Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims

Learning and teaching are our core activities. We are committed to nurturing students’ professional skills and supporting their all-round development.

Students must complete the General University Requirements, core subjects, and fundamental business subjects at an early stage. They will then choose one of the following degrees as a specialism for graduation.

BBA (Hons) in Management

Management skills are essential for all business professionals. As a field of study, management aims to maximise the potential of people and other resources within organisations.

This programme provides students with a well-rounded business education and general management training, as well as the opportunity to specialise in human resource management. Students are equipped with a wide range of management skills to give them the potential to develop as business leaders in Hong Kong, Mainland China, and the region.

BBA (Hons) in Marketing

This programme aims to equip students with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in marketing principles, strategies, and tools necessary for effective marketing management in a dynamic global environment. The incorporation of cutting-edge digital marketing, business analytics, and artificial intelligence and big data for business modules prepares students for the digital transformation in marketing. The experiential learning, internships, and industry project collaborations provide students with hands-on experience to ensure relevance and employability. Graduating students are job-ready for developing their careers in advertising, brand management, market research, sales, digital marketing, and other marketing-related fields.

All students in the Faculty of Business are encouraged to participate in a range of extracurricular activities, such as professional mentorship, student exchange, and other leadership development opportunities.

Work-Integrated Education (WIE)

To graduate, each student must complete 100 hours (3 training credits) of WIE. The Department offers students the opportunity to work in a firm either during the summer holidays or alongside their studies. Summer placements may be offered in Hong Kong, mainland China, or overseas. These work experiences and other forms of professional experience count towards the WIE requirement.

Admission to the Scheme

Students first follow a Common Year One curriculum under the Faculty.

The Scheme gives students approximately one year to identify their area(s) of interest and career aspirations, making it easier for them to choose a Major programme.

The decision to admit a student to a Major programme is made by the Department based on the student’s choice, overall Year One GPA, and individual subject results (i.e., MM2021 Management and Organisation and MM2711 Introduction to Marketing). Students are asked to indicate their Major programme choices during Semester 2 of Year One for the Department’s consideration and approval.

Towards the end of Year One, students can decide whether to continue with their initial choice or switch to another choice within the Faculty. Those who wish to change to another choice need to join a competitive process through a ranking assessment, which considers a combination of entrance qualification score, Year One GPA, and interview performance.

Student Message

The PolyU BBA program was a rich tapestry of academics, hands-on experiences, and dynamics. I attended well-rounded lectures and courses ranging from economics, finance, business management, and human resource management, and furthered my intellectual curiosity in applied mathematics. Additionally, I participated in the LSE summer school throughout my university life, which provided me with extra exposure, expanded my network, and allowed me to pursue new academic fields while representing PolyU and communicating with university students around the world.

Beyond academics, the service learning program was memorable. I proposed and served as a community volunteer for English-speaking young adults with special educational needs (SENs), an experience that was both rewarding and eye-opening. Additionally, the international colloquium class held in the summer, in joint collaboration with Dongguan University of Science and Technology, provided exposure to new classes and people, creating another cherished memory. The dynamics and confluence of extracurricular activities (ECAs) at PolyU were wonderfully nurtured, leaving me with lasting memories and connections. I was actively involved in various activities and societies, including serving as Vice President for the Advanced Competition Club where I invited industrial professionals to hold real-life business case-cracking workshop sessions for members, General Secretary for the International Students Association where our team culminated into an international gala night where I appreciated the diverse culture of PolyU, Human Resources & PR Manager for the PolyU Business Club where I networked with real-life alumni who are now business professionals, and Global Student Ambassador for PolyU Info Day to further guide prospective PolyU students and international school teachers. These roles allowed me to mingle with both local and international friends, broadening my horizons and making invaluable connections through organizing different student activities and supporting faculty events. These experiences left me with many endearing memories and connections that will linger even beyond my university days.

Given the strong foundation provided by my background at PolyU, I had the opportunity to work in diverse fields such as venture capital, private equity, digital assets, material trading & sourcing, and business secretarial companies. In these roles, I developed a versatile skill set, picking up different subject matter expertise in an agile and adaptable manner. Although the last four years of adapting to Hong Kong as an expat was challenging at times, the amazing people I met along the way inspired me in their own ways. I am truly grateful to be a graduate of PolyU, which laid a great foundation for me to study and live in Hong Kong, and provided a platform to kickstart my career on an international podium!

