ISE student won the Champion Award in the IET Young Professionals Exhibition & Competition 2016
Mr. Siu Pui Hin, a student of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE), participated in the IET Champion of Young Professionals Exhibition & Competition 2016 Undergraduate Section and became the Champion at the YPEC 2016 event day on 3rd July 2016, after competing with 31 undergraduate project teams from all over the world.
The competition organized by The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) aims to act as a dynamic platform for young professionals from different industrial segments to exhibit their engineering and technology innovation ability in project presentations and booth displays.
Mr Siu, a fresh graduate of the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Industrial and Systems Engineering in the PolyU, won the competition with a project entitled "Towards an Effective In-Person Delivery System with an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle", which was supervised by Dr. Velvet Chen. Moreover, laboratory officer Mr. Sam Lam also provided technical support to this project.
The project proposes a new methodology for increasing the UAV localization accuracy and develops an UAV-based delivery system that can perform direct to-the-person delivery. In particular, algorithms have been designed to fuse the GPS signals with an on-board Bluetooth signal for UAV control and navigation. Moreover, other possibilities have been explored for achieving dynamic QR code reading and recognition with a flying UAV.
