Guidelines for Management of a Student Honours Project

1. The Role of the Supervisor

The Honours project is the work of the student. The task of the supervisor is therefore to assist the student to achieve the best possible standards of work. In particular it is expected that:

1.1 the supervisor has research experience and/ or interests which are appropriate for the student's topic;
1.2 the supervisor has sufficient time, and access to adequate resources, in order to be able to provide suitable guidance throughout the whole course of the student's work;
1.3 the supervisor is familiar with the assessment criteria, and will regularly draw the attention of the student to them;
1.4 the supervisor will meet regularly with the student to
1.4.1 monitor the progress of the work analytically and constructively,
1.4.2 provide critical reaction to drafts of the project report before it is submitted for marking; and
1.5 the supervisor will mark the student's project report using the assessment criteria indicated in the subject.

2. The Role of the Student

The student is expected to be an independent and autonomous learner who is able to take responsibility for the production of a substantial and relatively extended project. In particular, the student is responsible for:

2.1 the conceptualization of the work with the supervisor;
2.2 the development of a feasible approach to the project;
2.3 the management of time and resources;
2.4 the maintenance of regular contact with the supervisor to report on progress and to reflect on the supervisor's suggestions and critical reactions; and
2.5 the preparation of a project report which conforms to all relevant guidelines stipulated in the Programme Requirement Document and the Guidelines for the Presentation of Academic Papers and Citation of References.
