Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims

Learning and teaching are our core activities. We are committed to nurturing our students’ professional competence and supporting their all-round development.

Students complete the General University Requirements, Core subjects and fundamental business subjects at an early stage. They then choose one of the following awards as their specialism for graduation.

BBA (Hons) in Management

Management skills are required by all business professionals. As an area of study, management is concerned with how to maximise the effectiveness of people and other resources within businesses.

This programme provides students with a well-rounded business education and training in general management, along with the opportunity to specialise in human resource management. Students are equipped with a wide range of management skills to give them the potential to develop as business leaders in Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland and the region.

BBA (Hons) in Marketing

This programme provides students with a well-rounded business education that includes competence in the analysis, planning, implementation and control of marketing decisions; analytical and research skills; the ability to communicate, interact and intervene as part of the integrative role ascribed to marketing; an appreciation of the responsibilities of marketing professionals within broader environmental and international contexts; and literacy in the use of information systems and technology relevant to marketing.

All students in the Faculty of Business are encouraged to participate in a range of extracurricular activities, such as leadership training camps, peer tutoring and mentorship.

Subject to availability, students may choose to spend a semester studying at another university overseas or in mainland China, with the credits counting towards their PolyU degree.

Work-Integrated Education (WIE)

To graduate, every student must complete 100 hours (3 training credits) of WIE. The Department offers opportunities for students to work in firms either during the summer vacation or alongside their studies. Summer placements may be available in Hong Kong, mainland China or overseas. These and other forms of work experience count towards the WIE requirement.

Characteristics of Scheme-based Admission

Students first follow a common curriculum under the Scheme.

The Scheme offers students approximately one year in which to identify their area(s) of interest and career aspirations, facilitating their Major programme selection.

The decision to admit a student to a Major programme is made by the Department based on the student’s choice, overall GPA of Year One study and individual subject results (i.e., MM2021 Management and Organisation and MM2711 Introduction to Marketing). Students are asked to indicate their choices of Major programme during Semester 2 of their Year One study for the Department’s consideration and approval.

In the event of oversubscription to a programme, the number of students admitted to that programme will be capped at 60% of the number of students admitted in the respective year.

Student Message

I am happy to have chosen Management as my subject of study for the past four years at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Although these years have coincided with the outbreak of COVID-19, tremendous support was given by my teachers and professors. Because various tools were available for learning and resources were provided online, my learning pace was not affected. I also made use of the business theories and entrepreneurship skills that I learnt in these four years to start a small beauty salon with a friend who is also studying at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

The courses offered here have shaped me into a mature and innovative adult, and have given me ample preparation to enter the workforce. I am also grateful that since being accepted into this school I have made a lot of new friends in these four years.

CHEUNG Wing Sum Sonija

PolyU provides me with a wide range of resources and opportunities to support and improve my learning growth and ability. For example, I have learned how to properly use the PolyU Library Databases and have taken part in various workshops (e.g., Library workshops, Career Talks, Innovation and Entrepreneurship workshops, and more) and seminars.

Meanwhile, I have become more motivated to build my network and learn from people from different backgrounds by joining various clubs and societies at the University. I joined the PolyU student ambassador scheme to help parents and secondary school students learn about different majors and university life, and the Work-Integrated Education representative scheme to introduce various work opportunities to students at PolyU. I have gained valuable experience of helping students plan their future careers and studies, as well as having the chance to meet different people and learn from them.

Thanks to a recommendation from the Faculty of Business, I also secured a valuable internship with a programme co-sponsored by Google and Social Career, a non-profit organisation (NGO), providing NGOs with digital marketing plans by using Google services. In the future, I will continue to grow and engage in lifelong learning to achieve success.

CHIANG Cheuk Shing

PolyU offers valuable support and opportunities to nurture our whole-person development. These takeaways from PolyU still assist my career and personal development to this day.

For example, PolyU’s mandatory Work-Integrated Education programme encourages students to gain hands-on working experience and prepare for their careers before graduation. During my university years, I participated in several internship programmes at financial institutions, including CICC, Standard Chartered Bank, and Ernst & Young. These internships not only equipped me with practical experience in the business field but also provided opportunities to develop a professional network in order to become a more competitive graduate. In addition to the Work-Integrated Education programme, students are also invited to participate in the Mentorship Programme and Careers Development Workshops. These activities offered me insights into contemporary business practice as well as providing tailored constructive feedback on my personal development.

