The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) recently won a Bronze Award in the Public Services Sector of the 2015 Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence (HKAEE), in recognition of the University’s outstanding accomplishments in green campus management. PolyU was honoured to receive this award for two consecutive years. This year saw a record high participation from 1,146 organizations, including 4 sectors for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and 11 sectors for non-SMEs such as manufacturing and industrial services, public services, schools, and servicing and trading etc.
While actively promoting a green culture on campus, PolyU has been executing sustainability policies across campus developments and daily operations. The University’s staff and students have made remarkable achievements in energy and water conservation, improving the environment and community engagement. PolyU has also been working closely with suppliers and canteens in promoting green diets and reducing food waste.
In the area of sustainable campus development, the University has incorporated green building elements into major alteration works on campus. All new capital developments are required to attain the gold standard in “BEAM Plus” assessment scheme recognised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council and Indoor Air Quality requirements. In addition, campus greenery contributes to creating a harmonious environment that connects to nature.
Apart from undertaking sustainability-related research and knowledge transfer projects, PolyU has been integrating sustainability concepts in its curriculum. Students have also been promoting sustainable development and environmental protection to the community through Service-Learning programmes.
To create a culture of sustainability, PolyU has been organizing many activities, such as the annual Campus Sustainability Weeks, seminars, workshops, competitions, hostel events etc. to encourage green ways of living. The University has also provided waste recycling facilities to facilitate recycling habits, organized “Food Waste Reduction” and “Bring Your Own” campaigns to foster green practices among staff and students, and allocated hydroponic and organic farming sites to develop urban farming activities.
