  • Students who wish to enrol in either the BEng (Hons) in Aviation Engineering or the BEng (Hons) in Air Transport Engineering should apply for admission to the BEng (Hons) Scheme in Aviation Engineering.

 

Deferred Choice between BEng (Hons) in Aviation Engineering and BEng (Hons) in Air Transport Engineering

Students who are admitted to the Scheme study together during the first two years and then pursue their preferred programmes, normally within the next two years, until graduation. This arrangement enables students to choose their study path once they have obtained a solid understanding of the programmes during the first two years.

Programme Aims

BEng (Hons) in Aviation Engineering

This programme aims to equip highly skilled graduates with:

  1. In-depth understanding of aviation and aeronautical engineering systems and up-to-date technologies, as well as specialised knowledge in a chosen stream of study.
  2. Competence to handle various engineering problems academically and practically in the aviation and aeronautical industry.
  3. Sufficient knowledge to manage and solve problems through effective and efficient project management and planning.
  4. Effective communication skills with different stakeholders using state-of-the-art technologies and aviation and aeronautical languages in both English and Chinese.

 

BEng (Hons) in Air Transport Engineering

This programme aims to equip highly skilled graduates with:

  1. In-depth understanding of air transport operations, resource planning, human-centred design of aviation systems and airworthiness and up-to-date technologies, as well as specialised knowledge in a chosen stream of study.
  2. Competence to handle different engineering problems practically and academically in the aviation industry.
  3. Sufficient knowledge and skills to effectively and efficiently manage various projects related to the aviation sector.
  4. Skills to communicate effectively with different stakeholders by using state-of-the-art technologies and aviation languages in both English and Chinese.

 

Programme Characteristics

The Aviation Engineering Scheme aims to train students to become aeronautical and aviation engineers who possess strong skills in and in-depth knowledge of engineering and engineering management, as well as a sense of social and environmental responsibility.

 

BEng (Hons) in Aviation Engineering

Graduates are equipped to pursue careers in aircraft maintenance engineering, aircraft component engineering, aeronautical engineering, aircraft design, control and propulsion systems, navigation, unmanned aerial vehicles and many other engineering disciplines. The programme provides hands-on experience with the support of state-of-the-art facilities, such as supersonic wind tunnels, UAV testing systems and material manufacturing and testing platforms.

 

BEng (Hons) in Air Transport Engineering

Graduates are equipped to pursue careers in air transport engineering, airport/airline operations and management, aviation safety, air logistics and supply chain management, and human factors engineering. The programme provides hands-on experience with the support of state-of-the-art facilities, such as the Cockpitsonic A320 FTD flight simulator, Cessna flight simulator, avionic systems and human factors equipment.

Professional Recognition

The BEng (Hons) in Aviation Engineering and BEng (Hons) in Air Transport Engineering programmes have been granted full accreditation by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).

 

Career Prospects

Graduates are equipped to seek employment in professional aircraft maintenance engineering and pilot training sectors. Some of our AAE graduates pursue master's or doctoral degrees at local or overseas universities based on their interests and career aspirations.

 

BEng (Hons) in Aviation Engineering

Graduates of BEng (Hons) in Aviation Engineering can pursue careers in various areas of aviation engineering, such as aircraft maintenance engineering, aeronautical engineering, aircraft design and control and propulsion systems. They also have extensive opportunities to join public and private aviation technology and R&D sectors.

 

BEng (Hons) in Air Transport Engineering

Graduates of BEng (Hons) in Air Transport Engineering can pursue careers in various areas of air transport engineering, including airline/airport operations, flight standards and airworthiness,  aviation safety and reliability, air transport and supply chain management, and human factors engineering. They also have extensive opportunities to join public and private aviation technology and R&D sectors.

Curriculum

The 124 academic credits required consist of 30 mandatory credits of General University Requirements (GUR) and 94 credits of Discipline-Specific Requirements (DSR).

 

BEng (Hons) in Aviation Engineering

First Study Year

The curriculum is common to both programmes. Students receive a broad education in mathematics and science, and learn about the role and responsibilities of an engineer. Together with two introductory subjects on aircraft and aviation systems, this arrangement provides students with a strong foundation for their continued study of aviation engineering.

 

Second Study Year 

The curriculum is common to both programmes. Students acquire knowledge of materials, mechanics, and electrical and electronics engineering that are fundamental to aircraft and aviation systems. In addition, students gain hands-on experience of aircraft component manufacturing and maintenance.

 

Third Study Year 

The third-year curriculum provides students with more advanced knowledge of aircraft structure and materials, aerodynamics, propulsion, aircraft dynamics, and control and avionics to strengthen their core knowledge base and support their further study.

 

Final Study Year

Students can apply their skills and knowledge in a final-year project to further develop their professional skills as an engineer. Each student can choose a topic that interests them, such as unmanned aerial vehicles, avionics or aircraft design. They can also choose to focus on a desired elective stream to acquire specialised knowledge.

 

BEng (Hons) in Air Transport Engineering

First Study Year

Final Study Year

Students can apply their skills and knowledge in a final-year project on operations research, airworthiness and regulation, or aviation project management to build up their professional skills as engineers. They can also focus on a desired elective stream to acquire specialised knowledge.

 

Stream study for BEng (Hons) in Aviation Engineering and BEng(Hons) in Air Transport Engineering

Students can choose to pursue one of the following study streams:

  • Aeronautical Engineering
  • Aviation Services Engineering
  • Aircraft Maintenance Engineering*

* Students who opt for the HKAR-147 Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Training (for HKAR-66 Cat. B1.1 Aircraft Maintenance license) are required to choose the Aircraft Maintenance Engineering stream. The professional aircraft maintenance training option conducted in accordance with the HKAR-147 (for the HKAR-66 Cat. B1.1 Aircraft Maintenance License) is available to students enrolled on both programmes with an additional training fee.

