Entry Scholarship
To recognise high academic attainment, the Department will grant entry scholarships to eligible students with outstanding HKDSE scores admitted via JUPAS.

All admitted students embark on a Common Year One curriculum. Towards the end of year one, students can decide whether to continue with their initial choice or switch to another choice within the Faculty. Those who wish to change to another choice need to join a competitive process through a ranking assessment, which considers a combination of entrance qualification score, Year One GPA, and interview performance.
Aims & Objectives
The programme aims to produce architecture graduates who are capable of adopting advanced technologies and innovations in practice to support the growth of the construction industry. Its primary objective is to provide quality education to familiarise architecture students with the latest advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) related to architecture, construction, building materials and building services to respond to the challenges of sustainable development in the built environment. The uniqueness of this programme lies in its integration of knowledge and analytical tools, digital skills and transferable skills with design capabilities for the needs of the architectural profession. Graduates will develop critical thinking, a research-driven mindset, and advanced problem-solving skills to lead technological innovation in design.
Programme Characteristics
The programme is hosted by the Department of Architecture (ARCH) and co-hosted by the School of Design (SD).
The curriculum includes advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) in architecture, data analytics, 3D printing, Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (CAVE), Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality (AR/VR) and Building Information Modelling (BIM). These technologies will be embedded in relevant technical subjects of the programme and the Architecture and Spatial Design Studios.
Practical training/internship (Work-Integrated Education) will be a compulsory element of the curriculum. Students usually complete their internship during the summer period.

Career Prospects
Graduates will readily find employment as professional trainees in architectural firms, construction companies and government departments such as the Architectural Services Department, the Buildings Department and the Housing Department, as well as other quasi-public organisations and private companies involved in urban planning and architectural development. The programme’s emphasis on advanced construction technologies and management skills will prepare graduates for leadership roles and specialised positions within the Greater Bay Area and beyond. Graduates will also be encouraged to continue their studies in Master’s degree programmes.

The programme covers five broad areas of competence providing a solid foundation for professional training. The subject contents are encapsulated in the following five broad areas of competence.

Human factors in Architecture, including the history and theory of architecture in terms of social and cultural backgrounds with basic psychology classes

Latest advanced technologies relating to architecture, construction, building materials and building services

Communication skills including IT use, BIM, written, oral and drawing presentations
- Professional practice/management skills encompassing basic knowledge of law, management and economics
- Design Studio in the form of problem-based learning (PBL) and integrated studies

The Major subjects comprising 87 credits will be delivered by the School of Design and the departments of the Faculty of Construction and Environment (Department of Architecture, Department of Building Environment and Energy Engineering, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Department of Construction Management and Intelligence and Department of Land Surveying and Geospatial Science)

In addition to the compulsory subjects, the curriculum includes elective subjects to allow students to explore specific topics on buildings and architecture.

General University Requirements (GUR) Subjects
Students are required to take 27 credits of GUR subjects.

Free Electives
Students are required to take 6 credits of Free Electives.

Capstone Project
Students are required to complete a 9-credit Capstone Project.

Work-Integrated Education (WIE)
The WIE component of the programme will last at least four weeks for a full-time placement (equivalent to 22 full days) or 176 hours for a part-time placement. The Department has developed opportunities for students to work in firms or organisations during the summer in Hong Kong or overseas.

Selected Band A applicants will be required to submit a personal portfolio to showcase the ability of the applicants on design, and to attend an aptitude test and/or an interview. These processes are expected to be conducted between January 2027 and June 2027. Applicants who are interested in construction and environment majors and professions, but have yet to decide on their academic and professional pathway at the time of application, may consider choosing the new admission route, “Bachelor’s Degree Scheme in Construction and Environment” (JS3004), as one of their JUPAS choices.
All students admitted to programmes offered by the Faculty of Construction and Environment (including JS3004) will embark on a Common Year One curriculum. Towards the end of Year One, students can decide whether to continue with their initial programme or switch to another programme within the Faculty. Those in the Bachelor’s Degree Scheme (JS3004), as well as those who wish to switch, can choose their preferred programme through a ranking assessment, which considers a combination of their entrance qualification score, Year One GPA, and interview performance.
Students in the Bachelor’s Degree Scheme (JS3004) who wish to join JS3214 after their first year of study will be required to submit a portfolio and attend an aptitude test and/or an interview. This is in addition to the ranking assessment process, mirroring the direct admission requirements for JUPAS applicants to JS3214 stated above (Subject to change).

My Journey in Architectural Studies
Studying Architectural Studies at PolyU has given me invaluable opportunities to participate in real‑world, large‑scale projects both in Hong Kong and internationally. I learned directly from diverse industry professionals and gained practical insights grounded in real design and construction practices. Our studio work ranged from small‑scale creations such as chair design to larger pavilion projects, allowing me to explore how ideas evolve across different scales.
Supported by the department’s excellent platforms for studio learning, I not only sharpened my design skills but also broadened my global perspective. This programme has shaped my understanding of architecture as a bridge connecting art, technology, and daily life. It has fueled my passion for future design exploration and strengthened my clarity about my long-term development within the architecture industry.
Learning Architecture Through Experience
My journey in Architectural Studies at PolyU has been both inspiring and hands-on. Beyond the classroom, PolyU provided me with valuable opportunities to visit design studios and factories in Chinese Mainland, where I gained insight into real-world architectural processes and production techniques. These experiences deepened my understanding of materiality and construction. I also developed practical skills in model-making through projects such as designing a pavilion and a chair, exploring both spatial concepts and human-centered design. Working closely with my groupmates taught me how to communicate ideas effectively, balance perspectives, and collaborate under pressure. These enriching experiences strengthened my passion for architecture.
