Our Bachelor's Degree Scheme provides one entry in application for a choice of 5 Majors, offering students the time and flexibility to explore these disciplinary fields and navigate their academic interests.
Students will receive one of the following awards upon successful completion of the programme:
BSc (Hons) in Applied Biology with Biotechnology
BSc (Hons) in Chemical Technology
BSc (Hons) in Food Safety and Technology

This Bachelor's Degree Scheme is intended to nurture future scientists and talents by offering holistic, dynamic, and pioneering innovative science-based education. During their first year of study, students can explore different science disciplines via experiential learning through search and discovery processes, thus cultivating their interest in scientific and technological innovations. The Common Year One curriculum equips our students with the knowledge and skillset to pursue a specific science major according to their aspirations, ability, and interests, beginning in their second year of study.
Objective:

To provide a flexible opportunity for students to explore the beauty of different science disciplines before committing to a major area of study;

To enrich students’ educational journey by providing a great diversity of study options and learning experiences;

To cultivate in students a mindset that embraces risk-taking and creativity and thus facilitates the transition of innovative ideas into practical applications;

To develop skillsets in analysing and proposing solutions to real-life scientific and technological problems; and

To provide training in intercultural communication and promote an understanding of global citizenship.

The multidisciplinary, inquiry-driven, and experiment-based curriculum transforms our extraordinary students from diverse backgrounds into young scientists equipped with the advanced scientific knowledge to excel in various professions. All admitted students will embark on a Common Year One Curriculum comprising of 30 credits.

These subjects are designed to meet the needs of students with different backgrounds, thus providing a solid and adequate foundation from which to explore a range of science disciplines. Towards the end of year one, students can choose their preferred programme through a ranking assessment, which considers a combination of entrance qualification score, Year One GPA, and interview performance.

My journey in this scheme has been dynamic and evolving. From the beginning, I noticed differences between the curriculum and that of a second-year student from Kazakhstan. With recent curriculum updates, the sciences have now been streamlined into a single integrated course, making the learning process far more manageable. I’ve also gained valuable research skills, including how to choose appropriate research methods, which were absent from last year’s curriculum.
One of the highlights of my studies was the subject “Science Professionals in Society”. Hearing from real-world experts across various scientific fields and creating a video to compare research findings allowed me to blend creativity with academic knowledge. The support for students in this faculty is exceptional, with senior students generously sharing career insights and faculty events making networking easy. Volunteering through the department also helped me connect with people who stayed in Hong Kong over the summer, giving me both new friendships and the chance to do laboratory work in my Scheme Leader, Professor Wong’s, lab. I truly appreciated gaining hands-on experience at a pace that felt comfortable and encouraging.
I really recommend this scheme because it combines academic rigour with a caring, connected community - something that I experienced throughout the year. My sincere appreciation goes to my professors, friends, and academic advisor for making this journey so rewarding.
