To recognise the achievement of research postgraduate (RPg) alumni and promote the excellence of research postgraduate education at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), the Graduate School organises the Outstanding Research Postgraduate Alumni Award annually.

Selection Criteria

A panel of judges, comprising both internal and external members, will be formed to examine the nominations and assess candidates’ qualifications and performance for the awards. The selection criteria include:

  • Accomplishments, reputation and commitment in the academia/ profession/ industry
  • Leadership, innovation and impact
  • Recognition and awards
  • Support and contribution to PolyU

Professor WANG Danyang is a Professor in the School of Materials Science and Engineering at The University of New South Wales Sydney (UNSW Sydney). He began his academic journey at PolyU and obtained his MPhil and PhD from the Department of Physics and Materials Science (PM) in 2002 and 2006 respectively, under the supervision of Professors  CHOY Chung-Loong and CHAN Helen Lai-Wa. His research focuses on advanced electronic materials and functional oxides for next-generation electronic devices, sustainable energy technologies, and high-resolution medical imaging systems.

Professor WANG has established an internationally recognised research profile and has been listed among the World's Top 2% Most-Cited Scientists by Stanford University in consecutive years, reflecting the global impact of his research. He was awarded an Australian Research Council Future Fellowship in 2018, one of Australia's most prestigious competitive research fellowships, and has led multiple major nationally competitive and industry-funded research programmes. Beyond research excellence, he is committed to training the next generation of researchers, having supervised more than 40 higher degree research students and numerous postdoctoral fellows, many of whom have progressed to successful careers in academia, research organisations, and industry.

Since graduating from PolyU, Professor WANG has maintained close ties with his alma mater through research collaborations, joint student supervision, guest lectures, academic reviews, and programme development activities, contributing to long-standing research and education partnerships between PolyU and UNSW Sydney.

Dr Maxwell Fordjour ANTWI-AFARI is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) at the Department of Civil and Logistics Engineering, Aston University, United Kingdom. He obtained his BSc in Construction Technology and Management (First Class Honours) and MPhil in Building Technology at the Department of Building Technology, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana. He received his PhD at the Department of Construction Management and Intelligence (CMI) under the supervision of Professor LI Heng, Professor Arnold WONG Yu-Lok, and Professor SEO JoonOh, and subsequently worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at PolyU.

Dr ANTWI-AFARI has teaching and research interests in Construction Management and Engineering, Construction Health and Safety, Construction Ergonomics, Digital Technologies and Innovations, and Biomechanical Analysis. He has published more than 180 papers, with over 6,500 citations and an H-index of 45 on Google Scholar. He has successfully received funded research grants from the Royal Society, UK Research and Innovation, Construction Industry Council, Aston University, PolyU, and other grants in China. He has delivered many guest lectures, seminars, and public speeches in industry and academia.

He serves as a reviewer for more than 100 peer-reviewed journals, and a member of editorial boards, associate editor, and guest editor for many journals. He is recognised by the Stanford University-Elsevier Top 2% Scientists list for 2025. Dr Antwi-Afari has received numerous outstanding recognitions such as 2017 Gibrine Adam Promising Young Scholar Award, 2017/18 Grand Winner of Occupational Safety and Health Best Project Award, 2021 Best Newcomer for Aston Achievement Awards, 2025 IEA/Kingfar Early Career Research Award, and 2026 Research/Dissertation Supervisor Award. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a Member of the Hong Kong Ergonomics Society, and an Associate Member of American Society of Civil Engineers.
