Public Webinar by Prof. Jason Thatcher– “Trial-Period Technostress: A Conceptual Definition and Mixed-Methods Investigation”

MM will hold a Public Webinar on the topic “Trial-Period Technostress: A Conceptual Definition and Mixed-Methods Investigation” on 2 July 2021. Abstract: This study employs a mixed-methods approach to examine how trial use of an IT can induce stress that leads individuals to reject the IT. In our qualitative study (Study 1), we identify eight technostress creators encountered during trial use of a specific IT. Then, in our quantitative study (Study 2), we show that these trial-period technostress creators reduce user satisfaction and increase intention to reject. Also, we demonstrate that motivation to learn and personal innovativeness in IT, two individual differences, moderate the influence of trial-period technostress creators on the intention to reject. Our mixed-methods study contributes to technostress research by identifying the specific technostress creators that influence the user during trial periods and by articulating the nature of this influence. By doing so, we illustrate how the interplay of the context- and domain-specific individual differences influence the relationship between technostress creators and the intention to reject. We extend adoption research by connecting technostress creators to rejection of IT in the trial period of IT use.   More Details

MM will hold a Public Webinar on the topic “The Complexity of Organizational Citizenship Behavior: An Ongoing Effort to Understand the Dark Side of the “Good Soldier” Syndrome” on 11 June 2021. Abstract: Recent research acknowledges that prosocial behavior and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) can have both “bright” and “dark” sides. In this presentation, I will describe how I became interested in this topic and the opportunities and challenges of investigating the negative aspects of an ostensibly positive behavior. I will provide a brief overview of some of the key research my coauthors and I have conducted in this area over the years, including the role of impression management motives, the personal costs of citizenship, citizenship fatigue, and citizenship and moral licensing. I will also present the findings of my latest research with colleagues regarding the citizenship communication strategies that employees use with their partners and how these strategies influence individual initiative OCB, work-family conflict, and partner satisfaction.   More Details

Public Webinar by Prof. Aric Rindfleisch– “The Emergence and Effect of Customer Orientation in Digital Sharing Platforms”

MM will hold a Public Webinar on the topic “The Emergence and Effect of Customer Orientation in Digital Sharing Platforms” on 10 June 2021. Abstract: The concept of customer orientation has served as a key foundation for marketing thought and practice for over three decades. This concept assumes that market transactions largely occur between firms and customers. However, the advent of the digital revolution has enabled new types of exchange within peer-sharing platforms that do not fit neatly within this model. Thus, the relevance of customer orientation for these new digital platforms is uncertain. Our research investigates this issue by conducting a multi-method examination of the emergence and effect of customer orientation among contributors to digital sharing platforms. Our first study employs depth interviews among 15 contributors who share digital product creations in an online platform, while our second study combines a survey among 189 contributors along with archival data of the performance of their offerings. The results suggest that the nature of customer orientation and the manner in which it emerges are considerably different in digital sharing platforms compared to traditional market transactions. In particular, our research reveals that customer orientation can emerge organically without conventional customers or firms and that it is positively related to market performance.   More Details

Date: 11 Nov 2019 (MON) Time: 10:30am – 12:00nn Venue: M802, Li Ka Shing Tower Prof. Gerard P Hodgkinson, PhD (Sheffield), DSc (Warwick), is Professor of Strategic Management and Behavioural Science at Alliance Manchester Business School and Vice Dean for Research (Faculty of Humanities) at the University of Manchester, UK. The (co-) author of three books and more than 100 articles and book chapters, his scholarly work focuses primarily on the psychological foundations of strategic management, especially cognitive processes in strategic adaptation and the development and evaluation of techniques for mapping strategic knowledge. His most recent work has been concerned with the application of advances in the social neurosciences to the analysis of cognitive processes in strategic decision making (including the nature and role of emotion and intuition) and the evaluation of techniques for overcoming cognitive bias and inertia in such decision making. Registered with the (UK) Health and Caring Professions Council (HCPC) as a Practitioner Occupational Psychologist, over the past twenty five years Gerard has carried out numerous consultancy assignments with public and private sector organizations. He is an elected Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, the British Academy of Management, the British Psychological Society, and the Royal Society of Arts, among other bodies. Over an eight year period (1999-2006) he was the Editor-in-Chief of the British Journal of Management and for 12 years (2005-2016) he co-edited the International Review of Industrial and Organizational Psychology. He is currently an Associate Editor of the Journal of Management and serves on the editorial boards of the Academy of Management Review and Strategic Management Journal. An earlier version of his 2011 article with his Manchester-based colleague Dr. Mark Healey, on the psychological foundations of strategic adaptation (dynamic capabilities), which was published in the Strategic Management Journal, won the Business Policy and Strategy Division's Sumantra Ghoshal Research and Practice Award at the 2009 Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management (Chicago, IL).
