Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims

Learning and teaching are our core activities. We are committed to nurturing students’ professional skills and supporting their all-round development.

Students must complete the General University Requirements, core subjects, and fundamental business subjects at an early stage. They will then choose one of the following degrees as a specialism for graduation.

BBA (Hons) in Management

Management skills are essential for all business professionals. As a field of study, management aims to maximise the potential of people and other resources within organisations.

This programme provides students with a well-rounded business education and general management training, as well as the opportunity to specialise in human resource management. Students are equipped with a wide range of management skills to give them the potential to develop as business leaders in Hong Kong, Chinese Mainland, and the region.

BBA (Hons) in Marketing

This programme is designed to help students build both the knowledge and practical skills needed to succeed in marketing in a fast-changing global environment. With engaging modules in digital marketing, business analytics, and artificial intelligence, it prepares students to navigate and lead the ongoing digital transformation in the field. Learning goes beyond the classroom through internships, experiential projects, and collaborations with industry partners, giving students the chance to apply their skills in real-world settings. By graduation, students are job-ready and empowered to pursue careers in advertising, brand management, market research, sales, digital marketing, and many other marketing-related fields.

All students in the Faculty of Business are encouraged to participate in a range of extracurricular activities, such as professional mentorship, student exchange, and other leadership development opportunities.

Work-Integrated Education (WIE)

To graduate, each student must complete 100 hours (3 training credits) of WIE. The Department offers students the opportunity to work in a firm either during the summer holidays or alongside their studies. Summer placements may be offered in Hong Kong, Chinese Mainland, or overseas. These work experiences and other forms of professional experience count towards the WIE requirement.

Admission to the Scheme

Students first follow a Common Year One curriculum under the Faculty.

The Scheme gives students approximately one year to identify their area(s) of interest and career aspirations, making it easier for them to choose a Major programme.

The decision to admit a student to a Major programme is made by the Department based on the student’s choice, overall Year One GPA, and individual subject results (i.e., MM2021 Management and Organisation and MM2711 Introduction to Marketing). Students are asked to indicate their Major programme choices during Semester 2 of Year One for the Department’s consideration and approval.

Towards the end of Year One, students can decide whether to continue with their initial choice or switch to another choice within the Faculty. Those who wish to change to another choice need to join a competitive process through a ranking assessment, which considers a combination of entrance qualification score, Year One GPA, and interview performance.

Student Message

My time at PolyU has been a transformative journey that combined rigorous academic training with leadership, service, and real-world exposure. As a BBA (Hons) in Management student with a Minor in Innovation & Entrepreneurship, I had the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge through internships in wealth management, investment banking, assurance, and business operations, as well as through strategy and valuation projects.

Beyond academics, I was fortunate to represent PolyU in meaningful learning and leadership experiences, including the University of Cambridge exchange, the Student Leaders’ Greater Bay Area and Overseas Learning Trip in Singapore, and the 13th University Scholars Leadership Symposium. These experiences broadened my global perspective and strengthened my ability to work across cultures, think strategically, and lead with purpose.

I am also deeply grateful for the recognition I received as a Millennium Fellow, along with the GBA eVTOL Infrastructure Venture at GDUT Project Excellence Award and the 2026/27 Hong Kong Future Talents Scholarship Scheme for Advanced Studies. Looking ahead to my master’s studies at HKUST, I carry with me the confidence, discipline, and global mindset that PolyU has helped me develop.

GUPTA Krishna

My four years at PolyU MM brought out the best in me. The department has been a caring and connected community, featuring a team of professors and tutors who genuinely care about every student, empowering and uplifting everyone in a personal way. The lectures were interactive, and questions were encouraged both during and after class. I was never judged or made to feel embarrassed for the questions I raised. Instead, not only were my questions answered, but I was also guided to think beyond the classroom. Whenever I reached out to my professors to share my future plans and seek advice, they constantly inspired me with thoughtful insights and personal anecdotes. They always found ways to encourage me and put faith in me, which eased my uncertainty and boosted my confidence.

Apart from connecting with professors, MM students also have plenty of opportunities to network with alumni working across various industries, which further broadened my perspective on my future career.

Learning at PolyU is not restricted to the classroom. It extends far beyond through internships (WIE), volunteer work (service-learning), extracurricular activities, and seminars. Every student is encouraged to find their own unique path of learning. I truly enjoyed my time at PolyU, and I believe what I have learned here will benefit me for a lifetime.

LI Teresa Yu Tung

During my time at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, I have gained valuable insights and experiences that have shaped my personal and professional growth. As I reflect on my journey, I am grateful for the challenging curriculum, dedicated faculty, and diverse student body that have all contributed to my development.

The rigorous coursework pushed me to think critically and apply my knowledge to solve real-world problems. Professors shared their expertise and passion for their subjects, inspiring me to strive for excellence. Collaborative projects fostered teamwork, leadership, and communication skills, preparing me for the professional world.

I am particularly grateful for the opportunities to engage with students from different cultures and backgrounds. The exchange of ideas, perspectives, and experiences has broadened my worldview and enriched my understanding of others. This global outlook has become a cornerstone of my personal development.

The compulsory service-learning component in our curriculum allowed me to serve the community by teaching English. I still remember the sleepless nights, constant preparations, and coursework submissions. However, after completing the on-site service, I was able to see the other side of the world, and it helped shape me into the person I am today. I am incredibly thankful to the university for pushing us to contribute to society.

If there is one key takeaway from my entire university life that I would like to share, it is captured by an African saying: “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.” Just remember, life is all about collaboration. Stay together, succeed together!

PATEL Janam Prakash

In the blink of an eye, I have successfully concluded my four years of university life. When I look back, all the memories flash in my mind. Thanks to PolyU and the MM family, I am deeply grateful for the abundant opportunities I received both on and off campus. All of these experiences have helped me become a well-rounded person.

Reflecting on my fruitful university journey, my skills have grown continuously. In MM, most of our courses required presentations, which challenged us to think critically and apply theories to the real business world. Furthermore, Work-Integrated Education (WIE) and internships enabled me to step out of my comfort zone and overcome obstacles logically. Through these practical experiences, I gained invaluable insights and had the opportunity to interact with various industry experts. Most importantly, I developed a clearer understanding of my preferences and was able to "test out" potential career directions at an early stage. Additionally, the MM Academy frequently organized training programs and competitions, which helped prepare us to become future leaders and successful business professionals.

Rather than simply saying goodbye to a university life that has meant so much to me, I want to thank PolyU and the MM family for giving me the character I need to keep building and the heart I need to keep loving. I will always treasure these precious memories.
