On June 6, MM had the pleasure to host a Public Lecture on “Algorithms on Online Platforms: Three Field Experiment Studies,” presented by Prof. Tat Chan (Philip L. Siteman Professor of Marketing, Olin Business School, Washington University in St. Louis).
In the lecture, Prof. Chan shared findings from three large-scale field experiments conducted on video-sharing, music-streaming, and online retail platforms. His studies examined how algorithmic design influences user behavior, content production, and platform welfare, while also addressing methodological challenges in estimating causal effects from observational data using algorithmic scores. The talk provided valuable insights for both researchers and practitioners on the interplay between algorithms, user engagement, and platform strategy.
