PolyU MA Graduation Fashion Show 2022 “THEN, NOW, META”

The School of Fashion & Textiles (formerly the Institute of Textiles and Clothing) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) held its dynamic MA Graduation Fashion Show 2022 last Thursday (28 July 2022) at The Mills. More than 200 guests were in attendance, including representatives from the fashion industry and media. The theme of this year's show, “Then, Now, Meta”, is a metaphor for the collective, yet diverse journey that students have embarked on through their work. Of the 17 graduating students from the Master of Arts (MA) in Fashion and Textile Design who showcased an exploration of the past, studying and mastering the learnings of yesterday through their fashion collections. Some had reacted to our current times and questioned the reality of today. Whilst others encountered the future and contemplated the boundless opportunities of tomorrow. In addition to ingenuity in design, students put great effort into creating their own materials. For example, students produced unique fabric finishes using natural plant dying techniques, and established new approaches to embroidery and embellishment using epoxy resins. Furthermore, digital technologies such as three-dimensional design software CLO3D and Blender were widely adopted, in order to minimize the material consumed in the production process and improve the sustainability of the designs. Opening the Show was student Lin Ruo-ming, Lyn, alumni of the Zhujiang College of South China Agricultural University. Her collection was inspired by her observations of Hong Kong people drying their garments in public areas. She felt that this metaphorically reflected the “Pajama Culture” of Shanghai where pajamas, which are ordinarily used to sleep in, are worn as everyday dress. Both the role of public spaces and pajamas have been reconfigured. Her menswear collection included beautifully patterned silk shirts which directly referenced pajamas. In addition, there were some strong denim pieces, particularly a pair of shorts that looked like a fusion of two garments. Lyn wanted to create a sense of "harmonized regional confusion" with each outfit. Another highlight of the evening was a sustainable collection created by Wang Zi-yi, Sylvia alumni of Zhejiang Sci-tech University. Her collection was fully patterned using the digital software, CLO3D to reduce the amount of material used in the development of her collection. Sylvia has a strong background in textiles and developed all her own sustainable fabrics, including in particular organic silks that had been naturally dyed using plants and vegetables. Conceptually, her collection explores the relationship between architecture and nature. Each garment appeared as a robust structure, the textile surface of which looked like it had been naturally eroded by the environment. Closing the show was alumni of from Dalian Art College, Bao Yi-fan, Evan. Evan’s collection was inspired by his surroundings and how he connects with people and objects emotionally. He used a journal to document his state of mind and surroundings, and then visualize them through his design. Evan patterned his collection using CLO3D, and digitally simulated the throwing of clothes onto the floor and over a chair. His collection had a young, rebellious feeling, with its own chaotic harmony. Developing his own textiles, a particularly interesting feature of the collection was how he bleached and dyed denim and jersey pieces using a wig covered in hair bleach and blue hair dye. Mr Ryan Scott HOULTON, the programme leader, hopes that talented and ambitious young designers can fully demonstrate their creative potential through this practical one-year course. He remarked, “This programme aims to nurture future industry mavericks, who are innovative and free-thinking. We also equip them with comprehensive skillsets. I look forward to seeing our graduates shine in the field, and become a new driving force and potential disrupters in the global fashion industry.” About MA in Fashion & Textile Design PolyU’s MA in Fashion and Textile Design is one of the most innovative design programmes in the Asia-Pacific region. This taught master programme runs for one year and is committed to nurturing new and emerging fashion talents for Hong Kong and beyond. The works of the graduates highlighted their unique skills and their vision of fashion and the industry they will venture into. Close collaborations with internationally renowned brands such as Spanish footwear brand Camper and international eyewear company Bbase have been established for various projects. In the new academic year, students will start working on a sustainable eyewear collaboration with Bbase, and embark on a new and exciting project for Advance Denim.   ***END***

PolyU and CMA sign MoU to give impetus to the city’s advanced manufacturing industry and promote the brand image of “Made in Hong Kong”