Pyo So Yeon

Reflecting on my four-year study life at PolyU, the experience is uniquely transformative chapter of growth.

PolyU has equipped me with a solid foundation in management studies. The diverse learning environment also fostered my holistic growth. The BBA program has given me a comprehensive understanding of management science through courses such as statistics, accounting, economics, business analytics and management theories etc. Experiences of collaborating with exchange students from prestigious institutions like Southeast University (China), IE Business School (Spain), and KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden) on group projects was particularly enriching. Therefore, PolyU not only prepares students to excel in the field of management but also cultivates globally minded professionals.

I believe PolyU and our Faculty of Business are continuously evolving, solidifying their position among the world’s top-tier business schools. I am proud to have been part of this community.

Xue Jianke

On my first day at PolyU, going on exchange to Europe was always on my bucket list during my university years. I am incredibly grateful for this exchange experience as it continually pushed me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to embrace many “first times doing…”

During my four-month exchange programme, I had the opportunity to explore 16 cities in 11 European countries. This journey taught me invaluable lessons that cannot be found in textbooks. While traveling to unfamiliar countries with language barriers, I encountered unexpected situations, continually testing my ability to handle emergencies. These experiences have equipped me with a resilient mindset and problem-solving skills, allowing me to embrace life’s uncertainties.

Participating in the exchange programme was an extraordinary highlight of my university journey. It opened the door to the wondrous world I longed to explore, instilling in me the courage to pursue endeavours that truly ignite my passion. Reading this quote at the airport upon my return to Hong Kong, I found it perfectly summed up the conclusion of my exchange life: “Never feel satisfied with the same old places and routine. Discover new colors of the earth”.

LIU Li Fang

I am deeply grateful for my enriching experiences at PolyU. The dedicated professors demonstrated exceptional teaching skills and professionalism, which greatly enhanced my knowledge of business and marketing. Moreover, PolyU offers various meaningful and interesting societies. For example, I joined the Cangwu Literature Society as President, which honed my management and leadership skills and forged lasting friendships with like-minded individuals.

In addition, PolyU provided invaluable learning resources, allowing me to participate in online courses, summer schools, and exchange programmes at Cornell University, Peking University, Beijing Normal University, and Fudan University. These experiences have broadened my horizons and enriched my personal growth. Furthermore, the University’s career planning guidance helped me establish my career goals, and my internship experience in Jinan enabled me to apply my knowledge and explore further learning opportunities.

I would like to warmly thank the MM Department for fostering my development, and I greatly appreciate PolyU’s commitment to holistic education and comprehensive training. This invaluable experience will serve as a solid foundation for the next chapter of my life.

HUA Yingkai Stella

I believe that in life, the best teacher to learn from is hands-on experience. During my 4 years in the PolyU Management programme, I have participated in many activities that have let me step out of my comfort zone and taught me essential things in life. There are numerous opportunities to choose from, allowing you to explore your interests in different industries, ranging from overseas volunteering to competitions to funding for student-initiated projects that allow students to develop, execute, and evaluate year-long independent research.

In my first year at PolyU, I went on a 2-week service trip to Cambodia to help build solar panel stations for the local villages there. This was a heartwarming experience that led me and my friends to initiate a student-initiated project, funded by the PolyU International Affairs Office, to run campaigns and seminars at PolyU and in Canada in my second year. I was also chosen to represent PolyU at a fully funded international conference, the University Scholars Leadership Symposium held by the Department of Humanitarian Affairs in the United Nations Bangkok. In my third year, I participated in an academic student exchange programme at one of the best business schools in the world, Copenhagen Business School, which allowed me to broaden my horizons and explore the Danish culture and education system, which is one of the best in the world. I also participated in the annual Dale Carnegie x Faculty of Business Competition, at which we had to come up with a concrete business plan and present it in front of the judges. This was an amazing experience that honed our public speaking, critical thinking and leadership skills. This will be useful for my future career path. I was recognised as one of the Best Presenters, and as a reward received professional training from Dale Carnegie Training and a fully-funded study trip to London and Bristol.

