Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

We provide a challenging and relevant education in radiography that encompasses medical imaging and radiation therapy.

An enquiring, analytical and creative approach to learning is encouraged so that students develop the clinical reasoning skills that they need to become competent and responsible professionals.

Our programme produces ethical and caring practitioners who are keen to pursue professional development and take on wider community responsibilities.

Our student-centred learning approach encourages independence in learning, enabling our graduates to keep abreast of developments in a dynamic profession.

Programme Characteristics

This programme comprises academic and clinical components.

Collaborations with universities in the Chinese mainland and overseas provide student exchange opportunities.

Recognition & Prospects

Professional Recognition

Graduates are eligible for registration in Part Two of the Register of the Radiographers Board of Hong Kong. They are also recognised by many overseas registration bodies, including those in the UK, Singapore, New Zealand and Australia (after gaining 1 year of clinical experience).

Career Prospects

Our graduates can find employment with the Hospital Authority, which recognises the degree as an entry qualification.

Employment opportunities are also available in private hospitals, in clinics and laboratories, and in the commercial sector. As the degree is recognised in many countries, many of our graduates take up employment in Australia, Canada, the UK, New Zealand and Singapore.

Postgraduate study opportunities are available in Hong Kong and overseas.

Curriculum
  • Year 1 establishes a foundation for degree-level education in relevant subject areas and develops the generic attributes required of graduates.

  • Year 2 provides the basis for gaining professional knowledge in the following years. It incorporates a range of professionally related Foundation Subjects and has a strong student-centred learning format.

  • Years 3 and 4 deepen students’ learning of professional knowledge and integrate academic learning with applied clinical experience.

  • In Year 2, students can choose a concentration in medical imaging or radiation therapy. This continues into Year 4, which also provides a range of Elective Subject options for the continuous development of students’ learning.

Information on the subjects offered can be obtained here.

Student Message

It has been a sheer privilege to receive my Radiography (Medical Imaging) education at the HTI where a profound knowledge base is bestowed on students. The well-structured clinical placement curriculum has enabled me to have an authentic taste of working as a true diagnostic radiographer. Not only did I become more knowledgeable, but I also have a clearer understanding of my future development within this profession.

I am particularly thankful that the HTI has opened many doors for me throughout the past four years. Even in the first year, I was honoured to take part in an academic exchange program in Taiwan to visit their local hospitals. While laying the foundation for student’s character establishment, I was encouraged to become an Executive Committee Member of the Student Ambassador of Radiography, as well as a peer tutor for medical imaging and clinical skills modules. The Department has continuously unveiled my potential by equipping me with many prestigious scholarships and award applications. With exposure to such opportunities, I have no doubt that this is a perfect place to guide students in becoming strongminded and all-rounded professionals.

CHAN Chun Wai, Jan

The Department of Health Technology and Informatics (HTI) has offered me unreserved support throughout the 4-year Radiography programme (specialism in Radiation Therapy). The comprehensive curriculum encompasses a broad spectrum of foundation knowledge (e.g. Human Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Physics, etc.), clinical skills and professional practices in Radiation Therapy. This has equipped me with ample evidence-based knowledge of Radiation Therapy and its latest and future development. The excellent mentoring and customised guidance from the high-calibre teaching team also facilitated me to transform my academic knowledge into professional practical know-how during my clinical placement since year 2. Most importantly, I am holistically prepared for delivering the best possible treatment and care for each patient in the future. What is more is that my mentors have provided me with abundant opportunities to develop my research skills and interests, facilitating me to complete my first ever academic publication related to radiotherapy for paediatric cancer patients in an international journal during my final year. Last but not least, I am wholeheartedly grateful for all the unparalleled and endless support from the Department of HTI.
