Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

The Beng (Hons) Scheme in Electrical Engineering consists of the following degrees. It aims to give students the flexibility to decide on their final degree during their study.

  • Beng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering provides in-depth coverage of electrical engineering based on an outcome-based education philosophy. The programme produces engineers who are able to practise their professions in a wide range of areas of electrical engineering, such as electrical power systems, energy conversion and utilisation, transportation systems, environmental protection, control, and computer and fibre-optic applications.

A modern electrical engineer should possess a broad-based education and the specialist knowledge needed to undertake high-level work in design, planning, supervision, and manufacturing. The programme thus emphasises the need for mastery of fundamental principles and the application of latest engineering technology. Of equal importance is training in leadership, entrepreneurship, and communication skills.

We encourage lifelong learning to enable graduates to keep abreast of new developments in engineering and technology.
  • BEng (Hons) in Transportation Systems Engineering aims to make full use of the hugely versatile applications of the in-demand disciplines of electrical engineering to broaden the career opportunities available to our graduates. Students are expected to acquire a solid understanding of the fundamentals of electrical engineering and apply the knowledge gained and techniques learned to relevant areas in the field of transportation systems.

The programme philosophy focuses on the incorporation of current engineering knowledge into transportation systems to enhance the efficiency, reliability, safety, and maintainability of infrastructure and services. Exploring current practices in transportation and the latest technologies in transportation systems and integrating them to provide engineering solutions to practical problems form the core of the programme.

Student Message

As a BEng (Hons) Electrical Engineering student at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), I can attest to the university's reputation for providing world-class engineering programmes. I was immersed in a challenging and stimulating environment that pushed me beyond what I had thought were my limits and helped me to thrive. One of the programme's highlights was the hands-on experience gained through laboratory work and projects, which allowed me to apply theoretical concepts to real-world situations, develop practical skills, and gain a sense of accomplishment and confidence in my abilities. I was exposed to diverse topics throughout the programme, including power engineering, electrical machines, control systems, and communications.

Learning about emerging technologies fuelled my curiosity about the future of the field. I had ample opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities, collaborate with classmates in projects, and attend events and seminars. I also went on two exchanges. Spending summers and a semester in Europe was an unforgettable experience as it broadened my horizons and gave me a chance to explore another part of the world. These experiences helped me build connections and form friendships. Studying at PolyU is a transformative experience that helped me grow personally and professionally. I am proud to be part of such a prestigious university.

I chose BEng (Hons) Electrical Engineering as my study programme in PolyU as it is the only programme that covers the area I most want to learn about. My studies equipped me with theoretical knowledge and practical training experiences that allowed me to have internship opportunities in universities worldwide and in start-up companies. I also participated in long-term projects in robotics, power electronics, and even supply chain management. Each experience gave me new knowledge and increased the excitement of my university life. I explored as much as possible to learn different sectors of science and technology, and – more importantly – to enhance my own capabilities.

Studying electrical engineering helped me to develop into a self-confident, adaptable individual capable of keeping up with the constantly changing tech world. I am glad to be finishing my studies with a graduate job offer at Deloitte’s Cybersecurity team. Perhaps this is my opportunity to continue my voyage of exploration or the key to my final destination. I look forward to finding out!