I am very thankful every time I look back and realise how much PolyU offered me - more than just a degree and academic learning. The experiences that I had at PolyU allowed me to do so much that I didn't know I was capable of, and helped me to become the person I am today, ready to face all upcoming challenges. I highly recommend that fellow international and local students try it themselves. Thank you for the 4 amazing years, PolyU!

Hillary Susanto

Throughout my life, I have aspired to become a leader. Here at PolyU, interacting and networking with individuals from various backgrounds and cultures have become my lifestyle, and the Faculty of Business has fully supported my academic, professional and entrepreneurial aspirations.

It is difficult to say exactly which experience was the most meaningful and impactful for my personal development - an exchange to Spain, acting as a president of the Entrepreneurship Society, meeting my dearest friends and family here, or participating in student competitions, hackathons and case studies. Surprisingly, at the end of these miraculous four years, I have found that I have developed PolyU's own values - collaboration, innovation and courage in everything I do.

Thanks to PolyU, I have come ever closer to my dream of becoming a person who never stops learning and never stops contributing to society. I am beyond grateful to the University and, in particular, to our supportive and welcoming faculty, who have made living in Hong Kong as a foreigner so effortless and warm.

Ainur Kubasheva

The BBA(Hons) in Management emphasises the development of both professional knowledge and practical skills, enabling us to widen our global outlook and gain extensive exposure to various business perspectives over four years. Students can participate in sharing sessions and competitions run by well-known organisations and guest speakers, such as the global leadership programme co-hosted with Dale Carnegie Training. I couldn’t be more grateful for the training session offered by Dale Carnegie, which taught me to turn ideas into solutions through teamwork and improve my pitching skills. Besides, the diverse culture and competitive academic environment of Hong Kong allowed me to step out of my comfort zone, and most importantly to learn and grow with my peers. PolyU also provides many internship, exchange study and social service experiences, giving us hands-on experience in our fields of choice. Supported by the Faculty and PolyU, I was able to pursue exchange studies in Sweden. This not only broadened my knowledge but also introduced me to different ways of thinking. The whole experience prepared me well for my future career, as Hong Kong taught me always to be optimistic and proactive. Thank you for my rewarding university life!

Chong Ai Ning, Irene

Of all of my experiences, in Malaysia, Hong Kong and all over the world, my time at PolyU has been one of the most valuable. PolyU nurtures talent and promotes balanced development in all areas. You will never run out of activities, programmes or workshops to upgrade your skills and help you remain abreast of developments in the market.

My major is the BBA(Hons) in Management. The programme has equipped me with industry-relevant knowledge that has landed me two internships in multinational companies over the last four years. The curriculum is also designed to maximise students’ exposure to society. I have had the opportunity to join an international student exchange programme in Germany, volunteer in rural China and connect with industry experts through the Professional Mentorship Program (PMP). As a seasonal athlete, I have also served on the PolyU sports team, giving me fascinating insights into the competitive sports environment of Hong Kong.

I have met people from all around the world and experienced Hong Kong the “local” way, with help from local Hong Kong students. This was an exciting cultural-exchange experience. Without the support, encouragement and help I received from my peers and the university staff, none of my achievements would have been possible. I am grateful to PolyU, and I am ready for the next milestone ahead.

PolyU, my thanks are just for you.

Lim Yin Yin, Rabbit

My experience at PolyU was truly fruitful, with great classmates from different cultural backgrounds. With warm encouragement and support from our professors, I became more confident in challenging myself, gaining not only practical knowledge but also a mindset conducive to learning. The BBA(Hons) in Management programme was challenging but rewarding, allowing me to strive for continuous personal development as well as academic excellence. I had the invaluable opportunity to join an internship programme in Moscow and study in Denmark, thanks to the support of the School and Department. This broadened my horizons and equipped me with multiple perspectives. My achievements exceeded my expectations. I always felt that our professors were willing to help and support us. I sincerely thank the knowledgeable professors and lecturers for guiding us to achieve academic excellence and prepare for our future careers.
