All PolyU’s undergraduate programmes include a mandatory Work-integrated Education (WIE) component. Students are expected to take internship that are related to their academic studies e.g. investment, finance, data analysis, programming, etc., preferably during summer break for at least 120 hours. Through the internship, students would gain hands-on working experience and receive on-the-job training which will enhance their professional competence, the ability of independent thinking, effective communication skills and develop a global outlook.

Pre-Approval of Self-sourced Internship

PolyU has arranged a “Top-up Group Personal Accident (GPA) Insurance Policy for WIE” aiming to provide additional protection for students participating in Work-Integrated Education (WIE). This policy covers all students for bodily injury caused by accidents during the WIE period, and applies to both local and non-local internships that are organized, arranged, endorsed, recognized, or approved by the University.

Please note that self-sourced internships without pre-approval will not be recognized or approved as WIE, and therefore will not be covered by the GPA insurance policy. This is to ensure proper protection for all students.

Mandatory Pre-WIE Training

Effective from 14 November 2025, all PolyU students are required to complete the Pre-WIE training—either in person or online via Blackboard—prior to undertaking any internship. Approval for internships will NOT be granted to students who have not completed the Pre-WIE training. For further details, please refer to the Study Guide provided by GEO.

Exemptions apply to students who:

  • Commence their internship before 14 November 2025; or
  • Have already obtained pre-WIE endorsement from their academic department before 14 November 2025.
