Recognition & Prospects

Professional Recognition

The BEng (Hons) in Aviation Engineering and BEng (Hons) in Air Transport Engineering programmes have been granted full accreditation by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).

Curriculum

The 124 academic credits required consist of 30 mandatory credits of General University Requirements (GUR) and 94 credits of Discipline-Specific Requirements (DSR).

BEng (Hons) in Aviation Engineering

First Study Year

The curriculum is common to both programmes. Students receive a broad education in mathematics and science, and learn about the role and responsibilities of an engineer. Together with two introductory subjects on aircraft and aviation systems, this arrangement provides students with a strong foundation for their continued study of aviation engineering.

Second Study Year

The curriculum is common to both programmes. Students acquire knowledge of materials, mechanics, electrical and electronics engineering that are fundamental to aircraft and aviation systems. In addition, students gain hands-on experience of aircraft component manufacturing and maintenance.

Third Study Year

The third year curriculum provides students with more advanced knowledge of aircraft structure and materials, aerodynamics, propulsion, aircraft dynamics, and control and avionics. This strengthens their core knowledge base and supports their further study.

Final Study Year

Students can apply their skills and knowledge in a final-year project to build up their professional skills as an engineer. Each student can choose a topic that interests them, e.g. unmanned aerial vehicles, avionics, or aircraft design. They can also choose to focus on a desired elective stream to acquire specialised knowledge.

Third Study Year

Students first build up their core knowledge of aviation safety, reliability, aircraft performance, flight management, airport services engineering, airline operations and human factors engineering. This gives them a solid understanding of aviation and furthers and supports their pursuit of a specialised stream of study.

Final Study Year

Students can apply their skills and knowledge in a final-year project on operations research, airworthiness and regulation, or aviation project management to build up their professional skills as engineers. They can also focus on a desired elective stream to acquire specialised knowledge.

Stream study for BEng (Hons) in Aviation Engineering and BEng(Hons) in Air Transport Engineering

Students can choose to pursue one of the following study streams:

  • Aeronautical Engineering
  • Aviation Services Engineering
  • Aircraft Maintenance Engineering*

* Students who opt for the HKAR-147 Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Training (for HKAR-66 Cat. B1.1 Aircraft Maintenance license) are required to choose the Aircraft Maintenance Engineering stream. The professional aircraft maintenance training option conducted in accordance with the HKAR-147 (for the HKAR-66 Cat. B1.1 Aircraft Maintenance License) is available to students enrolled in both programmes with an additional training fee.

Other Learning Experiences

Summer internships, industry visits, on-site experience sharing, and industrial training are arranged to complement classroom teaching and enhance students’ learning and industry experience in the fields of aeronautics and aviation. Industrial training is provided by the PolyU Industrial Centre.

Work-Integrated Education

Students are required to undertake at least two weeks of full-time WIE in a suitable organisation before graduation.

Student Message

PolyU’s AAE programme provides students with a well-balanced curriculum of technical subjects such as aerodynamics and aircraft structures while also teaching them about the ever-important aspects of engineering management and engineering responsibilities and more. The programme is great for those who are looking to make a career for themselves in aviation as Hong Kong is one of the biggest aviation hubs in the world.

The highlight of my studies has been my participation in AAE’s AIAA DBF team where a team of AAE students entered a competition to design, build, and fly their own RC aircraft. Students were responsible for designing aircraft aerodynamics, structures, choosing the appropriate materials and propulsion systems and more. On top of that, the team of students was responsible for attracting sponsors, having meetings etc. So, if you are a student who is passionate about engineering and aviation and wants meaningful practical work experience during your studies, I would highly recommend you apply to the AAE programme!

KHAN Raafey Masood

I call Hong Kong my second home. I still remember the very first day I stepped into HK - it seemed like I was all at sea. Everything was new and different; but, the people of HK were very welcoming and comforting. Soon university life began and things started to fall into place.

The vigorous courses offered at PolyU have made me a keen learner - always looking forward to exploring new knowledge. By providing a wide range of diverse courses and offshore summer and semester exchange, and research opportunities, PolyU takes its undergraduate degree to a different and extraordinary level. Not only does PolyU encourage its students to participate in several international competitions but also provides all the facilities an undergraduate engineering student may need, such as the Industrial Centre (the only one in Hong Kong), 3D Printing labs, Aircraft Simulators, and a lot more.

I, myself, had availed almost all the opportunities and participated in a Design, Build, and Fly competition organized by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics where we designed and manufactured an RC aircraft from scratch according to some set missions and fly it. I must say, AAE provided the perfect platform for me to grow as a student and a prospective leader.

If you are someone who thrives for excellence and constantly explores opportunities, then you will be amazed Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering (AAE) has to offer. The courses are designed not only to make you understand the advanced concepts of Aeronautical Engineering but will also provide you with adequate knowledge to deal with the job industry.

As an international student, I am always surprised by how supportive and encouraging PolyU and the Department are to their students. If we are talking about facilities and teaching quality, PolyU has state-of-the-art facilities for its students coupled with excellent faculties who have proven their capabilities in the fields of education and research. I learned to explore my skills; my strengths as well as weaknesses and PolyU never failed to support me to improve myself as a person and student. I can vouch for PolyU and vouch for the programme to be a life-changing major for those who pursue excellence.
