Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

Our mission is to educate young people to pursue professional careers in nursing, one of the world’s most “caring” professions. This innovative academic programme develops students’ competency in delivering quality care, carrying out relevant research, and making significant contributions to the health of the community.

Students master skills in clinical reasoning, communication, and the use of technology. They also learn how to work efficiently alone and with other healthcare professionals to provide quality healthcare.

Programme Characteristics

PolyU was the first university in Hong Kong to provide a pre-registration degree programme in nursing. Our innovative approaches to learning and teaching enhance our students’ critical thinking and clinical decision making skills, and our graduates are both leaders in the nursing profession and responsible global citizens.

Our modern facilities include nursing therapeutics laboratories (equipped and furnished as virtual clinical wards with simulation laboratories and other new technologies), mental health nursing laboratories, the Yuen Yuen Institute Chinese Medicinal Nursing Laboratory, the Dorothy Wong Intensive Care Laboratory, Gerontological Nursing Laboratory, the Herbal Medicine Learning Centre, the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Community Health Services, and the Yuen Yuen Institute Learning Resources Centre.

Field practice is arranged in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, old age homes, day care centres, and other community centres. We also offer a wide range of overseas student exchange programmes. To obtain properly balanced and comprehensive clinical experiences, students have opportunities to adapt to a variety of practicum locations, environments and rotating work schedules.

Recognition & Prospects

Professional Recognition

The programme is accredited by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong, and graduates are eligible to apply for registration as Registered Nurses (General).

Career Prospects

Graduates are eligible to become Registered Nurses (General) in Hong Kong. They can find employment in numerous clinical and community settings or further pursue specialist areas of study.

The majority of graduates work in the health sector, either under the Hospital Authority or in private organisations such as private hospitals or old age homes. Some graduates undertake research work.

Other graduates pursue further studies. Many enrol in post-registration clinical training and education at local and overseas institutions.

Some graduates work overseas after obtaining the appropriate licences from foreign countries.

Curriculum

This is a five-year full-time programme leading to registration with the Nursing Council of Hong Kong as a Registered Nurse (General). The programme equips students to provide holistic care that encompasses safe, ethical, legal, and culturally sensitive nursing therapeutics delivered to clients of all ages and their families in various healthcare settings.

Students develop skills in critical inquiry, constantly acquiring new knowledge and using evidence to support their development of generic and all-round attributes such as critical thinking, problem solving and lifelong learning. The course is broad-based, with a strong emphasis on professional education and a flexible curriculum design. It has the following characteristics:

  • A continuous focus on the philosophical underpinnings of the concepts of person, environment, health, nursing and caring along with an emphasis on clinical reasoning and person-centred care. The programme embraces introductory and applied subjects, as well as biological, social sciences, and humanities subjects, to develop students’ understanding of the biological and psychosocial dimensions of the human condition and healthcare. Students gain comprehensive foundational knowledge of anatomy, physiology, psychology, sociology, caring concepts, clinical reasoning, and decision making in action.

  • Coverage of nursing therapeutics, child and adolescent health nursing, childbearing family nursing, adult nursing, mental health nursing, gerontological nursing, community health nursing, nursing therapeutics in Chinese medicine and nursing research.

  • Supervised field studies allow students to integrate theory and practice.

  • An Honours project with capstone experience enables students to apply their knowledge of nursing research and engage in evidence-based practice.

  • A specific set of General University Requirement subjects, including Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Leadership Education and Development, Healthy Lifestyle, Language and Communication, Service Learning and Broadening subjects, provides our students with a broad knowledge base for holistic professional learning.

Student Message

My dream came true in 2017, when I enrolled in the PolyU School of Nursing. For the last four years, I have learned hard and soft nursing skills, such as communication skills, leadership, and cultural awareness. These are essential skills for a competent nurse.

I enjoy the liberal and open learning environment at the School of Nursing. My teachers provide guidance for students of all types and my classmates are supportive. They have shaped my values. I have participated in clinical placements and community health services in various local health care settings and the experiences have broadened my horizons. The School’s exchange programme gave me the opportunity to visit Ningxia and Yangzhou in mainland China and meet students there to learn more about their local culture.

PolyU encourages invention and innovation. I received a scholarship to support my development of a self-initiated mobile app project. My team received an honourable mention by the judges of a one-minute video competition organised by the PolyU Health, Safety and Environment Office. Our video, “Rainbow Hands” (七色彩虹手) used the seven colours of the rainbow to help the audience understand the concept of seven steps of hand hygiene. My life at PolyU is fruitful!

Ip Ka Yan Lorelei

The five-year Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Nursing programme does more than nurture students to become competent registered nurses.

The School also cares about students’ learning experience. It offers a broad range of subjects for study, enabling students to find the right mix of subjects to suit our interests. Interactive lectures and laboratory sessions have given me an enjoyable and effective learning experience. The clinical placement provides students with opportunities to link theories with real practice situations and patient expectations. I have applied the knowledge and skills that I had learned in the clinical setting and received training that helped to improve my critical thinking and communication skills.

Participating in the School’s overseas exchange programme was one of the best parts of my university life. I made new friends with different cultural backgrounds and learned more about the healthcare system in another country. The programme has broadened my horizon and cultivated my interest in global healthcare issues.

Yeung Yu Ho

I did not have big dreams when I was young. All I wanted was to take good care of my parents when they grow old. Therefore, jobs in the medical field, such as nursing, have always been my first career choice. When I wrote my JUPAS application, PolyU’s Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Nursing programme was at the top of my list.

Studying nursing at PolyU helped me understand the roles and duties of nurses. Today, nurses are no longer assistants to doctors. The principle of the three “H”s – “heads, hands and hearts” – guides our nursing practice. Knowledge, professional judgement, advanced nursing skills, and kind-heartedness are requisites for becoming a competent nurse.

Finally, I wish to thank my teachers and professors for their guidance and encouragement, and my classmates for their support. Although we had some hard times during the study, we learned a lot.
