PolyU hosted “Global Youth Leaders Summit 2020” to re-connect young minds around the world despite global distancing

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) organised the "Global Youth Leaders Summit 2020" (“the Summit”) online with the overarching theme of "Transforming Crisis into Re-connection" last Saturday (24 October). The Summit attracted an audience of over 350 participants from over 10 countries and regions, including Australia, Belgium, Cambodia, Japan, Mainland China, Rwanda, South Korea, Sweden, Tanzania, the US and the UK, etc. It was followed by two interactive virtual platforms: a 24-hour “Global Re-connection Hackathon” and a “Global Reflection Workshop”, which were attended by 80 students nominated by over 10 institutions, who displayed innovation and creativity in their responses to the current pressing global challenges.

PolyU to host a Webinar at “Hong Kong FinTech Week 2020” to explore ways to address the talent need of the FinTech industry and support the fast-paced development in the Greater Bay Area

Asia’s annual flagship fintech event, “Hong Kong FinTech Week”, will take place from 2 to 6 November 2020, featuring a variety of online events which aim to connect experts from around the world to discuss the future trends and challenges of the fintech industry. The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) will organise a webinar on the first day of “Hong Kong FinTech Week”, inviting renowned speakers from the industry to share their insights into the outlook of fintech in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and explore ways to foster exchanges and collaboration among cities. The speakers will also discuss strategies to facilitate talent development and find solutions to cope with the rising demand for talent driven by the rapidly developing fintech industry, so as to position Hong Kong as a strong support force for the development of fintech in the Greater Bay Area. Hong Kong is now home to more than 600 fintech companies, about 10% more than in 2019. More than half of these companies have indicated that they are operating in or plan to expand into other parts of the Greater Bay Area, or view Hong Kong as a base for global expansion. Alongside the steady growth of the local fintech community, several virtual banks have officially launched their services this year. The fast-growing fintech market in the Greater Bay Area has led to a huge demand for manpower. PolyU is committed to providing fintech education and training for people of various academic backgrounds and experience, with a full spectrum of fintech related programmes available, including: BSc (Hons) in Financial Technology and Artificial Intelligence, MSc in Information Technology, Master of Finance, Master of Science in Business Analytics, Doctor of FinTech, and the Certified Financial Technologist (CFT) Examination Preparation Programme. In addition, PolyU launched the “AMTD FinTech Centre of PolyU Faculty of Business” in 2018 to promote university-industry collaboration, which aims to make significant contributions to the fintech industry. PolyU’s Department of Computing is also devoted to undertaking research on the technologies that are critical to the development of fintech, such as blockchain, cybersecurity, machine learning, and produce impactful outputs. PolyU researcher honoured with Green Talents Award by German Federal Ministry of Education and Research

Dr Amos Darko, a PhD graduate and currently a Research Assistant Professor of Department of Building and Real Estate, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), was recently honoured with a Green Talents Award in the Green Talents Competition 2020 organised by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Over 580 talents from 87 countries across the globe took part in the competition. The award, granted to young researchers with outstanding contribution in making the world more sustainable, recognises Dr Darko's accomplishments in adopting and promoting green building technologies in the developing world. Dr Darko successfully mapped out a novel "Implementation Strategy" in his PhD research. In Ghana, a developing country and Dr Darko's home country, green building technologies adoption is often hindered by high costs and lack of government incentives. Dr Darko's study investigated the issues and adopted strategies from developed countries, while recognising the challenges of the Ghanaian context. The jury of German experts was impressed by Dr Darko as an engaged scientist who conducts research on a highly relevant issue, especially for developing countries with their often young and growing populations. Education Info Day 2020 to be held online on 10 October to offer updated information and study advice

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) will hold an online Education Info Day on 10 October 2020 (Saturday), to provide students with the most up-to-date information about its full-time undergraduate and higher diploma programmes. A series of online seminars, video shows, sharing sessions and consultations with PolyU academics and student ambassadors will also be arranged to help prospective students plan for their further studies at the University. Starting from the 2020/21 admission exercise, PolyU has revised the mechanism for converting score points for results at Levels 5**, 5* and 5 of Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) subjects. Student can obtain more information regarding this mechanism at the Info Day. For the 2020/21 academic year, PolyU has attained a remarkable admissions profile. Among the undergraduates admitted, 251 scored at least 5** in one subject, with both Chinese and English at level 3 or above, in the DSE examination. Amongst JUPAS applicants admitted this year, the average score for the Best 5 DSE subjects is 24.1*. Eleven admittees from BSc(Hons) Physiotherapy, BSc(Hons) Occupational Therapy and BSc(Hons) Radiography, achieved 5** in three subjects. Details of the average DSE scores for PolyU’s 2020/21 admittees will be released on 10 October 2020 at Study@PolyU (http://www51.polyu.edu.hk/eprospectus/ug/jupas). Among the PolyU’s 45 full-time public-funded undergraduate programmes, “Scheme in Design” was the most popular, being chosen by 562 JUPAS applicants as their first choice. “Nursing” and “Hotel Management” placed second and third, attracting 518 and 399 applicants respectively. The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) today held a flag-raising ceremony on campus in commemoration of the 71st anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Dr Lam Tai-fai, Council Chairman of PolyU, Professor Jin-Guang Teng, President of PolyU and Dr Katherine Ngan Ng Yu-ying, Court Chairman of PolyU together with several hundred guests including Council and Court members, senior management, staff and students attended the ceremony to show support for the continued development of our Nation as well as the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong.

