Active learning has been shown, across many studies, to improve student outcomes. In this workshop, we will share our experiences with active learning in a range of university courses, from small seminars to courses with several hundred students, and provide concrete examples of a variety of active-learning exercises. We will discuss how to introduce active learning on a small scale, how to expand it, and how to take it all the way to designing a fully “flipped” or “inverted” course. We will address practical issues such as doing active learning in ill-suited lecture halls or online, getting student buy-in, deciding which activities to grade, and using TAs to assist in the classroom. We will also consider the challenge of designing out-of-class activities that prepare students and create time for active learning in class. Participants will have a chance to participate in several active learning exercises to get a feel for the student experience.
