In a momentous achievement, Dr. Zhou Liping, Research Assistant Professor at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, has been honored with a Gold Medal for the groundbreaking project "Eye-on-a-Chip Device" at the 50th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva.
The innovative "Eye-on-a-Chip Device" technology, led by Dr. Zhou Liping and Dr. Phan Chau-Minh, mimics the complex eye environment. This cutting-edge device facilitates the testing of various products such as contact lens materials, multipurpose solutions, and pharmaceuticals. By utilizing microfluidics to replicate tear flow, this technology enables real-time imaging and incorporates a patented automatic image analysis algorithm. Not only does this advance streamline research processes, but it also saves valuable time and resources for researchers and pharmaceutical companies while ensuring the generation of reliable data.
This innovative system offers a more comprehensive, clinically relevant, cost-and time-efficient, and highly reproducible alternative to animal testing for preclinical drug development, toxicity screening, and disease modeling. This device received the Gold Medal Award at the 2024 Asia Exhibition of Innovations and Inventions in Hong Kong, as well as the CAI Award from the China Association of Inventions in 2024.
Heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Zhou Liping and her dedicated team for their remarkable achievement. This Gold Medal win is a testament to their collective expertise, hard work, and pioneering spirit in advancing the frontiers of research and technology. Their collaborative efforts exemplify the University's ethos of excellence and innovation.