Demand for Medical Physicists continues to grow as cancer treatment evolves PolyU launches the first dedicated interdisciplinary master programme in medical physics to nurture future clinical and academic talents in the field

As medical technology advances, breakthroughs in diagnosing and treating various critical illnesses are achieved, and as the design of patient treatment plans becomes more precise and personalised, healthcare practitioners are expected to keep abreast of the latest developments so as to master the most sophisticated technologies. In a cancer treatment team, members are specialised in their respective fields, yet they work together seamlessly to devise the most effective treatment for patients. One of the lesser-known of the specialists in such a team, the Medical Physicist, is responsible for formulating treatment plans, as well as monitoring and maintaining radiation equipment used to ensure precise, effective and safe delivery of treatment. Medical Physicists specialise in radiation treatment technology, with their expertise spanning from diagnostic imaging to radiotherapy, and they are "strong backers" of the cancer treatment team. However, a higher degree programme in Medical Physics was previously not available in Hong Kong or in nearby regions. To meet the future demand for Medical Physicists, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has, this academic year, launched the first Master of Science in Medical Physics (MScMP) programme in Hong Kong. The curriculum is designed to cover various aspects including health technology, physics and engineering, offering interdisciplinary training for professionals who are keen to pursue a career in the field of medical physics. High demand for cancer treatment Creating local training opportunities The ageing population in Hong Kong poses immense challenges to the local healthcare system and the rising demand for cancer treatment is definitely one of them. To maintain the quality of healthcare services, it is essential to have more qualified professionals in the workforce. There are about 150 Medical Physicists currently practising in Hong Kong, serving at the Hospital Authority as well as in public and private hospitals. They possess both physics and medical expertise, playing a vital role in diagnosis and the formulation of treatment plans, as well as ensuring proper operation of equipment to achieve the treatment goal. In 2018, the Department of Health Technology and Informatics of PolyU received positive responses from the industry regarding the introduction of an MScMP programme in Hong Kong. After two years’ preparation, the inaugural 2020/21 cohort of 26 students has enrolled, among which 70% have a physics or engineering-related degree while 20% are graduates in radiotherapy. The majority are working adults, and one-fifth of them are in the healthcare/medical field.

Four PolyU young researchers receive China's Excellent Young Scientists Fund 2020

Four young researchers at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) have been awarded funding from China's Excellent Young Scientists Fund 2020. Each researcher will receive RMB1.2 million to conduct pioneering research in Hong Kong over a period of three years. Under the National Natural Science Foundation of China, China’s Excellent Young Scientists Fund has been extended to young scientists in Hong Kong and Macau for applications from eight designated universities since 2019. It aims to support young scientists (under 38 for male and under 40 for female) who have attained outstanding achievements in fundamental research to pursue innovative research in areas of their choice, fostering them to be internationally leading scholars in their respective fields. Researcher Department Research title Research summary Dr Xiaolin ZHU, Assistant Professor Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics Remote Sensing: Time Series Image Processing Dr Zhu has developed a series of advanced technologies for processing satellite images, which improve the ability and accuracy of time-series remote sensing for monitoring land surface changes. This project will further develop the framework and model for multi-dimensional data fusion, a technology needed for integrating data from multiple satellites in the near future. Dr AN Liang, Associate Professor   Department of Mechanical Engineering Flow and Heat/Mass Transfer in Electrochemical Energy Systems Dr An has systematically studied the characteristics of flow and mass transport in a complex microporous structure in which electrochemical reactions occur, and achieved a number of innovative results. The primary objective of this project is to investigate key issues related to flow and heat/mass transfer in electrochemical energy systems at different scales. Dr ZHOU Chao, Assistant Professor Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Unsaturated Soils and Problematic Soils This project aims to improve the fundamental understanding and modelling capability of unsaturated loess behaviour under cyclic thermo-hydro-mechanical loads. The success of this project will help engineers to improve the design of pavement and railway embankment in the loess region. Dr YANG Lei Ray, Assistant Professor Department of Computing Battery-free Internet of Things This project proposes an efficient and large-scale battery-free Internet of things (IoT), which aims to harvest energy from ambient electromagnetic waves for wireless communication and sensing. This project works towards the key theory and technologies of the new generation IoT, facilitates the coexistence and the fusion of multi-protocols, multi-target and multi-networks, and finally promotes its application in industry. It is encouraging to see that more young scientists from PolyU are supported by the Nation to further develop their research. PolyU Design Degree Show goes virtual for the first time providing an innovative 3D viewing experience

