Abstract

Mindset, defined as learners' fundamental beliefs about the malleability of abilities, exerts a significant influence on learning outcomes. Following established scale development procedures, this study systematically constructs and validates a mindset scale for English-Chinese translation ability through three phases: theoretical modeling, operationalization of the construct, and empirical validation. The proposed scale, which is grounded in mindset theory and translation ability frameworks, identifies two distinct orientations: a fixed mindset (viewing translation ability as static and immutable) and a growth mindset (perceiving translation ability as progressive). Each orientation is operationalized through three dimensions: native language mastery, target language (English) proficiency, and cross-linguistic transfer ability. An 18-item measurement tool was developed and subjected to rigorous psychometric evaluation using empirical data. The results confirmed the scale's robust psychometric properties, including satisfactory reliability, construct validity, convergent-discriminant validity, and criterion-related validity. This study utilizes the first dedicated instrument for assessing mindset in English-Chinese translation ability. It concomitantly advances research in the field of translator psychology and offers researchers pedagogical implications for translation training.
