Project Title
Biomechanics-Guided Mechanisms and Interventions for Myopia

Synopsis

Myopia is characterized by excessive axial elongation and progressive remodeling of ocular tissues, particularly the sclera and posterior segment. Increasing evidence suggests that biomechanical alterations are not only consequences of myopia progression but may also actively contribute to disease development by modifying tissue deformation, extracellular matrix remodeling, and the mechanical environment of the eye. This project aims to investigate the biomechanical mechanisms underlying myopia progression and, more importantly, to translate these mechanisms into targeted interventions. By integrating advanced ophthalmic imaging, biomechanical measurements, computational modeling, and clinical data, the study will characterize changes in ocular geometry, tissue stiffness, stress distribution, and remodeling during myopia development. Based on these findings, the project will identify modifiable biomechanical targets and evaluate intervention strategies designed to alter the mechanical environment of the eye, regulate scleral remodeling, and potentially limit pathological axial elongation. The study will also explore individualized biomechanical biomarkers to guide treatment selection and monitor therapeutic response. Expected outcomes include a deeper mechanistic understanding of myopia progression, identification of clinically actionable biomechanical targets, and development of biomechanics-guided intervention strategies, ultimately contributing to precision prevention and treatment of myopia.
