About the PolyU English Debate Club
Who We Are
The PolyU English Debate Club (EDC) is a student‑run competitive English debating team under the Department of English and Communication at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
Established in 2023, the club has grown into a vibrant, international community of passionate debaters from diverse faculties and backgrounds.
What We Do
We engage in British Parliamentary (BP), Asian Parliamentary (AP), and Australasian debate formats, representing PolyU in both local and international tournaments. Since our founding, members have competed in online and in‑person debates across Macau, Shanghai, Taiwan, Malaysia, Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia, and beyond, earning awards in novice and open categories.
Beyond competition, we host joint training sessions with sister universities including CUHK, HKU, CityUHK, and MPU, among others.
We also organize tournaments open to not only PolyU students, but also Hong Kong school students, and international participants, fostering a collaborative and inclusive debating culture.
We conduct weekly trainings featuring practice rounds, motion analysis, and skill‑building exercises in English that strengthen logical reasoning, argumentation, and public speaking.
Members can also join our Discord community for online sparring, resource sharing, and peer practice.
PolyU EDC not only sends debaters but also judges to tournaments, giving members opportunities to gain exposure and experience in all aspects of competitive debating, from speaking to adjudication.
