About the speaker
Dr Sam Birks is a medical educator at the University of Sheffield's Medical School and an emergency doctor. Sam’s clinical career spans 9 years and alongside clinical work, he holds a permanent teaching position at the medical school focusing on anatomy teaching, digital learning and artificial intelligence (AI) . He is particularly interested in improving undergraduate medical learning in small-group settings and exploring how technology-enhanced learning (TEL) can create more engaging and effective educational experiences for students.
In this webinar, we'll explore an innovative application of the flipped learning model, moving beyond inverting the lecture to "flipping the assessment”. This approach empowers students to take ownership of their learning by generating their own exam and practice questions. We'll show how this was put into practice as part of a research project with medical students using a large language model to create high-quality, authentic questions.
The core of the learning came from the critical "double-checking" phase, where students verified the accuracy of the AI-generated content. This critical thinking and verification process became the true learning opportunity. After this process, questions were shared, creating a collaborative environment for peer learning. Key takeaways from the project will be shared in the webinar, including the specific prompts we used and what we learned about harnessing AI as a powerful tool for flipped learning.
