Programme Aims


The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)/Bachelor of Science (Honours) Scheme in Information and Artificial Intelligence Engineering consists of the following programmes. Students admitted to the Scheme study together during the first year and then complete their preferred programme, normally within three years. Under this arrangement, students can make their choice after they have obtained a better understanding of the programmes.

 

  • BEng (Hons) in Electronic Systems and Internet-of-Things

    Electronic Systems and Internet-of-Things (IoT) are among the key technologies that play important roles in modern-day living. Various sectors, including business, commerce, communication, education, entertainment, healthcare and transportation, require Electronic Systems and IoT for efficient operation.  The programme aims to develop graduates with a wide range of professional knowledge and skills relevant to Electronic Systems and Internet-of-Things (IoT). The programme covers leading-edge technologies in electronic engineering, with a focus on IoT and related applications. These include artificial intelligence of things, robotics, sensor technologies, electronic devices and their associated software to sense, measure, interpret, connect and analyse data.
     

  • BSc (Hons) in Artificial Intelligence and Information Engineering

    With the rapid expansion and dissemination of information and smart communication technologies in daily life, professionals in the areas of information engineering and artificial intelligence are in great demand. This programme aims at developing graduates into artificial intelligence specialists and professionals in information engineering. The programme covers technological innovations in artificial intelligence and information engineering, focusing on machine perception and data science, as well as applications related to information engineering, such as computer vision, healthcare technology, bioinformatics, natural language processing and automatics and robotics.
     

  • BSc (Hons) in Information Security

    Recent advances in information and communication technologies (ICT) have brought people great convenience in their daily lives. Information has become one of the most valuable assets for every country and business and it requires careful protection. Protecting data security and privacy and safeguarding against the risk of potentially devastating security attacks and misuses have thus become a vital concern to all countries and organisations. This programme aims to produce graduates with a wide range of professional knowledge and skills relevant to information security, including but not limited to computer, network, wireless, mobile, database, web, IoT security, audit and compliance. The programme covers both large-scale and small-scale security issues and provides the necessary training to students. 

 

Programme Characteristics

  • The BEng (Hons) in Electronic Systems and Internet-of-Things emphasises both theory and application. In the latter part of Year Three, students can use the knowledge that they have acquired to conduct an IoT project. In the Final Year, students can focus on selected areas by choosing relevant electives and completing a Capstone Project.
        
  • The BSc (Hons) in Artificial Intelligence and Information Engineering offers an effective mix of basic theory, hands-on practice and application. In the latter part of Year Three, students use the knowledge that they have acquired to conduct an artificial intelligence-based Integrated Project. They can focus on their selected areas by choosing relevant electives. In their Final Year, students must complete a Capstone Project.
         
  • The BSc (Hons) in Information Security offers a good mix of basic theory, hands-on practice and application. In the latter part of Year Three, students can use the knowledge that they have acquired to conduct an integrated project. During the summer of Year Three, students have the opportunity to join an internship programme. In the Final Year, students can focus on selected areas by choosing relevant electives.


Students can gain workplace training opportunities within and outside Hong Kong through Work-Integrated Education (WIE).

 

Students can also participate in the exchange programme and spend a semester at an overseas university. The exchange programme offers excellent opportunities for students to study abroad, broaden their horizons and develop an appreciation of the cultures of other countries. 

 

Engineering and Entrepreneurship Club (E&E Club) provides a platform to enhance students’ interests in engineering and understanding of entrepreneurship. E&E Club organises workshops to train students’ technical skills and invites experts to share about the requirements of entrepreneurship with students. It further supports students' participation in both local and overseas underwater robot competitions. 

 

Seminars, industry visits and overseas study tours are also organised to broaden the students’ horizons.

 

*All admitted students will embark on a Common Year One curriculum. Towards the end of year one, students can decide whether to continue with their initial choice or switch to another choice within the Faculty of Engineering. Those who wish to change to another choice need to join a competitive process through a ranking assessment, which considers a combination of entrance qualification score, Year One GPA, and interview performance.

Professional Recognition

 

The BEng (Hons) in Electronic Systems and Internet-of-Things and BSc (Hons) in Information Security programmes have been granted full accreditation by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). Provisional accreditation has been granted by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) for the BSc (Hons) in Artificial Intelligence and Information Engineering.

