Smart Traffic Fund Awarded Research
Bus Automatic Emergency Braking System Designed for Hong Kong Road and Traffic Conditions
Name of PC: Prof. Tony Sze, Associate Professor of CEE
Approved Funding: HK$7,045,189.65
The project aims to study and design an Automatic Emergency Braking System (AEBS) for buses applicable for Hong Kong road and traffic conditions. This project will analyse traffic accident records and real-time bus trajectory data collected during shadow tests to evaluate AEBS performance across Hong Kong’s diverse road and traffic scenarios, and examines its effectiveness in reducing collisions while ensuring passenger safety during braking activation. During the shadow tests, the AEBS system only monitors and records bus driving data without intervening in actual vehicle control. The research deliverables will include an AEBS performance evaluation model, system parameter optimisation scheme and implementation plan, providing empirical evidence for bus operators to formulate AEBS deployment plans in Hong Kong, thereby enhancing overall bus safety.
The Smart Traffic Fund provides financial support to local organisations and enterprises to carry out innovative research, with the aims of enhancing commuting convenience, improving the efficiency of road networks and road spaces, and strengthening driving safety.
