Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims

Learning and teaching are our core activities. We are committed to nurturing students’ professional skills and supporting their all-round development.

Students must complete the General University Requirements, core subjects, and fundamental business subjects at an early stage. They will then choose one of the following degrees as a specialism for graduation.

BBA (Hons) in Management

Management skills are essential for all business professionals. As a field of study, management aims to maximise the potential of people and other resources within organisations.

This programme provides students with a well-rounded business education and general management training, as well as the opportunity to specialise in human resource management. Students are equipped with a wide range of management skills to give them the potential to develop as business leaders in Hong Kong, Mainland China, and the region.

BBA (Hons) in Marketing

This programme is designed to help students build both the knowledge and practical skills needed to succeed in marketing in a fast-changing global environment. With engaging modules in digital marketing, business analytics, and artificial intelligence, it prepares students to navigate and lead the ongoing digital transformation in the field. Learning goes beyond the classroom through internships, experiential projects, and collaborations with industry partners, giving students the chance to apply their skills in real-world settings. By graduation, students are job-ready and empowered to pursue careers in advertising, brand management, market research, sales, digital marketing, and many other marketing-related fields.

All students in the Faculty of Business are encouraged to participate in a range of extracurricular activities, such as professional mentorship, student exchange, and other leadership development opportunities.

Work-Integrated Education (WIE)

To graduate, each student must complete 100 hours (3 training credits) of WIE. The Department offers students the opportunity to work in a firm either during the summer holidays or alongside their studies. Summer placements may be offered in Hong Kong, Mainland China, or overseas. These work experiences and other forms of professional experience count towards the WIE requirement.

Admission to the Scheme

Students first follow a Common Year One curriculum under the Faculty.

The Scheme gives students approximately one year to identify their area(s) of interest and career aspirations, making it easier for them to choose a Major programme.

The decision to admit a student to a Major programme is made by the Department based on the student’s choice, overall Year One GPA, and individual subject results (i.e., MM2021 Management and Organisation and MM2711 Introduction to Marketing). Students are asked to indicate their Major programme choices during Semester 2 of Year One for the Department’s consideration and approval.

Towards the end of Year One, students can decide whether to continue with their initial choice or switch to another choice within the Faculty. Those who wish to change to another choice need to join a competitive process through a ranking assessment, which considers a combination of entrance qualification score, Year One GPA, and interview performance.

Student Message

Reflecting on my four years at PolyU, the BBA in Management programme offered more than just academic training; it was an experience that shaped how I approach real-world business problems.

A defining strength of PolyU Business School is its emphasis on practical application. Through case studies, group projects and business competitions, we were constantly encouraged to turn theoretical knowledge into actionable solutions. This process pushed me to think more critically and work more efficiently under pressure.

Through competitions such as ICBC, HK2A and Techathon, under the guidance of coaching professors, I developed the ability to independently analyse market problems, design solutions and present them in a clear and structured way. For instance, in Techathon, our team had only three minutes to pitch our idea. Under such tight constraints, I learned to focus on what matters most: articulating the core problem, sharpening our value proposition and demonstrating feasibility. Through continuous iteration and feedback, I learned to translate complex ideas into concise and compelling messages.

These experiences not only gave me a clearer understanding of different career paths, but also trained me to make decisions under uncertainty and take ownership of outcomes, skills that are essential in both entrepreneurship and management.

Overall, the programme has provided me with a solid foundation in business and, more importantly, the ability to turn ideas into action. It has also strengthened my confidence in navigating uncertainty and pursuing opportunities where I can create both commercial and social value.

YU Xiaozhou

During my four years in the Management and Marketing (MM) programme at PolyU, I gained far more than I had expected: solid knowledge, broader perspectives, and meaningful friendships.

Academically, the school provides a wide range of competition opportunities, encouraging students to compete with outstanding talents from Hong Kong and around the world. These competitions cover various fields, including finance, marketing, human resources, and accounting, ensuring that students from any major can find a platform that suits their interests. Some competitions even offer overseas opportunities, which are especially valuable for students eager for international exposure. When I first started participating in business competitions, I struggled, but each experience helped me grow in confidence, analytical ability and teamwork.

