Stream Study for Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Scheme in Aviation Engineering
Students can choose to pursue one of the following study streams:

  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Aviation Services Engineering
  • Aircraft Maintenance Engineering*

* Students who opt for the HKAR-147 Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Training (for HKAR-66 Cat. B1.1 Aircraft Maintenance license) are required to choose the Aircraft Maintenance Engineering stream. The professional aircraft maintenance training option conducted in accordance with the HKAR-147 (for the HKAR-66 Cat. B1.1 Aircraft Maintenance License) is available to students enrolled on both award programmes with an additional training fee.

BEng (Hons) in Aeronautical Engineering

First Study Year

All admitted students will embark on a Common Year One curriculum within the Faculty of Engineering.

Second Study Year

The second-year curriculum focuses on foundational knowledge in aeronautical engineering. Students acquire knowledge of materials, mechanics, as well as electrical and electronics engineering issues that are fundamental to aircraft systems. In addition, students gain hands-on experience with aircraft component manufacturing and maintenance.

Third Study Year

The third-year curriculum provides students with more advanced knowledge of aircraft structure and materials, aerodynamics, propulsion, aircraft dynamics, as well as control and avionics. This strengthens their core knowledge base and supports their further study.

Final Study Year

Students can apply their skills and knowledge in a Capstone Project to further develop their professional engineering skills. Each student can choose a topic that interests them, such as unmanned aerial vehicles, avionics or aircraft design. They can also choose to focus on a desired elective stream to acquire specialised knowledge.

Student Message

In 2020, when the pandemic first began, all lectures and courses were forced online. At that time, I sometimes questioned if online learning was really what I wanted and whether my decision to study in Hong Kong was the right one. Now, after four years, I can confidently say that this is exactly what I wanted. I feel fortunate that I didn’t let the pandemic hold me back.

Throughout my studies, I was given numerous opportunities to explore and grow. The wide variety of elective courses allowed me to gain a comprehensive understanding of the entire aviation industry. Thanks to the unwavering support of the AAE Department, I was able to embark on an exchange semester and participate in the AIAA Design/Build/Fly (DBF) competition held in the US.

The exchange semester provided me with invaluable insights into how aviation operates in European countries and gave me a chance to experience their unique teaching methods. The DBF competition was an incredible experience, during which my team and I designed and manufactured a remote control aircraft. PolyU's support during this process was unfailing. Not only did our professors offer suggestions for optimising our design, but the Industrial Centre also assisted us with manufacturing. The Centre provided access to essential machines such as laser cutters, water jets and 3D printers, which helped to enhance our hands-on skills.

Looking back, I’m grateful for all of my opportunities and experiences at PolyU. My journey here has reaffirmed my passion for aviation and engineering, and I’m excited for what the future holds. For all the prospective students starting this journey, my advice is to embrace every opportunity and make the most of the incredible resources and support available to you. With determination and an open mind, you’ll find that your decision to study here is one that you won’t regret.

SHIH Wei Ting

I call Hong Kong my second home. I still remember the very first day I arrived in the city, when I felt completely at sea. Everything was new and different. However, the people of Hong Kong were very welcoming and comforting. Soon university life began and things started to fall into place.

The rigorous courses offered at PolyU made me a keen learner, always seeking to explore new knowledge. By providing a wide range of courses, offshore summer and semester exchanges and diverse research opportunities, PolyU takes its undergraduate offering to a different and extraordinary level. Not only does PolyU encourage its students to participate in several international competitions, but it also provides all of the facilities an undergraduate engineering student could need, such as the Industrial Centre (the only one in Hong Kong), 3D printing labs, aircraft simulators and much more.

I availed myself of almost all the opportunities available at PolyU. For example, I participated in a Design/Build/Fly competition organised by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, during which my team and I designed and manufactured a remote control aircraft from scratch according to certain set missions. The Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering provided the perfect platform for me to grow as a student and a prospective leader.

AHMAD Mughees

If you are someone who strives for excellence and constantly explores opportunities, then you will be amazed by what the Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering (AAE) has to offer. The courses are designed not only to help you understand the advanced principles of aeronautical engineering but also to give you the knowledge required to succeed in the industry.

As an international student, I am always surprised by how supportive and encouraging PolyU and AAE are to their students. In terms of facilities and teaching quality, PolyU provides state-of-the-art facilities and employs outstanding faculty members with proven capabilities in the fields of education and research. I learned to explore my skills and discovered my strengths as well as my weaknesses, and PolyU never failed to support me in improving myself as a person and a student. I wholeheartedly recommend PolyU and can attest that the programme is a life-changing major for those who pursue excellence.
