PolyU launches flagship I&T, investment and industry matching event series to deepen regional collaboration across GBA, Yangtze River Delta, Jing-Jin-Ji and Central China hubs
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has been actively aligning with national development strategies. Leveraging its multidisciplinary research strengths, the University addresses the evolving economic and industrial needs of Chinese Mainland provinces and municipalities, supporting the Nation in accelerating the realisation of self-reliance on high‑standard technology. Today, PolyU hosted the launch ceremony of the flagship PolyU Innovation Investment Roadshow Series (PIIRS) in Qianhai, Shenzhen. The event heralded the establishment of an integrated ecosystem platform for innovation and technology (I&T), investment and industry matching. The platform is designed to accelerate collaborative I&T development across four key regional innovation hubs: the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), the Yangtze River Delta, the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (Jing-Jin-Ji) region and Central China.
Featuring the inaugural PIIRS roadshow alongside the award presentation ceremony of the PolyU x KAUST International Future Challenge (Saudi Arabia Track), the event convened over 300 distinguished guests, including government officials, academic leaders, entrepreneurs and venture capital representatives. It underscored PolyU’s dynamic innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem while highlighting the University’s track record in advancing deep integration across government, industry, academia, research and investment sectors.
To support national I&T development strategy and provide cross-border development and application scenarios for research and startup projects, PolyU has established an extensive and robust translational research network across the Chinese Mainland. This network comprises 12 PolyU Mainland Translational Research Institutes across different cities, the PolyU-Qianhai Disruptive Technology and Innovation Research Centre (QHRC) and two Shenzhen-based research institutes. Capitalising on these network resources, PIIRS roadshows will take place on a rotational basis across the four target national innovation hubs of GBA, the Yangtze River Delta, the Jing-Jin-Ji region and Central China. Combining project pitches, technology showcases and matchmaking sessions, the platform conducts targeted pairing aligned with specific regional industrial demands. By prioritising high-value innovations with strong commercialisation potential, PIIRS connects PolyU researchers and startup teams directly with strategic investors and industrial partners, accelerating technology transfer, empowering local industrial upgrades and driving socioeconomic development, contributing to national I&T development.
Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, President of PolyU, remarked that PolyU’s research shall focus on pressing social needs and industrial challenges, consistently delivering world-leading, implementable and valuable research outcomes. He also noted that the commercialisation of research outcomes hinges on capital empowerment, validation in industrial scenarios and support from market resources. It is therefore critical to establish collaborative channels linking startup teams, investment institutions, leading enterprises and government resources. He hopes to join hands with all stakeholders to build a win-win innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem, thereby contributing to national technological advancement and the high-quality development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
Supported by QHRC, the inaugural PIIRS roadshow featured pitching sessions and an interactive exhibition showcasing over 40 innovative projects led by PolyU academics, researchers, alumni and students. Featured technologies span the six high-growth domains of advanced manufacturing and innovative materials, aerospace and aviation technology, artificial intelligence and digital economy, culture and creativity, life sciences and healthcare, and smart city and sustainable development.
A standout team at the roadshow was Z-TRAK SPACE, a startup founded by ZHANG Zihan, an undergraduate of the University’s Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering, alongside a team of PolyU students and seasoned aerospace industry specialists. To tackle key industry bottlenecks, such as high launch costs, rigid scheduling and a lack of customised services for small and medium-sized satellites, the team developed Fission, the world’s first reusable launch vehicle engineered specifically for small and medium payloads. The startup has raised nearly RMB 100 million in cumulative funding and signed launch contracts for 37 satellites, illustrating PolyU’s ability to successfully connect deep-tech startups with venture capital and industry pipelines.
The event featured a fireside chat moderated by Prof. Christopher CHAO, PolyU Senior Vice President (Research and Innovation), themed Uniting & Empowering: Fundraising Synergies and Breakthrough Pathways for Translating Frontier Technology. PolyU academics joined prominent venture capitalists from Shenzhen Angel FOF, China Prosperity Capital and Shenzhen Leaguer Co., Ltd. in exploring strategies for commercialising deep-tech outcomes and sustaining a vibrant entrepreneurship ecosystem.
Additionally, Ms CHEN Rui, PolyU alumna and Founder cum Chief Executive Officer of BOTINKIT, a global supplier of digital kitchen solutions, delivered the presentation Food Physics AI Ushering in a New Industry Paradigm: Defining Your Track in Uncharted Territory, sharing actionable insights on scaling technology enterprises and market expansion.
Elaborating on the institutional support available to enterprise founders, Prof. Zijian ZHENG, PolyU Vice President (Knowledge Transfer), highlighted the comprehensive resources provided by the PolyVentures ecosystem. He emphasised that the University continuously strengthens its strategic blueprint for research and knowledge transfer. PolyU strives to advance market-demand-driven innovative research, expand its research translation network in the Chinese Mainland, and actively establish innovation and entrepreneurship hubs in Hong Kong, the Chinese Mainland and overseas. These initiatives empower PolyU startups to pursue cross-border and global expansion, cultivate cross-regional collaboration and elevate the University’s global impact.
The event also marked the conclusion of the “PolyU x KAUST International Future Challenge” (Saudi Arabia Track), co-organised with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). Over 20 deep-tech startup teams competed, with four top ventures awarded the Diamond Cup, Gold Award, Silver Award and Bronze Award respectively. As the first overseas track of the PolyU International Future Challenge, this collaboration signifies a major milestone in PolyU’s strategic alliance with KAUST and opens a new chapter in I&T collaboration between Hong Kong and Saudi Arabia.
