Project Title
Understanding the Drivers of Optical Defocus Processing: Paving the Way for Improved Myopia Control

 

Synopsis

Myopia is a growing global public health concern, with its prevalence projected to affect approximately half of the world’s population by 2050 (Holden et al., 2016). High myopia is highly associated with the increased risk of sight-threatening ocular complications. Although optical interventions like myopia-control spectacle lenses can slow myopic progression, their treatment efficacy varies substantially between individuals. This variation creates clinical uncertainty, making it challenging to maximize the therapeutic effect for each individual.

Modern optical interventions primarily modify retinal defocus signals to influence eye growth. However, individual responses to these signals may depend on peripheral refractive profiles, visual adaptation, and real-world viewing conditions. Particularly, the spatial structure and depth profiles of daily visual environments can potentially modify how the visual system processes lens-induced defocus over time. Understanding the processing of optical defocus and its interaction with the environment will optimize future optical designs and pave the way for more individualized myopia control.
