- Switching between specialisms after admission to this MSc programme will be considered on a case-by-case basis. For example, a local student who is enrolled in the Actuarial and Investment Science specialism can transfer to the Decision Science specialism, or vice versa, if he or she fulfils the specialism requirements (application is subject to approval). Non-local students holding student visa should only be registered in full-time programme.
Aims and Characteristics
The Master of Science in Applied Mathematics for Science and Technology is to provide mathematical modelling and computational techniques that are useful to engineers, scientists, technologists and managers and to focus on applications and the use of computer packages to solve practical problems.
Actuarial and Investment Science specialism (AIS) is to provide students with a solid foundation of actuarial and investment science and to allow graduates to become leading professionals in these areas.
Our curriculums are well designed to cover the wide topics in statistics, insurance, financial mathematics and decision making, which are essential in the training of our students with a solid foundation as professionals in insurance, investment, finance and engineering.
The Department of Applied Mathematics has a strong team of researchers in applied statistics, financial mathematics and operations research to facilitate the teaching of the programme. In particular, Mathematics in PolyU has achieved remarkable recognition in recent years. In the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Ranking 2021, PolyU is listed the world top 100 in Statistics and Operational Research. PolyU is also ranked 54 in Best Universities for Mathematics by U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities 2022.
Our graduates will become leading professionals in engineering, finance management, banking and finance, insurance company and related sectors. In particular, as Hong Kong is one of the leading financial centers and Mainland China has the fastest growing economics in the world, there is a great demand in personnel being competent and with the knowledge in actuarial and investment science. In recent years our graduates in Actuarial and Investment Science specialism have continuously secured internship positions in leading insurance companies and investment banks as actuaries and data analysts in both Hong Kong and Mainland China.
