PolyU Design hosts "Time-capsuled Histories: Six Decades of PolyU Design" exhibition, celebrating 60 years of design excellence in Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Design (PolyU Design) is hosting the exhibition “Time-capsuled Histories: Six Decades of PolyU Design” from now until 11 November 2024. Part of its 60th anniversary celebrations, the exhibition showcases the School’s history and features works by alumni spanning half a century, witnessing the University’s significant role in advancing design education and the design industry in Hong Kong. As Hong Kong’s first and iconic comprehensive design institution, PolyU Design is a vital hub for design education and research, offering world-class undergraduate and postgraduate programmes to nurture creative talent across various industries. The exhibition is divided into five sections: PolyU Design’s headship mapping, curriculum development, research development, alumni design works and a showcase of research publications. Commissioned by Prof. Kun-Pyo LEE, Dean of PolyU Design, a research team from the School dedicated over a year to sourcing valuable artefacts and materials from alumni and former staff from various eras and sectors who have close connections to the School’s evolution. The materials have been meticulously organised and presented using a visually appealing and systematic timeline to showcase the journey of PolyU Design from its roots in the Hong Kong Technical College to its home in PolyU, capturing responses to changes in industry policies and technological advancements. The exhibition explores the School’s history and the relationship between design education and social and economic transformations in Hong Kong, while also providing a deeper narrative of design development in the City. Another exhibition highlight is the impressive lineup of works created by designers who graduated from PolyU Design between 1973 and 2023. It highlights the evolution of design and artistic works from the 1980s to the present, reflecting changes in both local and global markets. These pieces include art inspired by the red lampshades of local wet markets symbolising Hong Kong’s value and global talents, a speaker system designed from a recycled plastic container, a branding project for the HKSAR Government’s Green@Community initiative, a multi-functional golf bag that has been a popular seller for over 16 years, and many more. Multiple research publications by PolyU Design scholars from different eras are also exhibited. PolyU welcomes 2024 Policy Address measures on education and innovation & technology development

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) welcomes the diverse measures announced by the Chief Executive in the 2024 Policy Address. These include the development of the Northern Metropolis University Town, the establishment of a third medical school, the creation of the “Study in Hong Kong” brand, the expansion of research funding, and increased investment in innovation and technology (I&T) industries. These initiatives aim to advance Hong Kong as an international hub for post-secondary education and health and medical innovation, and an international I&T centre. Dr LAM Tai-fai, Council Chairman of PolyU, said, “PolyU fully supports the Government’s initiatives to promote Chinese culture. Last year, we launched the Research Centre for Chinese History and Culture to enhance education in Chinese history and culture. In March this year, we kick-started the ‘PolyU Chinese Culture Festival’ to highlight the beauty and importance of various aspects of Chinese culture, fostering a deeper appreciation of Chinese heritage. This festival aims to strengthen pride and a sense of belonging to the Nation among the younger generation and contribute to Hong Kong’s development into an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange. PolyU is dedicated to fostering an internationalised learning environment and drawing students from around the globe to Hong Kong. In the 2023/24 academic year, PolyU organised over 330 undergraduate recruitment and promotion events across nearly 40 countries and regions, including 26 Belt and Road and ASEAN countries. The number of non-local undergraduate applicants from these regions has increased by 50% this year. PolyU will continue to actively promote the unique strengths of Hong Kong's higher education worldwide. Strengthening the position as an international I&T hub To support the Government’s initiative to promote the low-altitude economy (LAE) as a growth engine for new quality productive forces, PolyU is establishing a research centre for LAE to explore viable solutions for developing this sector in Hong Kong, supporting the smart city development. PolyU’s research teams have extensive expertise in technologies related to LAE, such as precise control and reliable positioning of unmanned aerial vehicles, airspace management, flight routes/depots and vertiports locations optimisation, etc. Additionally, the University plans to launch an MSc programme in LAE next year to nurture talent for future industrial development. PolyU has established three research centres under two InnoHK research clusters. We are pleased with the Government’s plan to create a third research cluster focused on advanced manufacturing, materials, energy, and sustainable development, including a research centre under the cluster to participate in the Chang’e-8 mission. With over 30 years of experience in deep space research, PolyU is the only university in Hong Kong participating in multiple national space missions. The university will fully support these initiatives. PolyU welcomes the Government’s expansion of research funding, which attracts more organisations to support research endeavours of institutions. In the 2023/24 academic year, PolyU ranked second among the eight UGC-funded institutions in terms of funding from the Research Grants Council, underscoring our research strengths. We are pleased to see the Government’s increased investment in I&T industries, including life and health technology, AI and robotics, semi-conductors and smart devices, advanced materials, and new energy. Over the years, PolyU has incubated over 500 startups through the PolyVentures ecosystem, involving more than 7,600 entrepreneurs. PolyU and Sun Yat-sen University collaborate to cultivate interdisciplinary medicine-engineering talent to support the long-term development of the healthcare system and to boost Hong Kong’s biomedical industry