To further deepen their collaboration, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and The Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong (CMA) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) today. Integrating the strengths of the academy and industry, the MoU not only aims to cultivate more innovation and technology (I&T) talents for the need of Hong Kong in the future, but also to drive the application of the results of PolyU’s research on various industries, so as to facilitate the knowledge transfer and industrialisation, make contribution to the development of I&T and advanced manufacturing of the city, and promote the brand image of “Made in Hong Kong”. CMA has been committed to offering its tremendous support to PolyU and driving education development. Back in 2014, it had donated HK$30 million to the University to support programmes that facilitate students’ all-round development. To show our appreciation, PolyU has named its CD Wing Academic Building as “CMA Building” in grateful recognition of the association’s support and contributions to the University over the years. It was mentioned in the Government’s Policy Address that the National 14th Five-Year Plan indicated clear support for Hong Kong’s development into an international I&T hub. I&T will play a decisive role in the city’s future development. To complement the development of the country, PolyU has recently established the largest interdisciplinary research platform in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area – the PolyU Academy for Interdisciplinary Research (PAIR) to further foster interdisciplinary research and advance the development of an international innovation hub. PolyU will organise seminars with CMA through PAIR on a regular basis to explore the development and opportunities of different industries and listen to their views. Leveraging on PolyU’s research results in various scientific technology areas, the two parties shall facilitate the transformation of traditional manufacturing industry, give impetus to the development of Hong Kong’s advanced manufacturing, and complement the country’s intense implementation of the strategy of “manufacturing-strong nation” with licensed patents and advanced technologies. In particular, PAIR will drive the development of advanced manufacturing industries and strategic emerging industries, such as biotechnology, new energy, new materials, high-end equipment and new energy vehicles, with the help of innovative technologies. Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, President of PolyU said, “Backed by our extensive experience in research on numerous advanced areas and the phenomenal results, PolyU has been striving to advance Hong Kong’s I&T development. CMA, on the other hand, devotes itself to enhancing the brand of “Made in Hong Kong” and driving the development of re-industrialisation. In addition, we attach great importance to the exchange and cooperation with the industrial and commercial sectors in hopes of creating values for the industries and the society with our innovation and research results. Stepping up the cooperation of the two parties is set to further drive innovation and technology in Hong Kong, promote the development of advanced manufacturing industry and strategic emerging industries, and speed up the process of developing the city into an international I&T hub.” Dr Allen SHI, President of CMA, stated that the MoU reflects that industry and academia are determined to accelerate the development of re-industrialisation and I&T. He said, “I&T is not only a key to Hong Kong's economic growth, but also a weapon for transforming and upgrading in manufacturing. Hong Kong has an excellent foundation in R&D and manufacturing; however, technology commercialisation is ineffective. CMA has great business networks while PolyU has outstanding scientific achievements. Through increased interaction between us, we are looking forward to jointly creating a more vibrant ecosystem, advancing the city’s technological development and bringing more positive impacts to various industries.” Through the regular sharing activities held by PolyU and CMA, the University’s scientific research technology and the PolyU-nurtured start-ups have been thoroughly introduced to the members of CMA. In addition to supporting technology transfer and expansion to more areas, these knowledge exchange activities have also opened up the collaboration among PolyU’s research teams and start-ups, on the one hand, and CMA and its members in other areas. Further, EightOSix Technology Company Limited, a start-up founded by Professor ZHENG Zijian of PolyU School of Fashion and Textiles, will join efforts with CMA+ Pilot Manufacturing Support Center of CMA Testing to apply the flexible Textile Lithium Battery developed by Prof. Zheng on construction work clothes so as to broaden the application of wearable electronics. Since its establishment, PolyU has been working closely with the commercial and industrial sectors in Hong Kong. In particular, we have made a stellar reputation in the manufacturing industry with our numerous contributions. By leveraging on CMA’s advantages, it strives to encourage corporates to invest in research and development in Hong Kong, advance in translation and commercialisation of PolyU’s research results, and develop manufacturing with high added value. Three PolyU Outstanding Scholars Awarded RGC Senior Research Fellow 2022/23

