Speaker: Prof. Bela Stantic, Director of Big Data and Smart Analytics Lab - IIIS, Griffith University, Australia; Visiting Prof., SHTM
Facilitator: Dr Catherine Cheung, Associate Dean & Associate Prof., SHTM
Date: 13 Oct 2023
Time: 2:30 PM - 3:30 PM
Venue: Z205

In this talk, Professor Bela Stantic will first elaborate on the power of Artificial Intelligence when applied to Big Data through diverse funded projects at the Big Data and Smart Analytics lab - IIIS, Griffith University. Many of these projects rely on pre-trained-transformers, large language models, and Generative AI. Therefore, a brief introduction on what they are and how they work will be provided appropriate for non-technical audiences. Specific attention will be given to clarifying what Generative AI can offer beyond the chat features, such as Chat-GPT, and what that means from the know-how and computing power point of view. The presentation will continue by demonstrating several pre-trained and fine-tuned large language models as well as GenAI running locally on the Griffith Big Data clusters. Specific attention will be given to how Generative AI can enhance teaching and how virtual tutors can be developed by fine-tuning the large language models with the course content and actual past interactions between teachers and students. Finally, Prof. Stantic will introduce DORIS, a purposely built GenAI system to help researchers with diverse tasks including reviewing scientific papers.

The activity is jointly organised by the CoP on Education for Sustainable Development and EDC.