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) yesterday to initiate education and research collaboration in interdisciplinary medicine and engineering. This partnership aims to jointly cultivate medical professionals, develop new programmes in medical technology, establish joint laboratories, facilitate academic and professional exchanges, and enhance collaborative research outcomes. By leveraging the strengths of both institutions, the collaboration will promote the novel development in interdisciplinary medicine and engineering, help to alleviate the pressures on Hong Kong’s healthcare system, elevate clinical medical research, and support the development of Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area (GBA) into an international health and medical innovation hub. The signing was witnessed by Prof. Wing-tak WONG, Deputy President and Provost of PolyU, and Prof. YANG Qinghua, Executive Vice President of SYSU. Prof. David SHUM, Dean of the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences of PolyU, and Prof. KUANG Ming, Dean of Zhongshan School of Medicine of SYSU, signed the MOU on behalf of both parties. The two institutions will focus on exploring educational and research collaboration in interdisciplinary medicine and engineering, including the integration of PolyU’s niche disciplines with the clinical medical expertise of the SYSU Zhongshan School of Medicine. Both institutions plan to jointly offer an eight-year (four plus four) dual bachelor’s degree programme in medicine and explore a dual degree professional doctorate programme in medicine and engineering. The initiative aims to cultivate students with expertise in medicine and engineering and to facilitate graduates in obtaining cross-border medical practice qualifications that are recognised in both Hong Kong and Mainland China. Prof. Wing-tak Wong stated, “This collaboration is a significant step towards PolyU’s goal of establishing a medical school. As one of the world’s top 100 universities, PolyU boasts strong capabilities in health science and engineering. The Zhongshan School of Medicine at SYSU is renowned for its foundational and clinical medicine disciplines, recognised as ‘Double First-Class’ disciplines. Together, we can harness the advantages of ‘medicine-engineering integration’ to create synergies in cutting-edge research and clinical medicine, foster the integrated development of the medical and healthcare disciplines, nurture more clinical medical talents, and meet the high demand for quality healthcare services in Hong Kong and the GBA.” Prof. Kuang Ming stated, “The Zhongshan School of Medicine of SYSU has maintained close ties with PolyU. Over the years, the Zhongshan School of Medicine has provided a high-quality teaching platform for cultivating top medical talent and offering strong academic support for medical services. PolyU has a long history in teaching and research of health science, training numerous allied healthcare professionals who are familiar with the operation of the public healthcare system and are well-positioned to extend medical training to medical students. With the development of artificial intelligence and robotics, there is an increasing demand in the GBA for medical talent with a ‘medicine-engineering integration’ background. This collaboration is expected to achieve complementary advantages, advance medical education and curriculum innovation, and address the long-term medical talent needs of the GBA.” The current population of the GBA has reached 86 million, with an increase of over 440,000 permanent residents last year. The population of the Northern Metropolis will reach 2.5 million, which is one-third of Hong Kong’s total population. This highlights the urgent demand for high-quality medical services in Hong Kong and the GBA. Therefore, it is imperative to cultivate medical students with knowledge in both medical and engineering technologies. Additionally, the HKSAR Government hopes to leverage Hong Kong’s medical strengths to fully promote the development of the biomedicine and medical device industries, which will increase the demand for talent in clinical medical technology. PolyU has a solid foundation and extensive experience in health science education and research, supported by world-class facilities. The University has submitted a proposal to the HKSAR Government for the establishment of a PolyU satellite campus in the Northern Metropolis with a medical school. We hope the new medical school will help ensure the quality and sustainability of future medical services. Over the past 40 years, PolyU has nurtured over 50,000 allied healthcare professionals in various disciplines, including medical laboratory science, medical imaging, radiotherapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, nursing, optometry, prosthetics and orthotics, and speech therapy, supporting the long-term development of the healthcare system. The University has established strong collaborative relationships with hospitals under the Hospital Authority, private hospitals, and other medical institutions. PolyU also excelled in various disciplines globally, including engineering, data science and AI, and nursing. The collaboration between PolyU and SYSU is expected to leverage their strong capabilities in clinical medicine and engineering, further deepening clinical medical cooperation across the border. PolyU Info Day 2024 draws over 40,000 visitors