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has been awarded three of the ten grants under the Research Grants Council's (RGC) Senior Research Fellow Scheme (SRFS) 2022/23, another testament to PolyU scholars’ accomplishments and research excellence. The successful PolyU scholars are Prof. SUN Defeng, Chair Professor of Applied Optimization and Operations Research and Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics; Prof. LI Gang, Sir Sze-yuen Chung Endowed Professor in Renewable Energy in the Department of Electronic and Information Engineering; and Prof. CHAN Ko-ling Edward, Professor of the Department of Applied Social Sciences. Their research in the areas of applied mathematics, material sciences, and social work and public health has been awarded a total of HKD 23 million SRFS funding. The RGC’s Senior Research Fellow Scheme aims to provide sustained support to exceptionally outstanding researchers at UGC-funded universities in Hong Kong, with a view to facilitating their dedication to research and development and to helping universities attract and retain research talent. The Scheme provides ten grants to scholars from any academic disciplines in each round of the annual exercise. Nominees are assessed based on various criteria that include leadership quality and vision in the chosen area of research, the merit of the research proposal and the support provided by the university. Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU, congratulated all awardees and said, “After a rigorous assessment process, our three researchers were recognized for their research capabilities, contributions and the potential impact of their proposed research projects. We are proud of their outstanding research. This achievement also recognizes the efforts of the PolyU research teams in promoting and conducting multifaceted research.” Details of the awardees and their research projects: Prof. Sun Defeng, Chair Professor of Applied Optimization and Operations Research, and Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics Research Project: “Nonlinear Conic Programming: Theory, Algorithms and Software” Nonlinear conic programming (NLCOP) lies at the core of optimisation research which involves the design of efficient algorithms to solve mathematical problems of optimisation under constraints. This project will focus on NLCOP problems when the constraint set is C2-cone reducible. Prof. Sun’s team will design non-smooth Newton-type algorithms and augmented Lagrangian methods for solving NLCOP problems. They will also develop an efficient optimisation solver for addressing a class of virtual instances of NLCOP issues. Furthermore, researchers will investigate reinforcement machine learning techniques to solve NLCOP problems faster. The success of this project will contribute to a broad range of important applications including the sixth-generation wireless communication technology (6G), investment portfolio management, financial risk management, supply chain management, production planning and automatic driving. Prof. Li Gang, Sir Sze-yuen Chung Endowed Professor in Renewable Energy in the Department of Electronic and Information Engineering Research Project: “Printable Organic Solar Cells: Materials and Device Investigations towards Applications” Organic solar cell (OSC) is an emerging photovoltaic (PV) technology with distinct advantages in many areas, such as flexible/portable PV, building integrated PV and transparent power applications. Aiming at accelerating the OSC technology, this project proposed systematic materials and device structure investigation of new photoactive materials, stable transport materials, innovative ternary OSC active layer engineering, a novel approach for transparent OSC and printing technology. The project will significantly push forward OSC technology in terms of high efficiency, operation stability, compatibility with unique applications and being printing friendly. The proposed research represents a new frontier for OSC technology, which integrates chemistry, physics and material science to generate new perspectives in science and come up with solutions to challenging issues in renewable energy. Prof. Chan Ko-ling Edward, Professor of Department of Applied Social Sciences Research Project: “Family Polyvictimization and Social Policy Responses in East Asian Societies” Prof. Edward Chan is the first to examine family poly-victimization (FPV), which refers to the co-occurrence of at least three types of family violence, including intimate partner violence, child abuse and elder abuse. He has developed innovative methodologies and digital assessment tools to measure FPV accurately. This project will be conducted in five East Asian cities, namely Hong Kong, Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Taipei. With cross-culture data from East Asian families, this project will examine the effects of traditional East Asian cultural practices and develop clinical protocols and policies in response to FPV. Findings will shed light on the application of early detection mechanisms for FPV by adopting a family-oriented approach and using the family as the basic unit of service. It will also facilitate the development of integrated prevention and multi-disciplinary collaboration in East Asian contexts. The improvements in social policy and service delivery approach aim to bring very significant social impact and benefits to families victimised by FPV and to East Asian cities as a whole.   ***END***

Hong Kong Sustaintech Foundation provides a donation to PolyU to establish Endowed Professorship in Accounting and Finance

