Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

This programme aims to nurture professionals who can provide physiotherapy services that promote their clients’ health and meet society’s healthcare needs. Our graduates have the knowledge, skills and professional attitudes required to practise physiotherapy reliably, ethically and effectively. They are also lifelong learners and active consumers of professional and scientific literature. They develop professionally through continuing education and by participating in investigative and evaluative projects. Their sense of social and professional responsibility is further reflected in their efforts to educate clients, the public and the next generation of therapists.

Programme Characteristics

The physiotherapy curriculum is forward-looking with a strong scientific foundation. Clinical and university-based education are integrated through the use of the latest teaching and learning resources.

Placement Opportunities

The Department trains students to develop global perspectives and actively encourages them to seize opportunities to experience life overseas. The Department also fully supports students who undertake exchanges for clinical placements. Year Three and Four students can undertake 5-week clinical placements at overseas universities. In previous years, placements have been organised at universities in Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Taiwan, Thailand, Sweden, Switzerland and the USA.

Recognition & Prospects

Professional Recognition

Graduate physiotherapists are eligible to register with the Physiotherapists Board of Hong Kong.

Career Prospects

Our graduates have a high rate of employment and a wide range of career options, including positions in acute care hospitals, special schools, homes for the elderly community settings and private practices.

Physiotherapists can specialise, assume managerial positions or become involved in clinical education and research. Opportunities are also available for higher degree studies, such as MSc, MPhil or PhD programmes.

Graduates fulfil the normal entry requirements for the position of Physiotherapist II for the Hospital Authority, private organisations (e.g. private hospitals, private clinics, nursing homes and homes for the elderly), the Department of Health, the Education Bureau (i.e. special schools, early education and training centres), subvented non-governmental organisations and the Social Welfare Department (e.g. community centres, sheltered workshops and special childcare centres).

Curriculum

This is a 4-year full-time programme that involves university-based study and clinical education. The programme is comprised of four main groups of subjects: basic sciences, professional studies, clinical education and the university core curriculum. Clinical education is provided in the form of clinical placements in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, special schools and institutions for the elderly. Students can also choose to take a minor programme or free electives, according to their needs, aspirations and abilities.

Student Message

Studying in the Physiotherapy programme at Polyu set me on an extraordinary expedition, transforming me into a physiotherapist imbued with expertise and empathy.

The courses begin by instilling fundamental concepts, laying a solid foundation before delving into the complexities of rehabilitation. The laboratory facilities and practical classes allowed me to connect theory and practice, enabling me to hone my skills. Meanwhile, group work allowed me to collaborate with diverse students, fostering collaborative learning and improving alongside my peers.

One of the most remarkable aspects of this programme has been the unwavering support of my professors. They went above and beyond to ensure my academic success when I often had to participate in sports competitions. They worked tirelessly to help me catch up on missed work, demonstrating their dedication to supporting their students’ well-being.

As a non-local student, I felt incredibly fortunate to be part of this welcoming environment. The generosity of my peers in sharing learning materials and the encouragement of my professors have been truly heartwarming. I made many cherished friends and felt deeply appreciated. This motivated me to study hard and strive for excellence, to be confident in my future career.

AO Weng I

The first year of studying physiotherapy at HKPolyU introduced me to the world of physiotherapy. The programme strikes a balance between flexibility and pedagogical effectiveness. Important courses, such as Functional Anatomy and Movement Science, adopted a blended learning approach, in which I self-studied lecture materials and then attended practical laboratory sessions. This mode of teaching allowed me to control my own learning pace and to arrange my schedule to engage in more activities flexibly. Laboratory sessions combine traditional and technological teaching methods, enabling me to learn in a more immersive and straightforward way. For example, we learned Functional Anatomy in the laboratory sessions by using cadavers, apps, VR tools, etc. We were also given opportunities to discuss real-life case scenarios, through which I interacted with my classmates and expressed my opinions. In Semester 2, we had the chance to participate in a job-shadowing activity at the HKPolyU rehabilitation clinic. I have become more familiar with the process of providing physiotherapy in clinical settings. I also learned how to communicate with patients verbally and non-verbally. To sum up, the journey of learning physiotherapy at HKPolyU is an inspiring and enjoyable experience.