In addition to career development, PolyU also encourages students to care about our society. There is a compulsory service-learning course to strengthen the connections between students and the community. Through participating in the Vision Screening Service Project, I realised that some people lack access to eye care or other social services and are unable to obtain prompt treatment or assistance. I also joined the Youth Development Network of the Hong Kong Government to further exchange views with the public and improve community relations. With these learning experiences, I am confident in my ability to overcome challenges in the workplace and make valuable contributions to the community.

WAI Pak Hei Alex

My four-year study for the BBA in Management at PolyU was a fruitful journey. I am glad to have chosen this programme as it gave me the opportunity to explore the business world and develop as a well-rounded person.

This major equipped me with a comprehensive understanding of the strategies and practical skills needed by a good leader, and prepared me well to be a future leader in the workplace. PolyU encourages all students to participate in activities and learn skills through work experience. For example, the Work-Integrated Education programme enabled me to work as an intern at a real business to apply the knowledge and skills learnt in classes. Moreover, PolyU’s outbound exchange programme allows students to explore the wider world. I was pleased to have the opportunity of a study exchange in Denmark in the second semester of 2021/22, which broadened my horizons. I made friends from varied backgrounds, learnt about different cultures and communicated with people from a range of countries. Experiencing the lifestyle and education in a European country was something I would never have imagined before. It was a wonderful chance to explore the world and develop my global vision.

I feel that I had an amazing learning experience and university life at PolyU, and I was so glad to be part of the Management and Marketing family. My major programme developed my abilities and knowledge, which will help me overcome different challenges in the future.

WU WU Li Wen Yohana

Pursuing a Bachelor’s in Business Administration at the Department of Management and Marketing at PolyU was an excellent decision, and I have no regrets. PolyU gave me a fruitful university life. It granted me valuable opportunities to become a well-rounded person and to prepare for my career through various activities and Work-Integrated Education. For instance, I joined the Joint University Outstanding Marketing Award with my fellow schoolmates in my first year at PolyU. We developed a proposal to promote Tap&Go among digital natives, including the features that we most want Tap&Go to add or improve. This unforgettable experience broadened my horizons and enriched my creative thinking and communication skills. In addition, with a referral from the Management and Marketing department of PolyU, I interned at DBS Bank. After completing this Work-Integrated Education programme, I gained valuable work experience and insight and explored a possible career path.

With a nurturing environment for exploring, learning and applying skills through a range of academic and non-academic activities, I believe that the BBA programme in Management fully prepares students for their careers and enables them to become well-rounded individuals.

WAI Kwan Lung

CHEUNG Hoi Woon

“What we learn with pleasure we never forget.” This quote always reminds me of the significance of enjoying learning. Looking back upon my four years of university studies, my journey was filled with happiness and enjoyment. PolyU emphasises the importance of integrating education with fruitful learning activities. Throughout my study journey, the programme developed me into an all-rounded person who is prepared to step into society.

In addition to the professional knowledge taught in lectures and tutorials, PolyU encourages us to apply our knowledge in different settings, including Work-Integrated Education, Service Learning and various case competitions. For instance, through the Work-Integrated Education programme I acquired a myriad of internship experiences and insights that will be valuable for my career path. In addition, Service Learning is a meaningful experience that gives students the chance to contribute and give back to the community.

One of my favourite memories from my university life is competing for the Joint University Outstanding Marketing Award, which is a case competition held by the Management and Marketing department. In this competition, we are required to devise attractive marketing plans in groups of four. The competition strengthened my creativity and interpersonal skills. More importantly, throughout my university journey I built precious friendships with my teammates, and we continuously supported each other.

PolyU is an excellent place to nurture future talents. The warm support from teachers and peers is vital for the enjoyment of learning. I am thankful that in my university studies, I had supportive teachers who taught patiently and cared about my personal development. It was also invaluable to establish lifelong friendships with some of my classmates.

I became a better person after four years of university studies. I believe that the BBA (Hons) in Management programme shapes students into excellent and competent individuals.

LO Wai Ching

The benefits of the BBA (Hons) in Management at PolyU are far greater than I had expected. When I was admitted to the programme, I knew that there were many opportunities to gain diverse practical knowledge through the courses and Work-Integrated Education (WIE).