Sustainable development is a topic of great importance to society today. Over the years, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has focused on interdisciplinary research in order to provide innovative solutions to societal challenges. Founded by several eco-conscious and tech-savvy corporations, Hong Kong Sustaintech Foundation (the Foundation) recognises the opportunities for promoting sustainable development within the discipline of Accounting and Finance. The Foundation has therefore made a generous donation to establish an Endowed Professorship in Accounting and Finance in order to support PolyU’s ongoing contributions in the area of sustainable development. Prof. LU Haitian, Professor of the School of Accounting and Finance, has been appointed as the Endowed Professor. To express its sincere gratitude for the Foundation’s generous support, PolyU held an appreciation lunch on 13 July, hosted by PolyU President, Prof. Jin-Guang TENG who expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the Foundation for its trust and support. He remarked that the establishment of the Professorship was a great example of the collaborative efforts made by the University and industry, and that PolyU would further leverage its interdisciplinary research strengths for the advancement of sustainable finance. With the aim of encouraging ground-breaking research related to sustainable technologies and corporate strategies on environment, social and governance (ESG) criteria, the Foundation acknowledges PolyU’s research contributions in sustainable development. Mr Adrian WANG, Chairman of the Foundation, said, “The Foundation is honoured to establish an Endowed Professorship and will work with PolyU to create a win-win situation for industry and the environment.” Prof. Lu’s scholarly achievements span law, finance, accounting and other disciplines. He was one of the founding members of the Center for Economic Sustainability and Entrepreneurial Finance of the Faculty of Business at PolyU, which has become an international knowledge hub for cutting-edge research in green finance and Fintech. “The Endowed Professorship will advance my pursuit of innovative financial solutions for our society’s most salient sustainability challenges, especially in the ESG field,” said Prof. Lu. PolyU shines in ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2022 - 13 subjects rank in global top 50, 11 subjects rank No.1 in Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has attained encouraging results in the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2022 compiled by ShanghaiRanking, with 13 subjects ranked in the global top 50, up from eight last year. PolyU continued to rank No.1 globally in hospitality & tourism management – the only Hong Kong institution that topped globally among GRAS subject rankings. Eleven PolyU subjects also ranked first in the city. They are hospitality & tourism management, civil engineering, management, transportation science & technology, nursing, instruments science & technology, mechanical engineering, remote sensing, aerospace engineering, business administration and sociology. The GRAS comprises rankings of universities in 54 subjects across natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences and social sciences. The ranking makes reference to research output, research influence, international collaboration, research quality and international academic awards to measure 5,000 universities’ performance in the relevant subjects. More than 1,800 universities across 96 countries and regions are eventually listed in the rankings. These encouraging results in the latest GRAS followed last month’s release of the Third-party University Ranking Indexes 2022, in which PolyU ranked No.10 in China. PolyU InnoTech Open Day showcases the University's contributions to I&T development via world-class education, interdisciplinary research, knowledge transfer and entrepreneurship

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) today held the PolyU InnoTech Open Day on campus to showcase the University’s latest endeavours in education, interdisciplinary research, knowledge transfer and entrepreneurship which are helping to empower the innovation and technology (I&T) development of Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and beyond. The Open Day, a signature PolyU 85th Anniversary event, was specially designed for entrepreneurs, industry partners, start-ups, researchers, young talents, secondary school students and parents. Professor Dong SUN, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry of the HKSAR Government, Ms Rebecca PUN, Commissioner for Innovation and Technology of the HKSAR Government, Mr LIU Maozhou, Inspector of the Department of Educational, Scientific and Technological Affairs of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in HKSAR, Dr LAM Tai-fai, PolyU’s Council Chairman, Dr Lawrence LI, Deputy Council Chairman, Dr Roy CHUNG, Honorary Court Chairman, and Professor Jin-Guang TENG, President, Professor Wing-Tak WONG, Deputy President and Provost, and Dr Miranda LOU, Executive Vice President, officiated at the Opening Ceremony of the event today. Another highlight of the event was the inspiring lecture given by Sir Michael HOUGHTON, Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine 2020, on the topic of “Eliminating hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection as a major public health threat” via video conferencing. Professor Dong Sun, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, said, “Over the years, PolyU has been playing a long-supporting and pioneering role in driving the I&T development in Hong Kong. With the government’s solid commitment to the I&T development, coupling with our strong capabilities in scientific research and academic excellence of our universities, Hong Kong’s I&T ecosystem is flourishing and increasingly vibrant.” Professor Jin-Guang Teng, President of PolyU, said, “The