PolyU students win five design awards in 2020 Global Student Innovation Challenge

Occupational Therapy students from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) grabbed five design awards in the 2020 Global Student Innovation Challenge at the 14th International Convention on Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology (i-CREATe 2020), which was hosted online by Taipei Medical University. Among the design awards won by PolyU students this year include the prestigious Silver and Bronze awards.

The annual i-CREATe conference aims to promote awareness, acceptance and adaptation of assistive and rehabilitation technologies in the Asia Pacific region. The Global Student Innovation Challenge, a key component of the convention, provides a platform to encourage students from all over the world to compete against one another in developing creative and innovative devices or solutions that improve the quality of living of the elderly and people with disabilities.

Sockcess – Silver Award Winner

Sockcess is an innovative socking aid, which modifies the designs of current products to better match user's needs.

BraVo

BraVo – Bronze Award Winner

Team members (Master in Occupational Therapy programme): Wong Yi Man, Icy; Wong Ka Hei, Kathy; Wong Suet Ying, Sprindy; Pun Man Kit, Angus

BraVo is an assistive tool which helps women who suffer from one-sided weakness, either after a stroke or from other kinds of injuries, to put on a bra independently.

Bedman

Bedman – Best Presentation Award Winner

Bedman aids bed sheet changing for people with physical difficulties such as hemiparesis, rheumatoid arthritis or reduced upper limb muscle strength.

Eager-to-Hang

Eager-to-Hang – Best Prototype Award Winner

Eager-to-Hang is a new idea derived from current commercial multi-clip hangers that aims to make hanging clothes easier.

Known as the “Oscar” in the education sector, the Reimagine Education Awards is a global contest co-organised by Quacquarelli Symonds, compiler of the QS World University Rankings, and the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. The Awards aim to reward institutions of higher education that have created and implemented outstanding new approaches to teaching and learning. This year, there were 1,200 applicants from all over the world.
