Aims and Characteristics

Master of Science in Mathematics for Artificial Intelligence Technology (數智科技理學碩士學位)

Programme Aims

Mathematics is fundamental to AI technology providing the essential foundation for key areas such as optimization, probability, statistics, and linear algebra —key to robust and interpretable systems in finance, scientific computing, biomedical analysis, and risk modelling. Therefore, a strong mathematical background is indispensable for effective AI development.

Launched in September 2025, this Master’s programme is the first in Hong Kong to integrate mathematics and AI. It equips students with both theoretical knowledge and practical expertise, supporting the city’s ambition to become a premier digital hub and smart city.

Characteristics

As AI technologies are increasingly integrated across diverse sectors, a solid foundation in mathematics has become indispensable. Unlike other taught postgraduate programmes offered by sister institutions in Hong Kong, which primarily focus on the application aspects of AI and Big Data, this programme uniquely combines rigorous mathematical foundations with practical, cutting-edge AI applications. This balanced approach ensures that graduates acquire both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for a successful career in AI. The interdisciplinary nature of the programme empowers graduates to apply their expertise across a wide range of contexts and industries.