development of a vibrant innovation & technology industry is key to the future success of Hong Kong, and has received very strong support from both the central government and the Hong Kong SAR government. I am sure the new term of government will put in more resources for accelerating I&T development in Hong Kong. PolyU aims to play a significant role in this area, and today’s event exemplifies our efforts.” The Opening Ceremony also marked the inauguration of the PolyU Academy for Interdisciplinary Research (PAIR). PAIR is the largest research platform of its kind in Hong Kong and the GBA to foster interdisciplinary research, partnership with world-renowned scholars, and the transfer of technologies to stakeholders. PAIR aspires to be a world leader in providing interdisciplinary solutions for major societal challenges, and its research focuses on frontier areas such as artificial intelligence, carbon neutrality, deep space exploration, smart cities, smart energy, and many more. Professor Christopher Chao, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU, said, “There are a number of societal challenges facing us every day, from poverty to hunger, and from climate change issues to how to build a sustainable city. Interdisciplinary research solutions can be used to tackle many of these world challenges. We hope to make an impact on Hong Kong, the GBA and the world.” The six winners of the newly launched PolyU Young Innovative Researcher Award (YIRA) 2022 and 10 winning teams of the President’s Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Knowledge Transfer (KT) were also presented with the awards at the ceremony. In addition to the Opening Ceremony, a series of activities were held throughout the day, providing visitors with an excellent opportunity to learn more about PolyU’s contributions to I&T, as well as to explore academic, entrepreneurial and collaboration opportunities. The start-up pitching and PolyU unicorn sharing sessions not only highlighted the impressive achievements and innovations of start-ups nurtured by the University but also allowed young future entrepreneurs to broaden their exposure and expedite ideation. The Research & Innovation breakout sessions featured novel and frontier topics related to life sciences, smart cities, neurohealth, future society, energy technology for carbon-neutrality, healthy food and lifestyle management, future manufacturing, artificial intelligence of things and intelligent wearable systems. These sessions served as a platform for industry practitioners and PolyU expert researchers to exchange views on technology innovation and development, collaboration, industry trends and applications. For secondary school students who are curious about the learning experience at PolyU, there were student consultation booths, info seminars about academic programmes, campus life sharing sessions and themed tours to various campus facilities and labs. There were also showcases of PolyU's newly established CURI Residential College and STARS Residential College – the former supports undergraduate students in conducting scientific research under the guidance of University professors; and the latter provides talented students in sports, art, social services, leadership and STEM with a vibrant living and learning environment to foster holistic development. To add more excitement to the event, visitors were greeted by two special guests, the artificially intelligent robots Sophia and Grace, created and programmed by Hanson Robotics, a Hong Kong-based humanoid robotics company. Sophia is also the first robot in the world to be granted citizenship and the first robot Innovation Ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme. Thanks to The Hong Kong Jockey Club, there was an exclusive contemporary art showcase of 400 mini Drago Cavallo (dragon horses), a contemporary expression of Chinese culture and a symbol of inspiration designed by renowned artist Simon Ma, to spread positivity on campus during the Open Day.   ***END***

PolyU and HKIAA sign MoU to cultivate young talents and conduct research for the aviation industry

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and The Hong Kong International Aviation Academy (HKIAA) signed a two-year memorandum of understanding (MoU) with an aim of contributing to the local aviation industry by cultivating talents and conducting aviation-related research projects with joint efforts. Leveraging on HKIAA’s extensive experience in talent nurturing, together with PolyU’s competence in scientific research, the parties will work closely to develop training programmes for the aviation industry, as well as optimise the execution of such programmes and the collaboration in promotion. In addition, one of the highlights of the MoU is to jointly conduct aviation-related research projects. The pair is committed to exchanging professional knowledge and experience of training and research and sharing such resources as training facilities and flight simulators, so as to maximise the synergy to cultivate talents for the industry. Witnessed by Prof. Wing Tak WONG, Deputy President and Provost of PolyU, and Mr CK NG, CEO of HKIA Services Holdings Ltd., the MoU was signed by Ir Prof. H.C. MAN, Dean of Faculty of Engineering, PolyU, and Ir Simon LI, President of HKIAA, at the signing ceremony held on PolyU campus. The Dean of Faculty of Engineering at PolyU, Ir Professor H.C. Man said, “This is a timely collaboration between PolyU and HKIAA for