Outstanding Alumni Award of PolyU Department of Applied Mathematics (OPAA)

outstanding-polyu-alumni-award-2024 1275x165 The Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award (OPAA) aims to give recognition to distinguished graduates of PolyU for great distinction in their chosen fields, active support to their alma mater, as well as impactful contributions to the wider community. 

Since 2022, achievement categories have been established to celebrate considerable accomplishments of our alumni in specific areas, including professional achievemententrepreneurial achievementscholarly achievement, and community service achievement. Recognition is now also given to outstanding young alumniThe Award is organised at three levels to promote championship of recognition and engagement of alumni at Department, Faculty/School and University levels.

Nominations for Outstanding Alumni Award of PolyU Department of Applied Mathematics are now invited for submission. Details are as follows:

Nomination and Selection

  • Call for nomination starts from 18 March 2024
  • Nomination Form returns by 5 April 2024
  • Result for Department Award will be announced in late May 2024.

Recipients of Department Awards would be nominated to the Outstanding Alumni Award of PolyU at Faculty Level and University Level. For details, please visit OPAA website.

Eligibility

The nominated candidate must be graduate who has successfully completed full-time or part-time programme offered by PolyU (or its forerunners: Hong Kong Government Trade School, Hong Kong Technical College, and Hong Kong Polytechnic) which led to academic award accredited by the respective Institution.

The proposer can be PolyU graduate, Honorary Graduate, University Fellow, PolyU staff, current PolyU Council and Court member and current Advisory Committee member.  There is no limit to the number of nominations to be submitted by each proposer.  However, the proposer cannot be the candidate himself/ herself or a direct relative of the candidate.

Award Categories and Selection Criteria

In addition to honouring distinguished graduates for their distinction in their chosen fields, the Award recognises the alumni’s active support to their alma mater.  Support and Contribution to PolyU is one of the key selection criteria at all levels.

Four specific areas of achievement would be given recognition, they include Professional Achievement, Entrepreneurial Achievement, Scholarly Achievement and Community Service Achievement.

Alumni who are aged at/under 40 would be eligible for the Outstanding Young Alumni Award.

Award Category

Description

Professional Achievement This category recognises alumni who have attained distinguished achievements, demonstrated exemplary leadership and made a strong impact on their profession/industry/society.
Entrepreneurial Achievement This category recognises alumni who have demonstrated outstanding innovation and entrepreneurship, as well as founded or advanced business or technology ventures with impact.
Scholarly Achievement This category recognises alumni scholars who have made notable scholarly or research contributions in their disciplines, with proven track record and excellent reputation in the field.
Community Service Achievement This category recognises alumni who have made impactful contributions to the communities, or demonstrated an extraordinary level of commitment, volunteerism and/or philanthropy for promoting the wellbeing of the communities.
Selection Committee

Selection Committee will examine the nominations and assess candidates’ qualifications and performance for the awards. 

Confidentiality

All information submitted on this nomination form will be kept strictly confidential and will only be used by the Selection Committee for the purpose of the selection process.  The candidate will not be contacted by the Department of Applied Mathematics until he/she is selected as the awardee of the Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award.

Alumni Association of Applied Mathematics

Since its establishment in 1979, the Alumni Association of Applied Mathematics has upheld its mission of acting as a bridge between the graduates, students and staff of the Department of Applied Mathematics as well as keeping them up to date with what is happening at their alma mater.

Objectives

  • To organize academic activities relevant to the interest of the members of the Association.
  • To promote the cultural interests and general welfare of the members of the Association.
  • To issue bulletins, magazines, circulars and other materials relevant to the interest of the members of the Association.

Associate Members  Any person whose profession is closely related to the field of applied mathematics is eligible for associate membership provided that the application is recommended by two Full Members and approved by the Executive Committee.

Honorary Members

All staff of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University concerned in the teaching of applied mathematics and those who have contributed to the Association may be invited by the Association to become Honorary Member. Honorary Member shall automatically be Life Member of the Association.
