Dr Shanica Hon and Dr Andrew Lam’s article ranked 10th of the Century’s most influential scientific publication

Congratulations to Dr Shanica Hon, PhD/BSc alumnus & currently Optometrist of the School of Optometry (SO) and Dr Andrew Lam, Associate Professor & Associate Head of SO, who received the honourable mention for their distinguished publication titled “Corneal Deformation Measurement Using Scheimpflug Noncontact Tonometry” in the latest issue of editorial on Optometry and Vision Science published by the American Academy of Optometry.  Published in 2013, Dr Hon and her supervisor, Dr Lam’s work ranked 25th most cited articles out of 12,000 papers published in Optometry and Vision Science between 1923 and 2023. Most significantly, their article is ranked 10th after considering the temporal factor as a high-influence publication in a century, using the estimated scientific impact metric (Relative Citation Ratio).  Their publication, the first paper studying the repeatability and reproducibility of a newly launched clinical device called the Corvis ST, had also been awarded “The Garland W. Clay Award 2016” presented by the American Academy of Optometry, honouring as the most widely cited in world research literature in the preceding five years with the votes of the OVS Editorial Board.

Third Run of MOOC about Visual Function and Eye Health on edX

A Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) developed by PolyU School of Optometry about vision science, the first of its kind on the edX platform, is having the third run from 1 Jan 2023. Develop your understanding of vision and discover how visual functions relate to your daily life. Learn and apply techniques to help you take better care of your eyes. The course consists of 6 modules including structures and functions of the eye, the resolution of the eye, depth perception, colour vision, common eye conditions and how to protect your eyes. PhD Student Zhang Jing received Best Student Presenter Award

Congratulations to Ms Zhang Jing, PhD student of the School, who received the Best Student Presenter Award for outstanding performance in Research Seminars in Semester 1, AY2022/23 for her presentation titled “The role of CD33 in microglia-mediated neuroinflammation and retinitis pigmentosa”. The School organized the Research Seminar Series twice per academic year to encourage academic exchange among peers and provide research students with presentation opportunities showcasing their research output.

The 20th Hong Kong International Optometric Symposium

In collaboration with the Hong Kong Optometric Association (HKOA) and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), the Symposium recorded a total attendance of 2223 from Hong Kong and other regions worldwide.  Under the theme “Global Trends In Optometry: Paediatric Optometry and Primary Care Practice”, the 20th HKIOS was organised in a hybrid format to facilitate an onsite and online experience for attendees, allowing for remote and face-to-face opportunities to take part in the Symposium.   Mr Fan Hung-ling, Chairman of the Hospital Authority, was the Guest of Honour who delivered the opening remarks at the Opening Ceremony. Prof. Kee Chea-su, Head of School, delivered the welcoming remarks. Dr Lydia Yu, Clinical Associate at the School, moderated the morning session.  Six experts from Australia, Hong Kong, the UK and the USA shared six sub-topics under the theme. PolyU Undergraduate Info Day 2022

The PolyU Undergraduate Info Day 2022 was successfully held on 8 October on campus. The School organized various activities, including info seminars, guided tours to The Optometry Clinic & pre-clinical lab, admission consultations and programme exhibition, attracting over 2,700 visitors to participate in these optometry programme related activities. Info Day provides an excellent platform for secondary school students, parents and the public to obtain first-hand information about our undergraduate programmes, admission requirements and career prospects, as well as receive consultations from our academic staff. Applications for Admission to Bachelor of Science (Honours) Scheme in Optometry (2023/24)

The School is now inviting applications for admission to our Bachelor of Science (Honours) Scheme in Optometry programme in September 2023. Details of application period are as follows: Application Period JUPAS Applicants 6 Oct 2022 – 7 Dec 2022 International Applicants Start Date: 22 September 2022 Early Round Deadline: 15 November 2022 Normal Round Deadline: 7 February 2023 *Applications received after the Normal Consideration Round deadline will still be considered on a rolling basis till 31 May 2023, subject to the availability of study places. Local Non-JUPAS Applicants 22 Sep 2022 – 7 Feb 2023 JEE Applicants Details will be announced on early Nov 2022.