However, I soon realised that PolyU also provides a great platform to connect with various opportunities beyond the campus. For instance, I was sponsored by SAO for an offshore WIE in Indonesia. During my WIE, I collaborated with colleagues from various countries and regions to design marketing plans, as well as other ad hoc responsibilities. Beyond working on the tasks and projects involved in my WIE, I gained valuable knowledge and a global business vision through the company I was placed at, which has supported me in my career track. This experience greatly impacted my life.

PolyU provides all-rounded opportunities for us to explore and learn. The university continues to improve its BBA in Management programme to provide the best for its students, and it has equipped me with substantial business knowledge and extensive global awareness.

PANG Wai Ho

PolyU provides a unique learning experience that empowers students to realise their full potential. Support from faculty, the Work-Integrated Education programme and the well-structured curriculum equipped me with exceptional theoretical knowledge and practical skills. While working as a consultant at Ernst & Young, I was able to apply the knowledge and skills that I had gained at PolyU in real life to accomplish various management projects.

Another memorable experience was participating in the Service-Learning programme. Working with Heep Hong Society to serve students with special educational needs taught me the importance of being a good citizen who empathises with others.

Studying at PolyU was a life-changing experience that armed me with vital skills and prepared me to overcome unanticipated future challenges.

WONG Tsz Yan

Studying Management at PolyU has been a fruitful journey for me. During these four years, I have had many opportunities to equip myself with technical knowledge and to gain international exposure through various programmes organised by PolyU.

PolyU invests a great deal of resources to support students’ personal development and broaden their horizons. To fulfil the Work-Integrated Education requirement, I participated in overseas internships in China and Ireland. I had the opportunity to work with business professionals, which gave me a taste of working in the real business world. I also studied in Prague, Czech Republic as an exchange student, which enabled me to develop a global mindset by meeting people from different parts of the world. I even competed in several business competitions and was selected to join a study tour in the UK, where we took courses at local universities and visited the London Stock Exchange. These experiences were memorable and special.

PolyU and FB supported my learning and exploration for the full four years. I believe that the Management programme nurtures well-rounded graduates.

WONG Ka Yee Stephanie

PolyU has given me many valuable opportunities to become a well-rounded individual. If I had to describe my university life in just three words, I would choose “eye-opening”, “enjoyable” and “memorable”.

My academic studies have equipped me with the theoretical knowledge and skills needed to excel in the workplace. My practical skills have also been enhanced through the Work-Integrated Education programme. My internship experiences have given me insights into various industries, helping me to determine my most suitable career path.

In addition to academic and job-related knowledge, PolyU provides an array of extracurricular activities and programmes to nurture students’ whole-person development. My soft skills have been strengthened by my participation in international exchange, Service-Learning activities and student societies.

My overseas exchange trip allowed me to step out of my comfort zone, develop a global outlook and cultivate a strong cultural awareness. This once-in-a-lifetime experience added even more colour to my vibrant university life. In addition, PolyU’s Service-Learning programme enhanced my sense of civic responsibility and societal engagement. I am grateful for these opportunities to demonstrate my passion for helping people in need and to develop and exhibit service leadership. In my pursuit of excellence and personal development, I have joined various student societies, such as AIESEC, which have given me opportunities to achieve my leadership potential and gain hands-on event-management experience through organising school workshops, camps and talks to promote cultural diversity and leadership.

My graduation marks not only the end of my four-year university life at PolyU but also the beginning of a new chapter in my life. I am grateful for all of the opportunities that PolyU has given me during this journey, which has made me a more well-rounded individual. With the solid foundation and skills that I have acquired at PolyU, I am well prepared to embrace the challenges ahead. I will never stop seeking opportunities for self-improvement and growth.

LO Tsz Ching Christy

Thank you, PolyU, for offering me such a rewarding university life. I was very lucky to be given the chance to study at Yonsei University in South Korea as an exchange student. The trip was definitely fruitful. I broadened my horizons by meeting students from all over the world and exchanging ideas with Korean professors. The experience made me a more proactive and independent person. The university also encourages students to participate in different internship programmes. The career support provided by the school is very beneficial. Teachers are also friendly and willing to give career advice to students. During my four-year study at PolyU, I took part in three internship programmes, which helped me transform what I had learned in lessons into practical skills at work. I am sure that the experience has helped me to become more competitive in society.