 

Career Prospects

 

  • BEng (Hons) in Electronic Systems and Internet-of-Things

    The Internet of Things (IoT) is a fast-developing field throughout the world. According to Fortune Business Insights, the global IoT market was valued at US$190 billion in 2018 and is projected to reach US$1,102.6 billion by 2026. However, Immersat Research finds that around 47% of organisations surveyed do not possess sufficient IoT skills and are outsourcing such work. Gartner Research predicts that around 75% of IoT projects may take twice as long as they should because of the shortage of IoT talent. In 2020, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region published the Hong Kong Smart City Blueprint 2.0, in which the Government put forward over 130 initiatives, many of them related to IoT. This programme aims at training IoT professionals who will meet Hong Kong’s pressing labour force needs in the emerging IoT area. Students will acquire the necessary professional skills to contribute to IoT development in Hong Kong and overseas by participating in various IoT projects in both public sectors and private companies.
         

  • BSc (Hons) in Artificial Intelligence and Information Engineering

    Information engineering encompasses vital technologies that support worldwide economic growth. With the increasing popularity of and technological advances in artificial intelligence, products and services with intelligent features are in great demand, and new models and apps are being developed every day. Upon graduation, students will possess sufficient knowledge to commence careers in the following areas:

     

    • Smart mobile communications services – e.g., network engineer, telecommunication engineer.

    • Software / Mobile apps developments – e.g., software engineer, mobile app developer.

    • Internet-related business via the use of cloud technologies and data analytics – e.g., data scientist and engineer, intelligence system engineer.

    • Data centres – big-data developer, cloud engineer.

    • AI-related applications and development – e.g., AI specialist, machine-learning engineer.
           

  • BSc (Hons) in Information Security

    The field of ICT offers enormous opportunities in Hong Kong and worldwide, particularly in information security. Corporations recruit ICT professionals to support their businesses by deploying new technologies. Further transition towards a knowledge society and the shifting of the ICT sector toward cloud computing and mobile communications will require ICT employees to acquire new skills and knowledge, particularly in the area of information security.

     

    Several recent employment surveys conducted in Hong Kong and worldwide indicate the need for manpower in information security. For example, the 2019 Robert Half Salary Guide shows that chief information officers found it challenging to find qualified IT staff in IT security, software/application development and data/database management. Many qualified technology professionals in Hong Kong are receiving multiple offers, as IT job opportunities are on the rise, partly because of the growth of mainland Chinese companies investing in and expanding into Hong Kong. The “Hong Kong Technology Salary Guide 2019” conducted by Robert Walters, finds that demand is high for specialists in infrastructure and cyber security, as companies need to review security policy and respond to the growing threat of cybercrime. Salary increments of more than 30% can be expected for technology job seekers with niche/scarce skill sets related to information security. In summary, graduates from the information security discipline can expect very promising career prospects both locally and globally.

Curriculum
  • In Year One, all students will embark on a Common Year One curriculum within the Faculty of Engineering. 

     

BEng (Hons) in Electronic Systems and Internet-of-Things

  • Year Two: Basic Circuit Analysis and Electronics, Fundamentals of Machine Intelligence, Introduction to Internet of Things, Logic Design, Linear Systems, Mathematics and Industrial Centre Training.
  • Year Three: Communication Fundamentals, Computer System Fundamentals, Data and Computer Communications, Database System, Dynamic Electronic Systems, Microcontroller Systems and Interface, IoT Workshop & Project, Wireless and Mobile Systems, Multidisciplinary Manufacturing Project and Technical Elective subjects.
  • Year Four: Engineering Management, IoT Security, Service-Learning, Professional Communication subject, Professionals in Society, Capstone Project and technical elective subjects.
  • To graduate from the programme, students must complete the Work-Integrated Education requirement, i.e., two weeks of full-time employment within the study period.

     

BSc (Hons) in Artificial Intelligence and Information Engineering

  • The curriculum in the second, third and fourth years covers fundamental and advanced knowledge and applications of artificial intelligence and information engineering.
  • Core subjects cover the theories and applications of computers, data science, artificial intelligence, mobile systems, programming, data and computer communications, databases, intelligent technologies, IP networks, web systems and technologies, together with an integrated project and a Capstone Project.
  • To graduate from the programme, students must complete the Work-Integrated Education requirement, i.e., two weeks of full-time employment within the study period.

