Double Majors in English and Applied Linguistics and Linguistics and Translation
Programme Overview
The Double Major in English and Applied Linguistics and Linguistics and Translation provides an opportunity for more capable students, who are interested in expanding their study beyond a single degree, to obtain a Second Major.
Students will be given two award parchments, one for each Major programme, which will be issued upon completion of both majors. The honours classifications of the two Major awards need not be identical. |

Entrance Requirement
To be eligible for the Double Major, you must have a cumulative GPA of 3.6 or above at the time of application for the Double Major.
The Double Major application period normally begins after the announcement of overall results for Semester Two of Year One. Your CGPA at the end of Semester Two of Year One will be used to determine your eligibility. If you are interested in pursuing the Double Major, please submit your application via eStudent > Application Forms > (AR164) Application for Major/Secondary Major/Double Major during the designated application period.
Study Duration
Double Major students typically require a longer normal study duration (i.e. beyond four years) and will have to take extra credits on a self-financed basis (i.e. pay a higher tuition fee) to complete their studies.
Programme Structure
The Double Major in English and Applied Linguistics and Linguistics and Translation requires the accumulation of 159 relevant credits plus 3 training credits. In addition to the 27 GUR credits, Double Major students need to complete: (1) 78 Major credits plus 3 training credits; and (2) 57 credits by completing at least 19 subjects (including 3 credits of Chinese DSLR subject, 21 credits of compulsory subjects, and 33 credits of electives) offered by LST. Students who choose this academic pathway must earn 21 level-4 credits from the BAEAL plus 21 level-4 credits from BALT. Double Major students will be exempted from taking WIE and the CAR subjects of the second Major.
Students will take an integrated capstone project offered by the primary major Department, i.e. ENGL4028 Integrated Double Major Capstone Project. The primary supervisor will be from the student’s primary major, and a secondary supervisor from the student’s secondary major will also be assigned to the student.
