Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims

Learning and teaching are our core activities. We are committed to nurturing students’ professional skills and supporting their all-round development.

Students must complete the General University Requirements, core subjects, and fundamental business subjects at an early stage. They will then choose one of the following degrees as a specialism for graduation.

BBA (Hons) in Management

Management skills are essential for all business professionals. As a field of study, management aims to maximise the potential of people and other resources within organisations.

This programme provides students with a well-rounded business education and general management training, as well as the opportunity to specialise in human resource management. Students are equipped with a wide range of management skills to give them the potential to develop as business leaders in Hong Kong, Mainland China, and the region.

BBA (Hons) in Marketing

This programme aims to equip students with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in marketing principles, strategies, and tools necessary for effective marketing management in a dynamic global environment. The incorporation of cutting-edge digital marketing, business analytics, and artificial intelligence and big data for business modules prepares students for the digital transformation in marketing. The experiential learning, internships, and industry project collaborations provide students with hands-on experience to ensure relevance and employability. Graduating students are job-ready for developing their careers in advertising, brand management, market research, sales, digital marketing, and other marketing-related fields.

All students in the Faculty of Business are encouraged to participate in a range of extracurricular activities, such as professional mentorship, student exchange, and other leadership development opportunities.

Work-Integrated Education (WIE)

To graduate, each student must complete 100 hours (3 training credits) of WIE. The Department offers students the opportunity to work in a firm either during the summer holidays or alongside their studies. Summer placements may be offered in Hong Kong, mainland China, or overseas. These work experiences and other forms of professional experience count towards the WIE requirement.

Admission to the Scheme

Students first follow a Common Year One curriculum under the Faculty.

The Scheme gives students approximately one year to identify their area(s) of interest and career aspirations, making it easier for them to choose a Major programme.

The decision to admit a student to a Major programme is made by the Department based on the student’s choice, overall Year One GPA, and individual subject results (i.e., MM2021 Management and Organisation and MM2711 Introduction to Marketing). Students are asked to indicate their Major programme choices during Semester 2 of Year One for the Department’s consideration and approval.

Towards the end of Year One, students can decide whether to continue with their initial choice or switch to another choice within the Faculty. Those who wish to change to another choice need to join a competitive process through a ranking assessment, which considers a combination of entrance qualification score, Year One GPA, and interview performance.

Student Message

I have enjoyed an enriching and transformative learning journey at PolyU, which has equipped me with both academic excellence and real-world readiness. Beyond theoretical learning, PolyU fosters students holistic development, preparing us to thrive in a VUCA world. As a School Ambassador, I developed team spirit and leadership skills by promoting and representing PolyU in several outreach activities, which empowered me to grow professionally and personally. PolyU also offered various learning resources to support our continuous growth. For instance, I attended the Extra-curricular Training Programme (EXCEL), where I honed my technical skills in Photoshop under expert guidance. These competencies significantly boosted my employability and enhanced my workplace performance. Additionally, the INSPIRE Mentoring Programme connected me with industry leaders, providing invaluable career insights and expanding my professional network. Through the Work-Integrated Education (WIE) programme, I gained practical hands-on experience as a human resources intern at the Hospital Authority, deepening my understanding of real-world HR operations. Thanks to PolyU’s nurturing environment, I have grown into an adaptable and skilled graduate, fully prepared to excel in my career.

Lee Ka Wa

My time at PolyU has been fulfilling, offering pathways to develop and explore my passions. The Department of Management and Marketing offered me a platform for diverse experiences.

Through internships, a UK semester exchange, and Fudan University’s International Summer Session in Shanghai, I gained practical skills and global insights, fostering my holistic growth. These experiences taught me to adapt and thrive in a dynamic business environment, inspiring me to seize new challenges proactively.

I am grateful for the opportunities that shaped my university years. The guidance from professors, mentors, and peers was invaluable. Undoubtedly, these experiences taught me resilience to tackle business challenges, leaving me with lasting connections and a clarity of purpose that will guide me going forward.

Fung Sze Wan Sylvia

To engage in retrospection on my wonderful life at PolyU in every semester of the 4 years studying the BBA (Hons) in Management: it gave me not only golden opportunities to learn diverse knowledge via lectures, international exchange events and WIE (Work-Integrated Education), but also cherished memories of supportive friends, tutors and professors in various subjects. All of these contributed to my delightful university life at PolyU and helped me become the best version of myself academically.

Apart from this, PolyU, as well as the Department of Management and Marketing, offers a whole host of chances to connect with off-campus organisations to undertake service learning, and with brilliant alumni who enable students to learn from their success. Through actively participating in the work of a charitable organisation during the service-learning project, I honed my communication skills and explored other peoples different perspectives on the world. These encouraged me to consider things from various standpoints, which can sometimes yield unexpected results. Sharing and exchanging with highly accomplished alumni also provided many great opportunities to familiarise myself with workplaces outside the school and develop my future career paths and prospects.

I am really grateful to have had such experiences at PolyU and to have become part of the Department of Management and Marketing, which has spurred my growth and transformation into an all-rounded person through the process of collaborating with so many talented students and learning from the passionate teaching staff.

