Professor Chen Xiaojun, Chair Professor of Applied Mathematics Conferred SIAM Fellowship 2021

Congratulations to Professor Chen Xiaojun, Chair Professor of the Department of Applied Mathematics (AMA) at PolyU who is named 2021 Fellow of the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) in recognition of her contributions to optimization, stochastic variational inequalities, and nonsmooth analysis. Professor Chen has an excellent track record in academic research and research leadership. She has published over 80 research papers in top journals of applied mathematics. She was invited to give plenary and semi-plenary talks at many international conferences in the USA, Europe, South America, Australia and Asia. She was elected as a semi-plenary speaker at the 21st International Symposium on Mathematical Programming 2012 in Berlin, Germany.  This is the flagship event of the Mathematical Optimization Society held every three years. Prof. Chen has won 20 grants as a principal investigator from Australian Research Council, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Sciences and the Hong Kong Research Grants Council. Professor Chen has made a highly significant contribution to the promotion and maintenance of high professional standards in mathematical research in PolyU as Head of AMA (until June 2019) and the Director of University Research Facility in Big Data Analytics at PolyU and Co-Director of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science (AMSS) and PolyU Joint Laboratory of Applied Mathematics. Chair Professor Sun Defeng, Head of Department of Applied Mathematics Honoured as an Inaugural CSIAM Fellow

Congratulations to Chair Professor Sun Defeng, Head of Department of Applied Mathematics at PolyU for being selected as one of the eight elected Inaugural Fellows of the China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (CSIAM). CSIAM Fellow is an honorific title for life, in recognition of its distinguished members for their contributions to the field of industrial and applied mathematics. Early in April 2020, Professor Sun was conferred as 2020 Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) in recognition of his contributions to algorithms and software for conic optimization, particularly matrix optimization. Focusing on research of the development of efficient optimization algorithms for solving large‐ scale complex optimization problems, statistical regression models and machine learning problems, Professor Sun devised a world‐ recognized second‐order sparsity solution that renders data with more precision and depth than traditional methods, efficiently separating useful data from useless data and uncovering minute information on a large scale. This solution is the first of its kind and is beneficial across all industries and research fields, revolutionizing the way of leveraging data and making prediction on behaviour on the information highway. Professor Sun also serves as an Associate Editor of SIAM Journal on Optimization, Mathematical Programming, Journal of the Operations Research Society of China, and Journal of Computational Mathematics and Science China Mathematics. He has been an Advisory Committee Member of Asia‐ Pacific Journal of Operational Research since 2014, and is invited as a plenary speaker at the SIAM Conference on Computational Science and Engineering (CSE21) to be held in 2021. AMA Emeritus Professor Qi Liqun named Highly Cited Researcher 2020

The Department of Applied Mathematics (AMA) extends heartfelt congratulations to our Emeritus Professor Qi Liqun who is once again on the list of Clarivate™ Highly Cited Researchers in 2020. The highly anticipated annual list unveiled on 18 November 2020 identifies researchers who demonstrated significant influence in their chosen field or fields through the publication of multiple highly cited papers during the last decade. Their names are drawn from the publications that rank in the top 1% by citations for field and publication year in the Web of Science™ citation index. 6,167 researchers from more than 60 countries and regions have been recognized this year. Professor Qi is named the Highly Cited Researcher in the field of Mathematics for the third time since 2018. Having published more than 330 research papers in international journals, Professor Qi’s works have been cited by researchers around the world. According to the Google Scholar, Professor Qi has received an H-index value of 68 and his work has been cited over 21,200 times as of November 2020. Professor Qi established the superlinear and quadratic convergence theory of the semismooth Newton method, and played a principal role in the development of reformulation methods in optimization. In 2005, he pioneered the research on eigenvalues for higher order tensors, which now has applications in biomedical engineering, statistical data analysis, spectral hypergraph theory, solid mechanics, quantum mechanics, etc. He has more than 110 papers on tensors, published or accepted for publication in international journals. His books ‘Tensor Analysis: Spectral Theory and Special Tensors’ and ‘Tensor Eigenvalues and Their Applications’ have been published by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) in 2017 and Springer in 2018, respectively.