professional human resources development in order to support the rapid and imminent growth of our aviation industry in Hong Kong. We will work on various professional training programmes as well as research and development projects to groom our young generation in Hong Kong to be the key stakeholders in this pillar industry.” Ir Simon Li, President of HKIAA said, “We can foresee that the completion of the third runway system at Hong Kong International Airport in 2024 will create more opportunities. There is a greater need than ever for talented individuals to join the aviation industry. We look forward to working together with PolyU to attract, develop and nurture young talent to support the sustainable growth of the aviation industry in Hong Kong and throughout the region.” In spite of the challenges faced by the global aviation industry due to the pandemic, it is believed that the new opportunities ahead for the development of the industry are substantial. PolyU confers University Fellowships on eight distinguished personalities

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) conferred the title of University Fellow on eight outstanding individuals in recognition of their significant contributions to the University and community. Presided over by Dr Lam Tai-fai, Chairman of the University Council, the conferment ceremony was held at the Jockey Club Auditorium on the PolyU campus. The recipients were warmly greeted by PolyU’s President, Professor Jin-Guang Teng, and other senior staff members of the University. Dr Lam delivered a speech at the conferment ceremony, where he remarked, “The eight distinguished individuals who have been awarded a University Fellowship are outstanding members of the community and excellent leaders in various professions, business sectors and industries. I strongly believe that our new Fellows will empower us to take our development to the next level, helping us excel even further.” Professor Teng welcomed the new Fellows to the PolyU family. “By joining forces with our new Fellows, who are exemplars of social responsibility, and with the continuous efforts and initiatives of the PolyU community, I am confident that the University will scale new heights in its pursuit of world-class education and research for the benefit of society,” said Professor Teng. PolyU further contributes to the development of China's aerospace technology by collaborating with the Academy of Aerospace Propulsion Technology in establishing the “Joint Research Centre of Advanced Aerospace Propulsion Technology”

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the Academy of Aerospace Propulsion Technology (AAPT) have signed an agreement to establish the “Joint Research Centre of Advanced Aerospace Propulsion Technology”. Led by the Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering (AAE) of PolyU, the collaboration aims to establish a highly competitive scientific research force and technical cooperation team in the field of advanced aerospace propulsion technology through a long-term and in-depth strategic partnership. It is expected to further contribute to the development of China's aerospace technology. Advanced aerospace propulsion technology is a future-oriented field with broad application prospects. PolyU and AAPT have formed an ongoing complementary partnership to establish the “Joint Research Centre of Advanced Aerospace Propulsion Technology”. The five-year cooperation plan involves a number of joint research and development projects. Adhering to the global future development direction of aerospace propulsion technology, the projects will focus on the research and development of key technologies, and enhance the engineering research and production capabilities in the field. The signing ceremony for the cooperation agreement was held on 4 July 2022. The document of cooperation was signed by Professor Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU and Mr LI Bin, Associate Dean of AAPT, and was witnessed by Professor Jin-Guang TENG, President of PolyU and Mr WANG Wanjun, Dean of AAPT. PolyU’s President, Professor Jin-Guang Teng said, “AAPT is the R&D centre of liquid propellant rocket engines in China. PolyU and China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) have been working closely together to support the Nation's space exploration and research. This new collaboration will further support the development and modernisation of the Nation’s civil aerospace industry, manned spaceflight and space exploration. PolyU is honoured to continue its ongoing contribution to the development of the Nation’s aerospace science and technology.” Mr Wang Wanjun, Dean of AAPT said, “PolyU AAE has a world-leading research foundation, as well as design experience in aerospace and aeronautical propulsion technology. With PolyU’s comprehensive professional facilities and intelligence resources, the Joint Research Centre for Advanced Aerospace Propulsion Technology can become an influential platform for knowledge exchange. It will be of great benefit to the promotion of research and technological development in the field.” In addition to several joint research projects, this collaboration is also committed to cultivating a group of high-level interdisciplinary experts for future applications. “This collaboration will facilitate academic exchanges and resources sharing, and support scholars in conducting various academic seminars more efficiently, while also nurturing high-tech talents such as research