Yiu Wang Sing

It has long been a live question: how can we take what we have learnt in our ivory tower and apply it in a world calculated on a timescale of seconds and permeated by artificial intelligence? In theory, a good university student will first make sure they have the right approach to answer a question; a better student, however, will make sure it is the right question being asked. To put it in real-world terms, in a hot stock market, there is always a value in keeping a cool head; in a thrumming labour market, the best alternative might be entrepreneurship. Whilst others are seeking money and titles, you are here to seek exploration and transformation via your learning journey at PolyU.

PolyU indeed teaches us that opportunities are not equally distributed by some higher power. Therefore, I am the one who acts like a walking question mark in class, who rapidly challenges my classmates with journals, thesis papers and business reviews. This flipped-classroom approach to learning takes our thinking skills to new levels, refining our mindset to cope with complexity, and I am sure you can find others like me in your peer group.

I would like to extend my wholehearted gratitude to PolyU for shaping every student into a problem-miner and solver, not to sit speechless on a comfortable chesterfield, but to be an employee who can inspire their employers, one who has the confidence to speak first in a room full of MBA candidates, and a person chasing one milestone after another in their life journey. Pursuing legal studies after graduation, I have found "FOCUSED Dice" an ever-reliable aid to logical reasoning.

Tong Lok Yin

Reflecting on my graduation from PolyU with a BBA (Hons) in Management, I am grateful for the exceptional education and personal growth opportunities I received from this institution. PolyU not only equipped me with essential academic knowledge but also provided me with practical skills and valuable life lessons.

I found the Work-Integrated Education (WIE) programme particularly beneficial as it provided me with invaluable work-based learning experiences that were highly relevant to my future professional development. During my WIE as an Administrative Assistant at BodyVStore Limited, I gained practical experiences that gave me a competitive edge in the job market and prepared me well for the challenges of a real work environment.

PolyU’s nurturing environment, together with its passionate professors, made my university life truly fulfilling. I’m proud to be part of the MM family, where I have found a strong sense of belonging and support. I’m excited to be able to apply the lessons and memories from PolyU in the next chapter of my life; I am ready to take on any challenges that the future holds for me.

CHAN Wing Lam

PolyU offers valuable support and opportunities to foster our whole-person development. The knowledge I gained at PolyU continues to help me in my career and personal development to this day.

For example, PolyU’s mandatory Work-Integrated Education programme encourages students to gain hands-on work experience and prepare for their careers before graduation. During my university years, I participated in several internships at financial institutions, including CICC, Standard Chartered Bank, and Ernst & Young. These internships not only equipped me with practical business experience but also gave me the opportunity to develop a professional network to become a more competitive graduate. In addition to the Work-Integrated Education programme, students are invited to participate in the Mentorship Programme and Career Development Workshops. These activities gave me insights into contemporary business practices and provided me with constructive, tailored feedback on my personal development.

In addition to career development, PolyU encourages students to care about our society. There is a compulsory service-learning course to strengthen connections between students and the community. By participating in the Vision Screening Service Project, I realised that some people do not have access to eye care or other social services and are unable to get timely treatment or assistance. I also joined the Youth Development Network of the Hong Kong Government to further exchange views with the public and improve community relations. Thanks to these learning experiences, I am confident in my ability to overcome challenges in the workplace and make valuable contributions to the community.

WAI Pak Hei Alex

My four years of study in the BBA in Management at PolyU was a fruitful journey. I am glad I chose this programme because it gave me the opportunity to explore the business world and become a well-rounded person.

This major equipped me with a comprehensive understanding of the strategies and practical skills needed to be a good leader, and prepared me well to become a future leader in the workplace. PolyU encourages all students to participate in activities and acquire skills through work experience. For example, the Work-Integrated Education programme enabled me to work as an intern in a real business to apply the knowledge and skills I learnt in class. Moreover, PolyU’s outbound exchange programme allows students to explore the world. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to study in Denmark in the second semester of 2021/22, which broadened my horizons. I made friends from diverse backgrounds, learnt about different cultures, and communicated with people from different countries. I never imagined I would experience the lifestyle and education of a European country. It was a wonderful opportunity to explore the world and develop my global vision.

I had an amazing learning experience and university life at PolyU, and I am glad to be part of the Management and Marketing family. My Major programme developed my abilities and knowledge, which will help me overcome different challenges in the future.

WU WU Li Wen Yohana

PolyU gave me a wide range of resources and opportunities to support and improve my growth and learning abilities. For example, I learnt how to properly use the PolyU Library databases and took part in various workshops (e.g., library workshops, career talks, innovation and entrepreneurship workshops) and seminars.

Furthermore, I was motivated to build my network and learn from people from different backgrounds by joining various clubs and societies at the University. For example, I joined the PolyU Student Ambassador Scheme to help parents and secondary school students learn about different majors and university life, and the Work-Integrated Education Representative Scheme to introduce various work opportunities to PolyU students. I gained valuable experience helping students plan their future careers and studies and had the chance to meet and learn from different people.

Thanks to a recommendation from the Faculty of Business, I also secured a valuable internship in a programme co-sponsored by Google and Social Career, a non-profit organisation (NGO), which provides NGOs with digital marketing plans using Google services. In the future, I will continue to grow and engage in lifelong learning to succeed.