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) today held its Information Day (Undergraduate and Taught Postgraduate Programmes) 2024 (Info Day). PolyU President Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, Deputy President and Provost Prof. Wing-tak WONG, Vice President (Education) Prof. Kwok-yin WONG and Vice President (Student and Global Affairs) Prof. Ben YOUNG attended the opening ceremony alongside other management team members, faculty/school deans and representatives to kick off the event, before visiting booths set up by faculties, schools and departments. This year, Info Day attracted over 40,000 secondary school students, parents and individuals interested in pursuing further studies to learn about the University’s latest admissions and programme information. The Info Day featured a series of activities, including admissions talks that covered admission information for applications via JUPAS, non-JUPAS (non-local qualifications), senior year admission (Associate Degree or Higher Diploma qualifications) and National College Entrance Examinations (Gaokao). There were also 200 programme consultations, guided tours to the University’s laboratories and other facilities, student sharing sessions and workshops, allowing participants to gain a deeper understanding of the PolyU admission requirements and obtain programme information for planning their academic journey. The activities attracted a great deal of interest from both students and parents. With the aim of nurturing future-ready professionals and driving social innovation, PolyU is enhancing its undergraduate admission arrangements from the 2025/26 academic year onwards to provide students with more flexible and interdisciplinary study options. The University will also offer various new undergraduate and taught postgraduate programmes that cover emerging fields to help meet society’s talent needs. Among them, the Faculty of Construction and Environment will launch the BSc (Hons) in Architectural Studies*, while the Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences, which will be established in January 2025, will introduce the BSc (Hons) Scheme in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (Data Science and Analytics / Financial Technology and Artificial Intelligence). From the 2025/26 academic year, PolyU will offer different pathways for students to enable them to tailor their studies to better suit their personal interests. Students with clear academic goals can choose their preferred departmental schemes or programmes directly, while those who wish to further explore their aspirations can enrol in one of the seven new bachelor’s degree schemes to gain a better understanding about the different majors available within a faculty. In particular, students who are admitted to the Bachelor’s Degree Scheme in Interdisciplinary Studies will be able to explore study areas from across different faculties/schools before deciding their majors, allowing for more self-directed and flexible learning. Under these new arrangements, all undergraduates (except for those from the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences and those enrolled in the Bachelor’s Degree Scheme in Interdisciplinary Studies) will follow a Common Year 1 Curriculum within their faculty in their first year to build a solid foundation of knowledge, after which they can choose a major within the faculty based on their preferences and academic performance. Following the same mechanism, students who have enrolled in departmental schemes or programmes will also be allowed to switch to other majors within their faculty. PolyU has always attached great importance to holistic education and strives to nurture students’ global outlook. Starting from the 2025/26 academic year, an additional HK$30,000 overseas exchange funding will be offered to all undergraduate students who receive an academic Entry Scholarship, enabling them to participate in the student exchange programmes. PolyU and EssilorLuxottica join hands to cultivate next generation of professional optometrists; EssilorLuxottica donates full set of optometric equipment to PolyU School of Optometry to enhance students’ clinical skills

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has received the donation of a complete set of optometric equipment for an eye examination room from EssilorLuxottica, demonstrating their commitment to and collaboration in training and fostering development of future optometrists. An equipment handover ceremony took place at PolyU on October 8, in a simple yet significant event highlighting the impact of this donation on nurturing the next generation of professional optometrists. The ceremony was jointly officiated by Prof. Kwok-yin WONG, PolyU Vice President (Education); Prof. CAI Jing, Acting Dean of the PolyU Faculty of Health and Social Sciences; and Prof. KEE Chea-su, Head and Professor of the PolyU School of Optometry, together with Mr Pan LU, General Manager, HK&TW Professional Solutions at EssilorLuxottica; Mr David SOH, Managing Director of Essilor Hong Kong Ltd; and Mr Henry LEUNG, Commerical Director of Essilor Hong Kong Ltd. The inauguration of the eye examination room symbolises a step forward for students of the School of Optometry, who can contribute to the optometry industry in the future. PolyU placed among the top 100 universities in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for four consecutive years, ranking 84th globally

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has been ranked 84th in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025. This marks a 3-place improvement from last year and the fourth consecutive year for the University to rank within the world’s top 100 universities, affirming its influence and achievements in the global higher education sector. Including 2,092 universities from across 115 countries and territories, the Rankings evaluate universities based on 18 performance indicators, which are grouped into five areas: Teaching, Research environment, Research quality, International outlook, and Industry. PolyU has performed commendably in several research-related indicators. PolyU InnoTech Open Day x Alumni Homecoming to be held on 19 Oct; an opportunity to witness the University’s remarkable achievements in empowering Hong Kong’s I&T development