In terms of career development, the Work‑Integrated Education (WIE) programme has become one of my favourite parts of university life. Being encouraged as early as sophomore year to think seriously about “work”- writing resumes, preparing for interviews, and analysing job roles - is incredibly important. Only through continuous exploration can you gradually figure out what you really want to do after graduation. The WIE program plays a crucial role in accelerating this process, and it has been immensely helpful to me.

YU Xiaohang

The PolyU BBA programme offered a rich tapestry of academic learning, hands-on experiences, and a dynamic student life. I attended well-rounded lectures and courses ranging from economics, finance, business management, and human resource management, and furthered my intellectual curiosity in applied mathematics. Additionally, I participated in the LSE summer school each year, which provided me with additional exposure, expanded my network, and allowed me to explore new academic fields while representing PolyU and engaging with university students worldwide.

Beyond academics, the Service Learning programme was most memorable. I proposed and served as a community volunteer for English-speaking young adults with special educational needs (SENs), an experience that was both rewarding and eye-opening. Additionally, the International Colloquium class held in the summer, in collaboration with Dongguan University of Science and Technology, provided exposure to new classes and people, creating another cherished memory.

PolyU’s dynamic extracurricular environment played a significant role in shaping my university life. I was actively involved in various activities and societies, including serving as Vice President for the Advanced Competition Club, where I invited industrial professionals to hold real-life business case-cracking workshops. As General Secretary for the International Students Association, our team organised an international gala night where I appreciated the diverse culture of PolyU. As Human Resources & PR Manager for the PolyU Business Club, we were able to network with alumni who are now business professionals; while my role as Global Student Ambassador for PolyU Info Day allowed me to guide prospective PolyU students and international school teachers. These experiences broadened my horizons, strengthened my leadership skills and helped me build lasting friendships across both local and international communities.

The strong foundation provided by the PolyU has opened doors to work in diverse fields such as venture capital, private equity, digital assets, material trading & sourcing, and business secretarial companies. In these roles, I have developed a versatile skill set, developing subject-matter expertise in an agile and adaptable manner. Although the last four years of adapting to Hong Kong as an expat was sometimes challenging, the inspiring people I met along the way made the journey deeply meaningful.

I am truly grateful to be a PolyU graduate. The University provided me with an exceptional academic foundation, a supportive community and a platform to launch my career on an international stage.

Pyo So Yeon

Reflecting on my four years at PolyU, the experience is a uniquely transformative chapter of academic and personal growth.

The BBA programme provided a strong foundation in management studies through courses in statistics, accounting, economics, business analytics and management theory. The diverse learning environment further enriched my development, especially through collaborations with exchange students from institutions such as Southeast University (China), IE Business School (Spain) and KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden). These experiences strengthened my global perspective and prepared me to excel in an increasingly international business landscape.

PolyU and the Faculty of Business continue to evolve and strengthen their position among leading business schools worldwide. I am proud to have been part of this community and grateful for the opportunities it has provided.

Xue Jianke

On my first day at PolyU, going on exchange to Europe was at the top of my university bucket list. I am incredibly grateful that this dream became reality, as the experience continually pushed me beyond my comfort zone and allowed me to embrace many meaningful “firsts”.

During my four-month exchange programme, I had the opportunity to explore 16 cities in 11 European countries. This journey taught me invaluable lessons that cannot be found in textbooks. Travelling to unfamiliar countries with language barriers meant encountering unexpected situations; it tested my ability to stay calm and respond to challenges. These experiences have equipped me with a resilient mindset and problem-solving skills, allowing me to embrace life’s uncertainties.

Participating in the exchange programme was one of the most extraordinary highlights of my university life. It opened the door to the wider world I had always hoped to explore, instilling in me the courage to pursue endeavours that truly inspire me. As I returned to Hong Kong, a quote I saw at the airport perfectly captured the essence of my exchange journey: “Never feel satisfied with the same old places and routine. Discover new colours of the earth”.