The PolyU Design Degree Show 2020, organised by the School of Design of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU Design), is now open to the public until 25 October 2020. Going virtual this year in view of the current COVID-19 pandemic situation, the show has been specially designed to provide a 3D viewing experience, just like touring in person. This annual show highlights student projects from both the bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes covering a wide spectrum of topics from various disciplines, namely Advertising Design, Communication Design, Environment and Interior Design, Social Design, Product Design, Digital Media, Interactive Media, Design Practices, Interaction Design, International Design and Business Management, Multimedia and Entertainment Technology, as well as Urban Environments Design. What’s new for this year is a section set up to showcase the work of doctoral degree students, making a total of about 150 projects on display in the show. During the 3D virtual tour, visitors will see many creative and inspiring designs such as a future double-decker compartment for the ageing population, a mobile game for improving intergenerational relationships and a planter solution for sustainable living in densely populated areas, to name just a few. “The show is a stellar highlight of our teaching and learning, offering an invaluable opportunity to employers seeking the best designers; enlightening the public with world class design; and inspiring secondary school students to pursue design as a career,” said Professor Kun-Pyo Lee, Dean of School of Design at PolyU. “Enabling virtual viewing of different physical exhibits is unique among world’s top design schools especially when students had to overcome a lot of challenges during this difficult moment under the pandemic.” Online guided tours are arranged with student ambassadors to walk visitors through the show and share the creative ideas of some selected projects. PolyU designs new dual-task exercise for stroke patients to effectively reduce the risk of falls and fall-related injuries

Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in Hong Kong1, hospitalising over 25,000 people each year2. Despite declines in stroke mortality over the past years, it remains one of the major causes of adult disability, greatly affecting the daily lives of sufferers. Individuals with stroke also have a higher risk of fall – up to 73% of patients fall in the first six months after being discharged from hospital.3-13 To shed light on ways to reduce the risk of post-stroke falls, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has conducted the world’s first study to examine the effect of dual-task exercise on dual-task mobility and falls in people living with a chronic stroke, and subsequently designed an eight-week community-based rehabilitation programme for 84 people with chronic stroke. The study, titled “Dual-Task Exercise Reduces Cognitive-Motor Interference in Walking and Falls after Stroke: A Randomized Controlled Study” (link), appeared in Stroke, a peer-reviewed medical journal published by the American Heart Association. It was revealed that dual-task exercises were able to help reduce the risk of falls and injurious falls by 25.0% and 22.2% respectively, bringing about significant improvement to the dual-task mobility of people post-stroke. As such, the programme has the potential to roll out in community and home-based settings, where healthcare resources are scarce.

PolyU-XJTU Silk Road International School of Engineering “Belt and Road Advanced Professional Development Programme in Power and Energy 2020” successfully completed Over 200 professionals trained in three years New opportunities opened up for the industry

The “Belt and Road Advanced Professional Development Programme in Power and Energy” (the Programme), organised for the third consecutive year by the Silk Road International School of Engineering (SRISE) in partnership with power corporations from Mainland China and Hong Kong, was successfully completed yesterday (2 September). Nearly 150 participants from 26 countries/regions joined the online closing ceremony officiated by Mr Matthew CHEUNG Kin-chung, Chief Secretary for Administration of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government and senior executives of the co-organisers, to witness the fruitful results achieved over the last three years. SRISE was set up jointly by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) in 2017, with a view to promoting collaboration in higher education and scientific research among the Belt and Road countries and regions, Mainland China and Hong Kong, and to nurturing diversified talents for global development. Since 2018, SRISE has been partnering with the State Grid Corporation of China (State Grid) and The Hongkong Electric Company, Limited (HK Electric) to organise annual programmes. This cross-regional and multi-cultural university-industry collaboration, being the first-of-its-kind in Mainland China and Hong Kong, has attracted more than 200 industry professionals to participate in its three years of operation. The theme for this year’s programme was “High-quality, Sustainable, Resilient Power Grid for Green and Smart Living”. In view of the COVID-19 pandemic, a series of web-based activities including talks and interactive webinars hosted by experts from State Grid, XJTU, PolyU and HK Electric were launched in mid-August to replace field trips and seminars held before. Even though participants were unable to visit the power facilities in person, they could benefit from the convenience of the internet to connect and interact with speakers and participants, and to share the latest industry knowledge of power and energy.
