Prof. Zhongqing Su is Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). He is the current Editor-in-Chief of journal Ultrasonics, and holds Changjiang Chair Professorship. He earned his Ph.D. in 2004 from School of Aerospace, Mechanical & Mechatronic Engineering at The University of Sydney, with a full scholarship from the Australian government. Prior to this, he obtained his MS and BEng from School of Aeronautical Science & Engineering at Beijing University of Aeronautics & Astronautics. All his degrees are in Aeronautical Engineering. He received highly competitive “Australian Research Council – Australian Postdoctoral Fellowship” (ARC-APF) upon completion of his PhD study, with which he advanced his research at The University of Sydney in 2005-2006. He joined PolyU in 2007 as an Assistant Professor, was promoted to Associate Professor in 2011, became Full Professor in 2016, and was appointed Head of Department in 2021. His research interests lie primarily in the broad area of ultrasonics, structural health monitoring (SHM), wave propagation, sensors, non-destructive evaluation, smart materials and advanced composites.
Apart from his key editorial commitment as the Editor-in-Chief of Ultrasonics, Prof. Su is/was Associate Editor of nine key international journals in his field, including Journal of Sound and Vibration, Structural Health Monitoring: An International Journal, Structural Engineering and Mechanics, and ASME Journal of NDE. He has been a Panel Member of Hong Kong Innovation & Technology Fund (ITF) since 2021.
Prof. Su has published extensively. He is the author/co-author of 2 research monographs, 6 book chapters, 8 edited books/international conference proceedings, and 310+ archived papers including ~190 papers in top-tier journals. His work has been cited widely, leading to ~8400 citations (Google Scholar) and an H-index of 46 (as of June 2021). He has secured sizable research grants from governmental agencies.
In parallel with his longstanding dedication to fundamental exploration, Prof. Su has also committed himself to translational research. He holds 3 patents including 2 US Patents, and the Gold Medal of Geneva Invention (2018). In recent years, he has secured ~HKD 10 million in research support from industry, including Airbus, Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), AeroEngine Academy of China, China Academy of Space Technology (CAST), High-speed Railways, etc. In these real-world application paradigms, Prof. Su and his group have demonstrated successful knowledge transfer.
Prof. Su was the Chair of the 7th Asia-Pacific Workshop on SHM, which was held successfully in Hong Kong in 2018. Since 2019, he has been the Co-chair of SPIE Conference on Health Monitoring of Structural & Biological Systems, and the Co-Chair of SPIE Conference on Sensors & Smart Structures Technologies for Civil, Mechanical, & Aerospace Systems. Prof. Su is an elected board member of International Congress on Ultrasonics (ICU), the Steering Committee of European Workshop on SHM (EWSHM), and the Scientific Committee of Asia-Pacific Workshop on SHM (APWSHM). He is/was sitting on scientific/executive/organising/steering committees of ~50 international conferences, including SPIE Conference Series on Smart Structures/NDE, ASME Conference Series on NDE/Diagnosis/Prognosis, International Symposium Series on NDT in Aerospace, and International Conference Series on SHM & Integrity Management. He was Secretary to Hong Kong Society of Theoretical & Applied Mechanics in 2016-2018, and Secretary to Australian Composite Structures Society (Sydney Chapter) in 2004-2007. Prof. Su has been invited to deliver ~25 plenary and keynote talks at key international conferences in his field, along with another ~100 invited talks and seminars at international conferences, universities, and industry, including 2 talks under the “Monash University Distinguished Scholar Talk Scheme”. Dr. Su is a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, and holds adjunct professorship in renowned universities including Chair Professorship in Northwestern Polytechnical University and Chongqing University.
Prof. Su is particularly proud of the achievements of his students and research fellows. His group has nurtured a Fulbright-RGC Scholar, an Endeavour Australia-Cheung Kong Scholar, 2 Hong Kong PhD Fellows, a Humboldt Research Fellow Scholar, 2 Hong Kong Scholars, and 10 Full/Associate/Assistant Professors in Hong Kong, mainland China and Poland.
In recognition of his achievements and scientific contribution to SHM society, Prof. Su received “SHM – Person of the Year Award” in 2012, “Dragon-Star Innovation Award (1st Place)” in 2015 from European Commission, and twice “Natural Science Award for Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output” in 2015 and in 2020, from Ministry of Education China. In PolyU, he was a recipient of the “President’s Award for Excellent Performance/Achievement in Research & Scholarly Activities (Individual)” in 2011, “Faculty Award for Outstanding Performance in Research (Individual)” in 2011, “Faculty of Engineering Research Grant Achievement Award” in 2014 and 2017, and “Faculty Merit Award in Teaching” in 2010.
