Department and Staff News

Prof. Cheng Li, Chair Professor of Mechanical Engineering, officially assumed the presidency of the International Institute of Noise Control Engineering (I-INCE) on January 1, 2026, marking a new chapter for the global leading organization in noise control, acoustics, and vibration engineering. As the 9th president in I-INCE’s 52-year history, Prof. Cheng will serve a three-year term, bringing decades of pioneering research experience and international leadership to steer the institute’s global initiatives.

Founded in 1974, I-INCE traces its roots to the first International Conference on Noise Control Engineering (INTER-Noise) held in Washington, D.C., USA, in 1972 – a landmark event that coincided with the U.S. Noise Control Act of 1972, a pivotal piece of legislation for global noise regulation. Established as a worldwide consortium of professional societies, I-INCE has grown from its early beginnings to encompass 54 member societies representing over 40 countries, along with institutional and sustaining members, making it the only global organization with comprehensive coverage of noise control technology issues.

Throughout its history, I-INCE has been synonymous with driving international collaboration through its flagship INTER-Noise conference series, which has been hosted in cities across the globe. As I-INCE president, Prof. Cheng will oversee the planning of flagship events such as INTER-NOISE congresses. He will play a critical role in identifying emerging global noise control issues and mobilizing the institute’s resources to develop innovative solutions.

Prof. Cheng’s appointment builds on his distinguished career and long-standing engagement with I-INCE. Currently a Chair Professor in Mechanical Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Director of its Consortium for Sound and Vibration Control, he is a globally recognized leader in vibration and acoustics. His research findings have been adopted by leading engineering institutions worldwide. Prior to his presidency, Prof. Cheng served as I-INCE Vice President for Asia-Pacific and a member of its board of directors, gaining invaluable insight into the institute’s operations and global priorities. He is also a Fellow of numerous prestigious academic bodies, including the International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration, the Acoustical Society of America, and the Chinese Society of Acoustics, as well as an Academician of the Royal Society of Canada (Academy of Science) and Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering.

In a statement following his inauguration, Prof. Cheng emphasized his commitment to strengthening global cooperation in noise control engineering. “I-INCE has a proud legacy of uniting professionals to create a quieter world,” he said. “In the face of evolving urbanization and industrialization, our mission has never been more critical. I aim to enhance collaboration between regions, particularly bridging gaps in technical capacity, and drive innovation in sustainable noise control solutions that benefit communities worldwide.”