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) will hold the “InnoTech Open Day x Alumni Homecoming” on 19 October 2024 (Saturday). The InnoTech Open Day will showcase the University’s impactful achievements in interdisciplinary research, knowledge transfer and entrepreneurship that contribute to Hong Kong’s development into an international innovation and technology (I&T) hub. 232 PolyU scholars ranked among World’s Top 2% Most-cited Scientists 2024 for career-long citation impact

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has achieved remarkable results in the World’s Top 2% Most-cited Scientists 2024 lists, according to the latest two rankings compiled by Stanford University. Notably, 232 scholars were included based on their career-long citation impact. Together with the scholars named for their single-year citation impact, a total of 355 PolyU scholars were recognised. Based on career-long citation impact, PolyU stands out globally with the largest representation of top scholars in the sub-field of Building and Construction, boasting 18 scholars. It also demonstrates the strongest research performance in Hong Kong with the largest representation of top scholars across 12 sub-fields. Beyond Building and Construction, the University leads locally with the most top scholars in Materials (19 scholars), Energy (15 scholars), Civil Engineering (13 scholars), Operations Research (10 scholars), Optoelectronics and Photonics (10 scholars), Nursing (7 scholars), Electrical and Electronic Engineering (7 scholars), Logistics and Transportation (6 scholars), Mechanical Engineering and Transports (6 scholars), Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences (4 scholars), and Rehabilitation (4 scholars). In addition, four PolyU academics are placed among the top 10 scholars worldwide in their respective sub-fields, seven scholars are ranked among the top 20, while 17 scholars are placed within the top 50 worldwide. This represents the highest number of top-ranked scholars among universities in Hong Kong. The World’s Top 2% Most-cited Scientists compiled by Stanford University is divided into two lists, based on scholars’ career-long (1960-2023) and single-year (2023) impact, recognising  their lifetime achievement and recent research impact respectively. Over 100,000 top scientists globally were grouped into 22 subject fields and 174 sub-fields. The lists were based on indicators including citations, scientific research output and a composite indicator for citation impact, up to the end of 2023. A thousand PolyU members and guests attend flag-raising ceremony to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) today held a flag-raising ceremony on campus to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. PolyU’s Council Chairman Dr LAM Tai-fai, President Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, Deputy Council Chairman Dr Lawrence LI Kwok-chang, University Court Chairman Dr Katherine NGAN, Honorary Court Chairman Dr Roy CHUNG Chi-ping, President Emeritus Prof. the Honourable POON Chung-kwong, Ms ZHOU Qian, Director-General of the Department of Treaty and Law, Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the HKSAR, together with Council and Court members, University senior management, University Fellows, Outstanding Alumni, members of the PolyU Foundation and close to 1,000 distinguished guests, staff, students and alumni joined the ceremony, wishing prosperity and stability for the Nation. HKSAR Government and PolyU chart a new chapter of Chinese cultural fashion creativity: “China-chic” fashion designs to celebrate National Day

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) joined hands to start a new chapter in Chinese cultural and fashion creativity, showcasing the charm of Chinese culture and the unique grace of modern women to the world, and highlighting Hong Kong’s status as an “East-meets-West Centre for International Cultural Exchange”. PolyU’s School of Fashion and Textiles (SFT) was honoured to be invited by the HKSAR Government to design a collection of “China-chic Fashion” for the Chief Executive’s wife, five female bureau secretaries and the director of the Chief Executive’s Office. The outfits were worn by them during their attendance at the National Day flag-raising ceremony and reception held by the HKSAR Government, as well as at other National Day celebratory activities. Led by Dr Jin LAM Chi-hin, Associate Professor of PolyU’s School of Fashion and Textiles, the team spent three months designing seven distinctive “China-chic Fashion” for the Chief Executive’s wife, five female bureau secretaries and the director of the Chief Executive’s Office, based on their personal styles, preferences and work nature. The designs feature the use of Chinese knot buttons, Mandarin collars, side openings and exquisite jacquard fabrics. With modern tailoring and silhouettes, the fashion outfits showcase the unique charm of traditional Chinese culture and contemporary women. Dr Jin Lam Chi-hin graduated with a bachelor’s degree from PolyU in 2007 and her project has been recognised as a highly commended Research Project of the Year by the Times Higher Education Awards Asia 2024. PolyU’s Council Chairman Dr LAM Tai-fai said, “PolyU was invited by the HKSAR Government to design ‘China-chic Fashion’ for the Chief Executive’s wife and a group of senior female government officials in celebration of National Day. This invitation is a testament to their full trust and recognition of our work. To keep pace with market and industry developments, the School’s curriculum has evolved, incorporating subjects such as artificial intelligence, digital design, e-commerce, and sustainability.
