Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims

Learning and teaching are our core activities. We are committed to nurturing our students’ professional competence and supporting their all-round development.

Students complete some General University Requirements, Core and fundamental business subjects at an early stage. They then choose one of the following awards as their specialism for graduation.

BBA (Hons) in Management

Management skills are required by all business professionals. As an area of study, management is concerned with how to maximise the effectiveness of people and other resources within businesses.

This programme provides students with a well-rounded business education and training in general management, along with the opportunity to specialise in human resource management. Students are equipped with a wide range of management skills to give them the potential to develop as business leaders in Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland and the region.

BBA (Hons) in Marketing

This programme provides students with a well-rounded business education that includes competence in the analysis, planning, implementation and control of marketing decisions; analytical and research skills; the ability to communicate, interact and intervene in the integrative role ascribed to marketing; an appreciation of the responsibilities of marketing professionals within broader environmental and international contexts; and literacy in the use of information systems and technology relevant to marketing.

All students in the Faculty of Business are encouraged to participate in a range of extracurricular activities, such as leadership training camps, peer tutoring, and mentorship.

If students wish, subject to availability, they can spend a semester studying at another university overseas or in mainland China, with the credits counting towards their PolyU degree.

Work-Integrated Education (WIE)

To graduate, every student must complete 100 hours (3 training credits) of WIE. The Department offers opportunities for students to work in firms either during the summer vacation or alongside their studies. Summer placements may be available in Hong Kong, mainland China or overseas. These and other forms of work experience count towards the WIE requirement.

Characteristics of Scheme-based Admission

Students first follow a common curriculum under the Scheme.

The Scheme offers students approximately one year in which to identify their area(s) of interest and career aspirations, facilitating their Major programme selection.

The decision to admit a student to a Major programme is made by the Department based on the student’s choice, overall GPA of Year One study and individual subject results (i.e., MM2021 Management and Organisation and MM2711 Introduction to Marketing). Students are asked to indicate their choices of Major programme during Semester 2 of their Year One study for the Department’s consideration and approval.

In the event of oversubscription to a programme, the number of students admitted to that programme will be capped at 60% of the number of students admitted in the respective year.

Student Message

My four years at PolyU MM brought the best out of me because PolyU MM has been a caring and connected community with a team of professors and tutors who really cares every student, empowers and uplifts everyone in a personal way. The lectures were interactive. Questions were encouraged during and after the lecture. I’ve never been judged or felt embarrassed for the questions I rose. On the other hand, my questions were not only answered but I were guided to think beyond the classroom. On top of that, I reached out to my professors to share my plans for the future and asked for their advice. They constantly inspired me with their thoughtful insights and personal analogies. They always found ways to encourage and put faith in me that eased my uncertainty and boosted my confidence.

Apart from connecting with professors, MM students also have plenty of opportunities to connect with alumni who now work in different industries that further broaden my vision towards my own future planning.

Learning at PolyU is not restricted to classrooms. It goes beyond classrooms and expands in the forms of internships (WIE), volunteer works (service learning), extra curricular activities, and seminars and talks. Every student is encouraged to find their own way of learning. I really enjoyed my learning time at PolyU and I believe what I learned at PolyU is going to benefit me lifelong.

LI Teresa Yu Tung

During my time at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, I have gained valuable insights and experiences that have shaped my personal and professional growth. As I reflect on my journey, I am grateful for the challenging curriculum, dedicated faculty, and diverse student body that have all contributed to my development.

The rigorous coursework pushed me to think critically and apply my knowledge to solve real-world problems. Professors shared their expertise and passion for their subjects, inspiring me to strive for excellence. Collaborative projects fostered teamwork, leadership, and communication skills, preparing me for the professional world.

I am particularly grateful for the opportunities to engage with students from different cultures and backgrounds. The exchange of ideas, perspectives, and experiences has broadened my worldview and enriched my understanding of others. This global outlook has become a cornerstone of my personal development.

The compulsory service learning component in our curriculum allowed me to serve the community by teaching English. I still remember the sleepless nights, constant preparations, and coursework submissions. But, after the on-site service, I was able to see the other side of the world, and it changed me into the person I am today. I am incredibly thankful to the university for pushing us to contribute to society.

If there is one key takeaway from my entire university life that I would like to share, it would be based on an African saying, “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together”. Just remember, life is all about working together. Stay together, succeed together!!

PATEL Janam Prakash

In the blink of an eye, I successfully ended my four years of university life. When I think back to the past few years, all the memories flash in my mind. Thanks to PolyU and MM family, I am so grateful that I have gained abundant opportunities both on and off-campus. All these opportunities enabled me to become a well-rounded person.

Recalling my fruitful university life, my various skills have been improved incrementally. In MM, most of our courses required presentations, which allowed us to think critically and integrate the theories into the real business world. Besides, Work-Integrated Education (WIE) and internships enabled me to step out of my comfort zone and overcome challenges or obstacles logically. Throughout these work experiences, I gained invaluable insights and had an opportunity to communicate with different industry experts. Most importantly, I had already better understood my preferences and “tested out” a possible career direction at an early stage. Moreover, MM Academy often organized training programs and competitions, which shaped us to prepare to be future leaders or successful businesspeople.

Rather than saying goodbye to my university life which has meant so much to me, I will thank PolyU and MM family for giving me the character I need to keep building and the heart I need to keep loving. I will remember and treasure these memories as always.
