, and ethical issues. Lastly, I will discuss the implications of these opportunities and risks for developing and deploying GenAI solutions in organizations, while considering the interplay of an evolving labor market for AI skills and of AI regulation and policies on these development and deployment processes.   Date*    : 20 December 2023 (Wednesday) Time*   : 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. (Public Lecture)          3:30 – 4:00 p.m. (Q&A Session) *Hong Kong Time Venue   : AG710, PolyU Please register through the registration form https://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=YPc3j4exgUm4L-Xcb1vPRLiQGU2EnwNOtDVtbUjEEDNUNVQ5VjIxMVdZSEtGOUhBVkozVzYxMk0zNS4u on or before 18 Dec 2023 (Mon).   More Details

Public Lecture by Prof. Kai Chi Sam Yam – “Interacting with AI and Robots as Employees, Customers, Believers, Patients, and Students”

MM will hold a Public Lecture on the topic “Interacting with AI and Robots as Employees, Customers, Believers, Patients, and Students” on 13 December 2023. Abstract: Today, robots and AI help generate creative content, man hotels, and even make hiring decisions in the workplace. But how humans feel about them remains complicated. In this talk, I will synthesize my past and ongoing work in an attempt to answer one question: do humans enjoy interacting with robots and AI? The answer is that it depends — not so much on the types of robots or AI in question, but rather on what contexts we interact with them in. We generally prefer new technologies that serve us rather than those that work alongside us and are especially aversive to them in sacred and moral domains, such as religion and medicine. Technological affinity and cultural differences gen erally explain small variances, whereas generational differences and a lack of exposure explain larger ones. Date*    : 13 December 2023 (Wednesday) Time*   : 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. (Public Lecture)          3:30 – 4:00 p.m. (Q&A Session) *Hong Kong Time Venue   : AG710, PolyU Please register through the registration form https://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=YPc3j4exgUm4L-Xcb1vPRLiQGU2EnwNOtDVtbUjEEDNUMEZQQ1pTUTFRTktWWDJMNEdFRVZHV1pWNy4u on or before 11 Dec 2023 (Mon).   More Details

Public Lecture by Prof. Giacomo Negro – “Innovation and Cultural Production: A Study of the Popular Music Industry”

MM will hold a Public Lecture on the topic “Innovation and Cultural Production: A Study of the Popular Music Industry” on 20 October 2023. Abstract: Cultural production is a site of innovation. However, scholarly research on innovation is often confined to technology industries. I will discuss how cultural industries can be rich contexts for developing and testing theories of innovation, entrepreneurship, and creativity. My general question concerns how factors internal to the system of cultural production shape and enable change over time. In the context of the popular music industry, I will first address changes in behavior among cultural producers after winning a major award. Do winners embark on a journey of differentiation and innovation, or do they become stalwarts of current styles? Second, I will ask what production strategies, particularly patterns of professional collaboration, account for post-award behaviors of creative producers. These question are of general interest because changes in the behavior of award winners tends to shape an entire creative field, directly or indirectly. Award winners garner respect, set trends, and are emulated by many other artists.   Date*    : 20 October 2023 (Friday) Time*   : 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. (Public Lecture)          3:30 – 4:00 p.m. (Q&A Session) *Hong Kong Time Venue   : AG710, PolyU Please register through the registration form https://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=YPc3j4exgUm4L-Xcb1vPRLiQGU2EnwNOtDVtbUjEEDNUOEwzVUZLU1JPUTdTTlFKMDVDUkZIOEU5Ti4u on or before 16 Oct 2023 (Mon).   More Details