doctoral students and visiting scholars. The joint research team will additionally be involved in a wide range of joint research programmes to foster major projects.” said Professor Chao, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU. Mr Li, Associate Dean of AAPT said, “The Joint Research Centre will push the cooperation between PolyU and CASC to a new height. It has a rich history and solid background in engaging in academic research, and industrial collaborations related to aeronautical and aerospace engineering. AAE is well known for its researches in advanced technologies including supersonic combustion ramjet, liquid-propellant rocket engine and propellant combustion globally. Academy of Aerospace Propulsion Technology (AAPT) Established in 1965, the Academy of Aerospace Propulsion Technology (AAPT) is one of China’s core aerospace science and technology research units, owned by China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC). It has 11 units, which are all equipped with advanced facilities for innovation and research, production, and testing. PolyU launches the largest interdisciplinary research platform in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area to advance the development of an international innovation hub

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has established the PolyU Academy for Interdisciplinary Research (PAIR) – the largest research platform of its kind in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area to foster interdisciplinary research, partnership with world-renowned scholars, and the transfer of technologies to stakeholders. PAIR focuses on research in frontier areas such as artificial intelligence, carbon neutrality, deep space exploration, smart cities, smart energy, and many more. The Academy will make impactful contributions to the development of Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area into an international innovation and technology hub. Comprising 16 research institutes and centres with over 400 highly qualified PolyU senior researchers from all over the world, the interdisciplinary research platform is the largest among its peers in the Greater Bay Area. It pools top brains with a wealth of investigative and professional experience to conduct PAIR’s cutting-edge interdisciplinary research programmes. The Academy aspires to offer solutions to unprecedented societal challenges arising from climate change, food safety, an ageing population, disease, energy shortages, etc. It will also aim to promote sustainable development and growth. The PAIR research institutes and centres will furthermore address the opportunities brought about by the emerging technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution that will change how people work and live, such as artificial intelligence, data science, the Internet of Things, and robotics. PAIR’s innovative research projects are supported by PolyU’s world-class laboratories and state-of-the-art facilities, including the State Key Laboratories and the Chinese National Engineering Research Centres (Hong Kong Branches). Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, President of PolyU, said the University is committed to developing innovations across disciplines and cultivating impactful solutions to the global challenges of today. He said, “PAIR will also promote and facilitate the establishment of close partnerships with industries and the community, ensuring the real-world significance and impact of its research. Furthermore, the Academy will play an important role in developing and supporting research collaboration activities with counterparts in the Mainland and around the world. PolyU will leverage its leading research and innovation capability and capitalise on the Greater Bay Area’s manufacturing strength to build the region into an international innovation and technology hub.” Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU, said the expansion of interdisciplinary research over the past decade has brought about a fundamental change in the basic concepts and practices of a scientific discipline. He added, “New disciplines may also emerge from the extensive research currently being performed by scientists in this interdisciplinary environment. Their research may have a wide-ranging positive impact, expanding knowledge and improving the quality of life.” The Academy is headed by Prof. Qingyan CHEN, Director of PAIR, Global STEM Professor, and Chair Professor of Building Thermal Science in the Department of Building Environment and Energy Engineering of PolyU. He is Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University, United States, after a distinguished stint of two decades at the prestigious university. He also serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Building and Environment journal since 2008. Prof. Chen said, “Interdisciplinary research can be one of the most productive and inspiring of human pursuits to produce solutions to the profound issues that society is facing. PAIR researchers are expanding knowledge and solving challenging problems through basic and applied interdisciplinary research, integrating disciplines not only from science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, but also from business, design, social science, humanities, and management.” The official inauguration of PAIR will be held on 16 July 2022 at the Jockey Club Auditorium on campus and is one of the key events at the PolyU InnoTech Open Day.   ***END***
