Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims

The programme aims to provide a unique educational opportunity for top-performing undergraduate students to grapple with global challenges through interdisciplinary studies. It is designed to inspire students to adopt an innovative, interest-driven and engaging approach to their academic journey, offering flexible learning pathways and curriculum options, personalised coaching, in-depth mentorship, and guaranteed outside-classroom and non-local learning opportunities, enabling them to excel in their academic pursuits.

Characteristics

This university scheme allows students to pursue their academic interests and passions. Unlike traditional programmes, it offers students the flexibility to design their own Major within a structured interdisciplinary curriculum framework. This approach encourages interdisciplinary learning while fostering ownership of learning, creativity and scholarship among students.

Student Message

I chose Hospitality Management and Psychology as my major areas of study because this academic path allowed me to go beyond the limits of a single discipline and become more competitive. By combining these two fields, I could gain a deeper understanding of consumer behaviour and human needs - knowledge that is essential for creating meaningful service experiences.

I also felt truly supported by this programme. My Personal Academic Mentor was Professor Kaye Chon, a leading scholar and Dean of the SHTM. He often shared his valuable life experiences with me, and recommended a wide range of activities that enriched my learning journey. His guidance has helped me grow both academically and personally, and has strengthened my confidence in the direction I’ve chosen.

Lyra Hou, Study Focus: Hospitality Management + Psychology

Learning Sciences is what I want to study, it’s about learning how to learn. PolyU’s interdisciplinary major offers great flexibility and one-to-one academic guidance, allowing me to explore this field in depth. My Personal Academic Mentor, Professor Daniel Shek, has provided invaluable guidance on both academic interests and career aspirations. In addition, this programme provides rich resources and opportunities, including scholarships, hall residence during the first two years, a four-tier academic advising system, and valuable chances to engage with university leaders.