     

BSc (Hons) in Information Security

  • Year Two: Applied Cryptography, Data Structures and Algorithms, Database System, Digital and Computer System, Discrete Mathematics, Data and Computer Communication, Operating Systems and Foundation Techniques in Artificial Intelligence.
     
  • Year Three: Computer Systems Principles and Security, Database Security, Computer System Security, Integrated Project, Legal Aspects and Ethics of Computing, Network Security, Professionals in Society, Professional Communication subject, System Programming, Web Systems and Technologies, and Technical Elective subjects.
     
  • Year Four: Engineering Management, Service and Cloud Computing, Service-Learning, Wireless and Mobile Systems, Capstone Project and Technical Elective subjects.
     
  • To graduate from the programme, students must complete the Summer Internship and Work-Integrated Education requirement, i.e., four weeks of full-time employment within the study period.

Secondary Major Details

The option of Secondary Major in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics (AIDA) is available to the students of the BEng (Hons) in Electronic Systems and Internet-of-Things (ESIoT):

 

Features

Artificial intelligence and data analytics are the prevalent technologies across various disciplines and have become a standard approach to enriching business, advancing technology and achieving breakthroughs in virtually all fields. The Department is fully aware of the opportunities and challenges brought about by the new economy and believes that it is indispensable for the next generation of the workforce to possess expertise in AIDA and IoT, which is a fast-developing field throughout the world and for which Hong Kong has a pressing need for workers, as encapsulated in the Hong Kong Smart City Blueprint 2.0 published by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

 

The curriculum of BEng (Hons) in ESIoT aims to develop students’ fundamental discipline-specific knowledge in IoT and generic competencies in a professional context. These include artificial intelligence of things, robotics, sensor technologies, electronic devices and their associated software to sense, measure, interpret, connect and analyse data. Foundation computer science and statistics subjects will provide the basis for the study of AI. Students will take upper-level AI subjects designed in the Secondary Major to enable them to integrate AIDA skills into the study of BEng (Hons) in ESIoT. 

 

A key feature of this Secondary Major is the Integrated Capstone Project (ICP) requirement that students will undertake in their final years of study. Students are expected to identify a project topic with a supervisor in IoT and a co-supervisor with AI expertise. Students need to work under both supervisors and demonstrate their knowledge in both IoT and AIDA in the project. Through the project, students will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge learned in various subjects in IoT and AIDA to solve practical problems, develop an in-depth understanding of the technologies involved and be inspired to innovate new solutions and technologies that will contribute to the advancement of the IoT and AIDA fields.

 

Remarks

  • Studying for a Secondary Major is a free choice by students and is not mandatory. Only students with a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or above may be considered for Secondary Major enrolment. This Secondary Major may stipulate additional selection criteria for admission and is subject to quota availability. The details on selecting a Secondary Major will be announced in semester two of the first year of study.

Student Message

My passion for robotics and intelligent systems naturally led me to the BEng (Hons) in Electronic Systems and Internet-of-Things programme. The curriculum gave me a powerful foundation in electronics and control systems, transforming my fascination with robotics into practical engineering capability through intense, hands-on project work.


The opportunities provided by PolyU extended well beyond the classroom. During my studies, I conducted advanced research in autonomous robotics, which culminated in presenting my findings at an IEEE international conference and co-authoring papers submitted to the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI). In addition, my exchange semester in the United States broadened my perspective by exposing me to different learning environments and cultures.


Some of my most memorable experiences at PolyU came from serving as Vice President of the PolyU Entrepreneurship Society, as General Secretary of the South Asian Society, and as a class representative. These experiences helped me grow as a leader, collaborate with diverse communities, and make lifelong friendships.

The programme offers an elite blend of rigorous theoretical foundations and high-impact practical applications. Diving deep into advanced modules such as Deep Learning and Computer Vision equipped me with the expertise needed to break into cutting-edge industry roles, where I have already had the opportunity to develop state-of-the-art generative AI models.

Beyond the classroom, my defining moments came from translating academic knowledge into entrepreneurial action. Co-founding the AI startup GoPark alongside my classmates and securing funding at PolyHack showcased the vibrant entrepreneurial spirit fostered at PolyU.