 

Other Learning Experiences

Summer internships, industry visits, on-site experience sharing and industrial training are arranged to complement classroom teaching and enhance students’ learning and industry experience in the fields of aeronautics and aviation. Industrial training is provided by the PolyU Industrial Centre.

 

Work-Integrated Education

Students are required to undertake at least two weeks of full-time WIE in a suitable organisation before graduation.

Student Message

Time flies. As I write this, I have already completed my studies for my Bachelor’s degree. My journey in AE had been fruitful and exciting. The courses had given me solid theoretical knowledge of aeronautical and aviation engineering, and training in the Industrial Centre (IC) had strengthened my understanding of hands-on practical tasks in aviation engineering via a simulated environment.

 

The industry exposure offered by the AE programme also taught me more about various roles in aviation. Some of my peers interned with local aviation authorities, airlines, and MROs, and I did on-the-job training in a local MRO through the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers’ Aircraft Engineer Development Scheme. During the pandemic, I also interned with OpenAirlines, working on aircraft noise modelling. The internship exposed me to numerous aviation career pathways and introduced me to research and development in the field.

 

Although AAE offers close industry connections, with some classes taught by industry practitioners, academic scholarship is the bedrock of the Department. AAE offers undergraduate research opportunities with support from academic staff. My core research interests are aviation operations and human factors in aviation. During my undergraduate research project, I had the invaluable opportunity to extend my minor studies of applied psychology to aviation and deepen my understanding through enquiry-based study.

 

Offering solid academic support and close industry connections, the AE programme is the right choice for anyone who wishes to study aviation at the undergraduate level. This is where your aviation journey will truly take off.

YIU Cho Yin

This programme prepares students to excel in the aviation industry, and provides a wide range of learning opportunities, such as pilot-based and manufacturing electives.

 

One of the highlights of my time as an AAE student was assisting with the research on UAV urban navigation. This equipped me with a lot of technical skills that were not taught in class. Besides various research opportunities, entering competitions gave me valuable hands-on experience. I even built a carbon-fibre model aircraft for the AIAA DBF competition. The Department offers many resources to support students’ learning. Moreover, the programme is taught by world-renowned professors and experts from the industry.

CHENG Cheuk Wai

During my four years as an undergraduate studying aviation engineering, I acquired extensive knowledge and skills in various areas of the aviation industry, from theoretical knowledge of aerodynamics, flight stability, and avionics to practical technical skills in aircraft maintenance and component manufacturing.

 

The programme gave me international exposure. I received HKAR-66 AML training under the Aircraft Engineer Development Scheme offered by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. I took an exchange study trip to the University of Surrey, UK to attend challenging aerospace courses. I also worked as an engineering intern in a UAV start-up company named Nordluft Automation in Stockholm, Sweden.

 

I also had the chance to intern as a technician in the HKCAD, during which I gained a tremendous amount of insights into and experience the Hong Kong aviation industry. Last but not least, I undertook a fascinating and fruitful final-year project. My team and I designed and built a learning-based navigation system for a quadrotor UAV to accomplish autonomous object-searching and object-tracking in an unknown environment with collision-free flight. To conclude, this four-year programme was definitely a fulfilling learning journey for any aviation enthusiast.

YIU Chi Hao

I strongly recommend this programme to students who wish to equip themselves to become professionals in the aviation industry. The programme broadened my horizons and enriched both my technical knowledge and my non-technical knowledge. The programme is taught by both world-renowned professors and experts from the industry.

 

Besides, AAE provides various opportunities for undergraduate students to participate in events and activities, such as joining international exchanges, internships, and competitions. One of the highlights of my AAE studies was entering the AIAA DBF competition. This is an annual competition that takes place in the USA. Students have the chance to design, build and fly an aircraft, competing with teams from 100 universities worldwide. I entered the competition for two years in a row and served as a team leader. Through this competition, I had the opportunity to put my theoretical understanding of various subjects into practice by creating an actual flying machine. With AAE’s solid support and world-class facilities, we were the only team from a Hong Kong university that managed to construct our aircraft from a carbon fibre composite. Furthermore, the competition gave me the chance to learn soft skills such as project management, acquiring funding, and teamwork.

 

I very much enjoyed my time at PolyU as an aviation engineering student. I strongly recommend this programme to all students who are looking to join this fast-growing industry as professionals.

CHAN Man Hei

Unlike many of my peers, who were passionate about aviation before entering ATE, I became interested in aviation during my studies at PolyU. I learned much from the diverse curriculum, from aircraft structure and working principles to aircraft maintenance practices. Practical lessons in the IC also consolidated my understanding of aircraft maintenance, a key area of the industry.

 

In addition to taking programme-specific subjects and receiving IC training, I undertook the HKAR-147 aircraft maintenance training offered by AAE. I acquired a deeper knowledge of aircraft maintenance, helping me to pursue my goal of becoming an aircraft maintenance engineer. I was also lucky enough to learn both theoretical and practical skills from experienced professionals in the industry.

 

I also interned at China Aircraft Services Limited during my studies. Although practical maintenance training had unfortunately been suspended due to the pandemic, I gained additional out-of-the-classroom knowledge and familiarised myself with my future work environment. Lastly, I had the invaluable opportunity to enter the HKIE CA Paper competition. Being awarded the championship was a perfect end to my university life.
